Suddenly Became a Boy – What Should I Do? - Chapter 68.1
Naturally, Lin Xin’s mother mostly learned about the subject from manga, though not everything in them was fictional.
Intersex (IS), also known as hermaphroditism or intersexuality, refers to individuals whose anatomical characteristics do not conform to typical definitions of male or female. These traits can manifest in various ways, including differences in chromosomes, hormones, internal or external reproductive organs, and secondary sexual characteristics. Some intersex traits are identifiable at birth, while others only become apparent later in life as the body develops.
That last part struck a deep chord with Lin Xin’s mother. “As the body develops, traits may gradually become apparent.” On the surface, this description closely matched the physical changes she had observed in Lin Xin.
As her theory took shape, she finally addressed the question that had been nagging at her since Lin Xin arrived.
“Excuse me, young lady…” She adjusted her sunglasses carefully, making sure they wouldn’t slip and expose her eyes to the blinding radiance emanating from Cheng Shiyin.
Before she could finish her sentence, Cheng Shiyin enthusiastically grabbed her hand and greeted her warmly. “Hello, Auntie!” she said sweetly. “I’m Cheng Shiyin, but you can just call me Xiao Cheng.”
Cheng Shiyin didn’t specify her relationship with Lin Xin, which only heightened his mother’s curiosity. She had seen Lin Xin’s dormmates when dropping her off at school and knew for certain that Cheng Shiyin wasn’t one of them. Under these circumstances, someone staying this close to Lin Xin had to be special. Her suspicions deepened as she observed how Lin Xin’s every action seemed to confirm that Cheng Shiyin was his girlfriend.
“Could this girl be Lin Xin’s girlfriend?” she wondered. “The way Lin Xin is peeling oranges and handing over water so eagerly… it’s exactly how his father courted me back then.”
She took another look at Cheng Shiyin’s stunning face and hesitated, unsure of what to think. “How could a girl this beautiful possibly fall for Lin Xin?” The thought of her being a girlfriend quickly shifted to a different conclusion. She must be a good friend. That must be it. “Thank you for bringing Lin Xin home.”
This time, Cheng Shiyin didn’t respond.
Instead, she lightly poked Lin Xin’s cheek. Lin Xin, who had been focused on shelling sunflower seeds, caught the playful gleam in Cheng Shiyin’s eyes and immediately dropped the seeds. Wrapping an arm around her, he proudly declared, “Mom, this is my girlfriend. Gorgeous, right?” His face radiated smug satisfaction.
Lin Xin’s mother frowned. The grin on his face froze as his expression stiffened in confusion. “Why does she look dissatisfied? How could she not be happy with such a beautiful daughter-in-law? Does she secretly want a son-in-law instead? But I don’t have that kind of skill…”
In truth, Lin Xin’s mother was thrilled. “Even if Lin Xin were still a girl, I’d be ecstatic that my child has found a partner. I’d throw a three-day banquet just to celebrate someone finally being willing to date Lin Xin.”
But the current image before her was jarring. “This is my child. My child, who now has his father’s face, hugging another woman and looking at me like that. How am I supposed to react?”
“Go wash your face!” Lin Xin’s mother barked.
When Lin Xin returned, sporting his usual healthy tan and a clean-shaven chin, his mother finally understood. “Ah, so that’s what Cheng Shiyin sees in him. My Lin Xin isn’t bad-looking at all.”
She nodded to herself. “Life really is full of surprises.”
Although Lin Xin had only taken a quick trip to the sink, by the time he returned, his previously disapproving mother was enthusiastically stuffing red envelopes into Cheng Shiyin’s hands, seemingly determined to lock down her daughter-in-law on the spot.
Lin Xin leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, chuckling as he watched the lively interaction between his mother and his girlfriend. “Is it too soon to call this mother-in-law bonding?” he mused.
Two days later, Lin Xin reappeared in public as if nothing had happened, as though he had simply taken a short vacation. Reporters swarmed him, three layers deep, but Lin Xin walked on unfazed. His composure even outmatched that of the school administrators, who had deliberately avoided the spotlight during this time.
When a microphone accidentally jabbed toward his mouth amidst the jostling crowd, Lin Xin calmly quipped, “My porcelain veneers are expensive,” before politely handing the microphone back to the flustered journalist.
“Elegance. Simply excessive elegance,” he thought.
Lin Xin didn’t actually have porcelain veneers; the comment was just made on the spot.
