Yun Jia and her two friends all thought Jiang Yan and his group were bad luck—not even worth looking at.

But they had arrived in two cars—one belonging to Du Yu’s family and one that Jiang Yan had borrowed. After considering their options, Yun Jia asked the guesthouse owner to help arrange a car for them to return to the city. Du Yu, who liked Yun Jia, maintained his thick-skinned persistence in her presence. When a man likes someone, his face isn’t just thick as a wall—it’s bulletproof. He shamelessly stuck to her side, wearing down her resistance until he finally convinced her to take his car keys, allowing the three young women to drive back to the city themselves.

Du Yu would ride in Jiang Yan’s car.

If Yun Jia truly had no interest in Du Yu, given her personality, she definitely wouldn’t have come to this guesthouse in the first place. But she was still angry, and only after repeated persuasion from Luo Wen and Gao Jingjing did she accept the car keys. After the college entrance exam, Yun Jia had gotten her driver’s license and often drove her family’s car around, so her driving skills were completely solid.

Du Yu dejectedly climbed into Jiang Yan’s car.

On the way there, everyone had been chatting and laughing happily, but on the return journey, the car seemed filled with the somber atmosphere of a funeral procession.

Jiang Yan was still driving, with Du Yu sitting in the passenger seat watching him.

In their dormitory, only Wang Jianfeng didn’t have a driver’s license. Lu Yicheng had found time to get his during freshman year, but hadn’t had a chance to drive since.

So Wang Jianfeng, Lu Yicheng, and Lu Siyan sat in the back seat.

Du Yu asked Jiang Yan irritably, “What do you plan to do next?”

Everyone knew that Jiang Ruoqiao had broken up with Jiang Yan, and her attitude was extremely firm.

Jiang Yan stared at the road ahead, gripping the steering wheel tightly. His expression was somewhat dejected, but beneath the dejection was a look of determination. “I’ll ask for her forgiveness. If she doesn’t forgive me, I’ll pursue her again.”

Du Yu: “…”

He really couldn’t bring himself to offer words of encouragement or comfort.

This situation was just too much. Yesterday when Jiang Yan had come to apologize to him, Du Yu had learned what happened from Jiang Yan himself.

He had been particularly shocked: Jiang Ruoqiao hadn’t stabbed Jiang Yan to death?

If that was the case, her temper must be incredibly good.

What girlfriend wouldn’t want to beat her boyfriend half to death after catching him kissing another girl?

Although Jiang Yan had remorsefully said he had mistaken Lin Kexing for Jiang Ruoqiao.

But still—

Not recognizing your own girlfriend? That was just asking for death.

To ease the tension, Du Yu turned his head to look at Wang Jianfeng, who was studying metaphysics, and said jokingly, “Hey, Old Wang, since you haven’t finished your training yet, why not practice on us? Read the fortune for Boss Jiang here and see if he and Jiang Ruoqiao have any chance of reconciliation.”

Wang Jianfeng: “…Didn’t you say this was feudal superstition?”

Du Yu laughed heartily, “As they say, science ends where mysticism begins. We’ve got nothing better to do, so come on, give it a shot.”

Jiang Yan didn’t refuse.

In the past, he wouldn’t have believed in such things either, but now he was too anxious and desperate. Not only did he not reject the idea, he even said, “A reading would be fine.”

Wang Jianfeng: “…”

He wanted to stretch, but found the back seat too narrow.

Glancing at Lu Yicheng, who was resting with his eyes closed, he sighed, “In our dorm of four, only Boss Lu is still a die-hard materialist now.”

His tone was quite proud, as if he had dragged Du Yu and Jiang Yan down with him.

Only Lu Yicheng still stood firmly on the shore, refusing to “sink with them.”

Lu Yicheng didn’t even open his eyes.

Lu Siyan obediently leaned against him. The boy now found Jiang Yan’s voice irritating—this man had hurt his mother.

And now he was asking someone to divine whether he had a chance of getting back together with her?

He wanted to say directly: Not! Possible!!

As long as he was around, it would never happen!

Wang Jianfeng casually said, “Tell me your birth year, month, day, and approximate time, as well as hers. You know hers, right?”

Jiang Yan thought for a moment. “I know approximately.”

He reported both their birth dates and times.

Wang Jianfeng started working on his phone.

Du Yu mockingly said, “There’s even software for this stuff now? Doesn’t that kind of kill the mystique?”

“Of course it counts,” Wang Jianfeng replied with an affectionate tone. “With your intelligence, you wouldn’t understand something this profound.”

As Wang Jianfeng spoke, he suddenly stopped and frowned.

He shook his head. “Let’s try this—give me one character from her name, and I’ll try a different method.”

Du Yu burst into laughter. “What school of fortune-telling are you from anyway?”

Wang Jianfeng: “Shut up.”

Jiang Yan replied: “Qiao.”

Lu Yicheng opened his eyes and patted Lu Siyan’s hand, signaling him to stop fidgeting as if he had pins on his bottom.

Wang Jianfeng calculated again. He remained silent, his brow deeply furrowed.

Now Du Yu stopped joking too, while Jiang Yan asked, “Is the result bad?”

Wang Jianfeng said, “It’s feudal superstition, don’t take it seriously. I’m just having fun and exploring unknown territory.”

Du Yu: “?”

It seemed the result wasn’t just bad—it was terrible, or Wang Jianfeng wouldn’t be talking like this.

