As expected, Lin Xin could only reply, “It just suddenly happened.” But then he hesitantly asked, “Mom, about those things…”

“Nothing!” Lin Xin’s mother cut in, brushing off his question as her voice wavered. Despite the sunglasses obscuring her face, her family-inherited lack of poker face betrayed her true thoughts.

Seeing his mother’s reaction, Lin Xin’s suspicions only grew stronger. He pressed on, asking tentatively, “Could it be… Dad is actually…”

“What?” Lin Xin’s mother didn’t catch his lowered voice.

“He… might be… um… that…” Lin Xin stammered, unable to articulate his thoughts. Seeing his mother’s frown deepen, he suddenly blurted out at full volume, “Could it be that Dad is a woman?!”

“What kind of nonsense is that?” The mother Lin Xin had always envisioned as gentle and poised suddenly let loose with a startling exclamation. Cheng Shiyin, seated quietly nearby, suddenly felt utterly out of place. She wished she could reduce her existence to that of a paramecium, invisible and unnoticed.

Luckily, Lin Xin and his mother quickly escalated into a full-blown argument, sparing Cheng Shiyin from further scrutiny as she choked on her tea, coughing and trying desperately to stay silent.

Lin Xin patted Cheng Shiyin’s back while continuing his onslaught of questions at his mother. “If it’s not hereditary, then how come you’re into gender-bending books? Was this some kind of foresight? Or… are you actually Dad?”

“And what were you muttering about earlier at the door—about seeing, doing, and saying things? Mom, can you give me a reasonable explanation for all this?” Lin Xin pressed.

Lin Xin’s mother, surprisingly calm now, knew that in the past, such a situation would have been enough to send her to the ICU. But thanks to her newfound expertise in gender transformation narratives, she felt unperturbed. Not only could she handle Lin Xin’s sudden switch from daughter to son, but she also had a clear plan for the necessary steps to keep it discreet.

As for Lin Xin’s barrage of questions, Lin Xin’s mother refused to answer. The truth was embarrassing—while reading manga, she had once idly muttered, “Well, in these stories, a gender transformation always leads to true love. Maybe if Lin Xin experienced that, I wouldn’t have to bother finding her a blind date.” Who would’ve thought that the heavens had heard her offhand wish and granted it? She wasn’t even a devout Buddhist, so how did her casual musings turn into reality?

Rather than dwell on these unnecessary details, Lin Xin’s mother chose to skip ahead to the practical issues. “Transfer schools. Let’s move to another city. I’ll take care of your household registration and ID gender problems,” she declared.

This was, after all, the simplest solution. They wouldn’t have to explain Lin Xin’s transformation to everyone or deal with the judgment and rejection that might follow. However…

Lin Xin awkwardly pulled out his phone and said, “Mom, that’s no longer an option.”

Taking the phone, Lin Xin’s mother glanced between the screen and Lin Xin’s face. Amused and exasperated, she realized, “This monumental event had already gone viral—everyone but her already knew.”

Well, this certainly complicated things. Still, there was one particular explanation that could clarify why a boy might be living in a girls’ dormitory…

Author’s Note

The flow of time in the land of pigeons (procrastination) seems slower than in the human world (oops).

I realized I’ve read quite a few gender-bending comics. There was one Korean series where the female lead worried endlessly about the male lead recognizing her as the boy he’d known as a child (for 50-60 chapters). Yet when the male lead found out, he didn’t care at all—it felt like he didn’t even register the fact. What’s the point of the gender-bending theme if it doesn’t matter?!
