Suddenly Became a Boy – What Should I Do? - Chapter 62.2
As the line inched forward, Lin Xin still hadn’t spotted any signals from a supposed contact. No one met his eyes or made any suspicious gestures. He felt like a rookie smuggler carrying contraband, his guilt written all over his face.
While scanning the area for clues, Lin Xin finally noticed something odd. There were two examination rooms, but only one line.
Whenever someone tried to approach the second medical examination room, a petite nurse would dart out, shooing everyone away. Eventually, she stationed herself firmly at the door, telling each student, “The doctor has stepped out. Please queue up at the other room.”
But when it was Lin Xin’s turn, the door swung open. The nurse grabbed him by the arm, pulled him inside, and shut the door quickly behind him. She turned to the remaining students and snapped, “That’s it! This room is full. Line up at the other one!”
Inside, Lin Xin found himself facing a towering, bald doctor with a deep scar running across his scalp. The sight was intimidating enough that Lin Xin thought, “If I were a girl and accidentally came in here, I’d run out in a heartbeat.” The plan was flawlessly executed.
Lin Xin handed over his forged medical report and sat quietly. When he finally exited the room, his steps were light, as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
By 6:30 p.m., all the students had completed their medical exams, leaving behind only the doctors organizing the reports and a few students tidying up.
Ying Lun, tasked with cleaning the floors, was about to leave after throwing out the trash when a doctor called him back to help. Stretching his back, the doctor muttered, “Strange. We had extra help this year, but we’re still finishing at the same time as last year.”
The comment unsettled Ying Lun, though he couldn’t immediately understand why. He shrugged it off and continued sorting the reports by student ID.
As he worked, the names flashed by—He Xiangtong, Zhang Yun, Shang Xiaoxia… Lin Xin.
The moment Ying Lun saw Lin Xin’s name, his heart skipped a beat. A vivid memory came flooding back—of Gu Nian at the KTV, utterly broken.
“Gu Nian,” Ying Lun whispered that night as he approached his friend curled up in a corner. He gently patted Gu Nian’s shoulder, but there was no response. The sound of quiet, choked sobs filled the air.
“Gu Nian? Are you okay?” Ying Lun tried again.
This time, Gu Nian turned and, in the next instant, collapsed into Ying Lun’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. In all the years Ying Lun had known him, he had never seen Gu Nian so devastated.
It took half an hour for Gu Nian’s sobs to subside. Only then did Ying Lun dare to ask, “What happened?”
Gu Nian opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. His lips moved silently, struggling to form an answer. Ying Lun thought, “Was he trying to say Lin Xin?”
Ying Lun couldn’t shake the feeling that the unspoken words were “Lin Xin.” His thoughts returned to the medical report he’d just seen. Flipping it open, he noticed the details. “Female, 180 cm…”
He thought, “180?” The number stuck in his mind, echoing alongside the doctor’s earlier remark. Could it all tie back to what happened at the KTV?
Returning to the dormitory, Ying Lun found Gu Nian lying on his bed, a textbook in his hands, though he had clearly fallen asleep. Ying Lun walked over and nudged him gently. “Wake up. Dinner’s here.”
“Thanks,” Gu Nian mumbled groggily, taking the food. He sat up, absentmindedly stirring his noodles with an oversized spoon, reducing them to a mush before slowly eating.
Watching Gu Nian’s cautious, subdued demeanor, Ying Lun felt a pang of sadness. This wasn’t the confident, vibrant Gu Nian he had grown up admiring. His friend, someone he had always looked up to, now seemed utterly defeated.
One name burned in Ying Lun’s mind. He thought, “Lin Xin. Lin Xin!”
Furious, Ying Lun clenched his teeth and began researching Lin Xin’s class schedule.
Author’s Note
Some readers have mentioned that recent chapters are too short. Upon reviewing them, I realized the issue lies in insufficient detail and plot development. I’ve expanded this chapter slightly and will ensure future chapters are over 2,500 words to avoid this problem. I plan to revisit earlier chapters when time permits, though my current workload and 996 schedule have made pre-publishing revisions difficult. Thank you for your understanding! (Though, as for update frequency… coughs awkwardly.)
Edison Saves His Mom counts as four characters, right?
