Suddenly Became a Boy – What Should I Do? - Chapter 75.2
Feeling apologetic, Cheng Shiyin’s mother asked Cheng Shiyin to set an extra place at the table, inviting Lin Xin to dinner. This time, Lin Xin returned to his usual seat, though the seating arrangement had changed subtly. Sitting directly across from him wasn’t Cheng Shiyin but her mother. Meanwhile, Cheng Shiyin was sent to the head of the table, signaling that her mom intended to engage Lin Xin as an equal rather than in an interview-style interrogation.
The rectangular table—humorously dubbed the ‘square table conference’—was now in session.
“Here, try this,” Cheng Shiyin’s mother said, offering Lin Xin a bite of green pepper, her least favorite food, all the while maintaining a perfect, polite smile. Lin Xin obediently took the bite and even praised it sincerely, “Hmm, this is delicious!” Cheng Shiyin’s mother sighed quietly, her disappointment hidden beneath her flawless facade.
Lin Xin remained blissfully unaware, genuinely enjoying the green pepper.
Watching her mother’s unchanged smile, Cheng Shiyin shuddered. The last time she saw this smile was when her mom discovered her dad’s hidden stash of cash—125 yuan and 70 cents under a vendor’s stall. The silent treatment between her parents lasted an entire month after that.
This time, the smile was even more exaggerated and unrelenting. All Cheng Shiyin could do was silently pray that Lin Xin would survive her mom’s scrutinizing gaze. Meanwhile, she tried to analyze her mother’s every move, hoping to detect and defuse any incoming traps for Lin Xin.
Cheng Shiyin’s mother abruptly raised her index finger, as if recalling something important. Both Lin Xin and Cheng Shiyin sat up straighter, waiting for her to speak. But she simply smiled again, took a bite of her rice, and said nothing. A moment later, she repeated the gesture, tapping her temple with her finger as if recalling something important. Instead, she popped a piece of tomato egg stir-fry into her mouth.
After several rounds of these false alarms, Lin Xin and Cheng Shiyin gave up, focusing solely on their meal. Following dinner, Lin Xin even helped Cheng Shiyin clean the dishes before finally bringing up his departure.
However, Cheng Shiyin’s mother, seated on the living room sofa, seemed preoccupied. She let Lin Xin and Cheng Shiyin linger in the kitchen, chatting and laughing for over an hour, without uttering a single “this is inappropriate.”
By the time Lin Xin was ready to leave, Cheng Shiyin’s mother remained frowning, lost in thought. She looked as if she had something to say but just couldn’t recall it, exuding an aura of unresolved discomfort.
Watching her expression, Lin Xin thought grimly to himself, “I’ll be spending all night reflecting on what I did wrong today. This is going to be one sleepless night.”
But just as Lin Xin reached the door and stepped out, Cheng Shiyin’s mother suddenly sprang to life. She rummaged through her bag and hurried after him.
Lin Xin had barely taken a few steps when Cheng Shiyin’s mother stopped him. Cheng Shiyin, assuming her mom was about to hand over some random polar bear souvenir, simply poked her head out of the doorway to observe.
Something felt off. Despite her mom’s serene smile, Cheng Shiyin’s heart raced, as if warning her of impending disaster.
“Auntie? Is there something else?” Lin Xin asked, pausing in confusion.
Cheng Shiyin’s mother handed him a slip of paper. “Catch,” she said.
Lin Xin obediently took it, but before he could even glance at it, Cheng Shiyin’s mother dropped her bombshell. “Here’s five million. Leave my daughter.” Without giving Lin Xin a chance to respond, she turned sharply and strode back inside, slamming the door shut behind her. It sounded like an impenetrable barrier between Lin Xin and Cheng Shiyin’s love.
Lin Xin stood frozen, his eyes fixed on the slip of paper in his hand—a check for five million yuan. His mind spun in disbelief, struggling to process what had just happened.
“Wait… could Cheng Shiyin actually be a secret billionaire CEO?”