Jiang Yan: “…”

Fine, no need to say more.

Lu Siyan, wise beyond his years and never one to miss drama, pestered Wang Jianfeng beside him, “Uncle, tell us! What’s the result? I really want to know!”

Jiang Yan: “?”

Lu Yicheng: “…”

Wang Jianfeng liked children, and at this moment he didn’t care if he was rubbing salt in Jiang Yan’s wounds. He said with a smile, “There’s no result.”

A double entendre—no result, or no future. Take it how you will.

After driving for about two or three hours, they finally reached the city.

Knowing Jiang Yan was eager to pursue his girlfriend, Du Yu and Wang Jianfeng got off at a subway station. It wasn’t convenient for Lu Yicheng with the child, so Jiang Yan insisted on driving them home. When Lu Yicheng and Lu Siyan got out at their building, Jiang Yan got out too.

As Lu Yicheng and Lu Siyan were walking toward the residential building, Jiang Yan stopped Lu Yicheng and said, “Boss Lu, thanks for yesterday.”

Lu Yicheng nodded with a complicated expression.

In fact, he had already realized earlier that his friendship with Jiang Yan was over.

This guesthouse retreat further confirmed it beyond argument, as Lu Yicheng found he could no longer maintain his previous normal attitude toward Jiang Yan. In those rare moments when Jiang Yan showed affection for Jiang Ruoqiao, it stirred something in Lu Yicheng… something he couldn’t quite understand.

What emotion was it?

Lu Yicheng couldn’t explain it clearly. When Jiang Yan had muttered “if it were you, you would have done the same,” the feeling reached its peak. He had suppressed ninety percent of his emotions to say as calmly as possible, “I am different from you.”

—If I were with her, I would never do such a thing.

As this thought entered his mind, Lu Yicheng’s steps suddenly halted.

Seeing his father like this, Lu Siyan looked at him with a strange expression. “Dad, what’s wrong?”

How strange—his face looked awful, as if he’d lost money.

Lu Yicheng shook his head. Even in the sweltering heat, his face remained solemn and calm. He carried his backpack, his hand clenched tightly enough to show veins.

This was nothing.

Lu Yicheng analyzed his feelings. He had never had a relationship with any woman, and suddenly there was a child in his life. Being told that in the future, his wife would be Jiang Ruoqiao—even if he were a saint, he couldn’t help but pay attention to her.

After dropping off Lu Yicheng and Lu Siyan, Jiang Yan pressed the accelerator and drove out of the complex toward Jiang Ruoqiao’s apartment.

Originally, his plan was simple. He didn’t know her apartment number or which floor she lived on, but he knew which building. Not wanting to cause her unnecessary distress, he only planned to wait downstairs—he would eventually see her. Then he would sincerely apologize, explain, and make promises to her.

But what Jiang Yan didn’t anticipate was that Jiang Ruoqiao could guess his intentions.

She was determined to make a clean, thorough break, never wanting to have anything to do with Jiang Yan again. She didn’t want to give him any illusion that she could be won back, so she had to be decisive. Early that morning, besides her interview, she had packed her luggage, and after returning from the company, she told the landlady she was taking her luggage to a hotel.

She had no desire to enact some idol drama scene outside her apartment building.

After checking into the hotel, she sent the address and room number to her dormitory group chat.

She felt sorry for her three roommates—everyone had gone out to have fun, only to encounter this situation. She didn’t care whether Jiang Yan and Lin Kexing were sorry, but she genuinely felt a bit embarrassed, so she planned to treat her three roommates to hot pot, drinks, and a manicure.

Sure enough, the three responded immediately.

Having lived together for two years, they understood each other well. Seeing that Jiang Ruoqiao had moved from her apartment to a hotel, everyone understood her meaning. Yun Jia was the first to state in the group: 「Rest assured, I won’t lag behind in dealing with trash. No matter how Du Yu tries to get information from me, even if they put me on a tiger bench with chili water, I won’t reveal a single word.」

Luo Wen: 「Wow, could you be more of a suck-up?」

Gao Jingjing: 「Hahahaha!」

Jiang Ruoqiao also laughed.

In the afternoon, the three secretly arrived at the hotel.

Yun Jia surveyed the hotel room environment.

Curiously, she examined the takeout Jiang Ruoqiao had ordered, and like Detective Conan, said mysteriously, “Something’s off. Jiang Ruoqiao, when did you suddenly become so frugal?”

Jiang Ruoqiao: “?”

She was not frugal!!

Gao Jingjing also nodded thoughtfully, “First, you’re actually staying at this chain budget hotel.”

Jiang Ruoqiao: “…”

“Second, your takeout,” Yun Jia added. “Didn’t you always order those super expensive health foods before? Now tell me, what did you order? A chicken cutlet combo rice. Look, how much is it on the receipt? Twenty yuan!”

Jiang Ruoqiao hadn’t expected her roommates to be such detectives!

But she absolutely couldn’t admit it, so she continued to insist, “What misconception do you have about me? I’m not some lavish spender—I’m a simple, ordinary person.”

How did they make it sound like she needed mountains of gold and silver to sustain herself?

No, that wasn’t right.

She couldn’t help questioning herself: Had she really become more frugal?

Had she “fallen” without realizing it?

Yun Jia put her hands on her hips and continued to check the bathroom, casually saying, “If I didn’t know what kind of person you are, I’d suspect you were secretly keeping a man!”

Jiang Ruoqiao: “…”
