The two girls fell silent. Meanwhile, Lin Xin, now prompted about his girlfriend, couldn’t seem to stop himself from talking. He launched into an animated recounting of his relationship with Cheng Shiyin—how they met, grew closer, and eventually became a couple.

“You know, I didn’t realize it at first, but it turns out it was love at first sight. And guess what? She felt the same way about me. Isn’t that destiny?” Lin Xin asked, his voice brimming with excitement.

“Yes, yes, it is,” Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong replied half-heartedly, clearly unenthused by Lin Xin’s romantic ramblings.

“I thought performing Swan Lake would be embarrassing, but I ended up finding love. Wahaha!” Lin Xin laughed so hard his facial features scrunched up like a wrinkled napkin, leaving Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong to wonder if their earlier impression of him being handsome was just an optical illusion.

“And during the maid café event, wasn’t she stunning? Don’t you agree?” Lin Xin continued enthusiastically.

“Yes, yes, yes,” the two chimed in mechanically, though their triple affirmation carried the unmistakable undertone of a hard “no.”

“And the haunted house? Wu Lian’s villa? Incredible, especially with the fireworks!” Lin Xin added, his face glowing with nostalgia.

“Wait a minute,” Zhang Yun thought.

Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong froze mid-step. They exchanged wide-eyed looks of disbelief. The keywords Lin Xin had casually dropped felt disturbingly familiar. A nagging suspicion crept over them as they pieced together the scenes he described. It was as if the moments he reminisced about featured fleeting glimpses of… themselves.

“The school festival, the haunted house, the maid café, the food-eating contest, the fireworks,” Zhang Yun thought.

“That’s Lin Xin,” He Xiangtong realized.

“You’re Lin Xin?” the two girls shrieked in unison, only to immediately slap their hands over each other’s mouths to prevent Lin Xin from hearing them.

They turned to scrutinize him more closely. Nearly six feet tall, with well-defined biceps, sturdy calves, and a face that could grace a magazine cover. The only thing slightly out of place was his long hair, though it somehow added to his artsy aura. From the beginning, they had unconsciously labeled him as an art student.

“But how could this guy possibly be Lin Xin?” Zhang Yun wondered.

Their gazes met, and in each other’s eyes, they saw the same ridiculous conclusion. “We’ve either traveled to a parallel universe or landed in an alternate timeline,” they thought.

To process this revelation, they even created a private group chat. They intentionally excluded Lin Xin. But their attempts at discretion were short-lived when Shang Xiaoxia screenshotted the entire conversation and forwarded it straight to Lin Xin.

“We’re exposed,” they realized.

“You should just cut your hair and come clean already,” Shang Xiaoxia suggested bluntly. “Right now, you look like a member of Power Station.”

Although Cheng Shiyin didn’t fully agree with Shang Xiaoxia’s analogy, she found herself intrigued by the idea of Lin Xin with short hair and subtly encouraged him to go along with it.

Left with no choice, Lin Xin sighed and reluctantly opted for a fresh, clean-cut hairstyle.

The transformation was undeniable. With his short hair, he looked every bit the part of a young man.

What Lin Xin didn’t expect, however, was that no one seemed to notice or care about his dramatic change. Outside of class, he hadn’t been particularly close to his classmates, so no one realized that one familiar face had disappeared while another unfamiliar one had taken its place. To them, it was as if nothing had happened.

Even Lin Xin’s two roommates dismissed the transformation entirely. Still convinced by their parallel universe theory, they simply accepted this “version” of Lin Xin as the default for their world.

Everything remained peaceful until the mandatory swimming class and its accompanying physical examination arrived in the second semester.
