Cheng Shiyin set the cup aside and beckoned Lin Xin with her finger. Lin Xin leaned down toward her, closing the distance between them until their faces were just inches apart. His movements carried a blend of playful curiosity and warmth.

Cheng Shiyin smiled warmly at the now-towering Lin Xin, pulling him into the playful narrative they’d just started. She said, “Hello. I know this might seem a bit forward, but can I know your name?” Her words carried the charm of a first meeting. However, her gesture of wiping the sweat from his forehead spoke volumes of their deep familiarity.

Hearing her question, Lin Xin instinctively let the spare sugar-water cup in his hands fall to the ground, freeing them to act. Without hesitation, he scooped Cheng Shiyin up by the waist, bringing his lips close to her ear. “Lin Xin,” he whispered, his voice leaving no room for pause before adding, “I like you. Will you go out with me?”

“Sure,” Cheng Shiyin replied with a laugh as light as a dancing lily.

“But… I don’t even know your name yet,” Lin Xin teased, recalling the storyline they had crafted together.

The script, however, was quickly forgotten. Abandoning the narrative, they immersed themselves completely in their love story. It was free from rules or conventions and sealed with kisses that lingered throughout the winter break.

Lin Xin’s dormitory group chat, which had been eerily silent for the entire holiday, suddenly sprang to life with its first message. “Is anyone in the dorm? Could someone help bring in some luggage at the school gate?”

“I’m here—on my way,” Lin Xin replied immediately. Slipping on his shoes, he dashed out of the dorm.

Since Lin Xin’s complete transformation his surging energy left him brimming with vitality every day. His dates with Cheng Shiyin often involved long and exhausting walks to help burn off his seemingly endless stamina. If not for those dates, Lin Xin might have sought a part-time job on a construction site to carry bricks and expend his energy.

Seeing a chance to help someone move luggage—a task that perfectly aligned with his pent-up vigor—Lin Xin couldn’t have been happier. He eagerly embraced the opportunity.

However, by the time Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong arrived at the school gate, they still hadn’t spotted Lin Xin. Similarly, Lin Xin, standing at the same location, couldn’t seem to locate the two girls either.

It had been a whole winter break since Lin Xin had last seen Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong. In his memory, their heights were roughly on par with his. What Lin Xin hadn’t accounted for was the fact that he now towered over them by a full 20 centimeters. Searching for them at eye level, all he noticed were bald spots and patches of dandruff. Not a single familiar face appeared. It took him a moment to realize he needed to look down.

As soon as he did, he spotted two puzzled girls standing right in front of him.

Without a word, Lin Xin strode over and grabbed their luggage. Behind him, Zhang Yun and He Xiangtong whispered to each other, “Who’s this guy? He’s so handsome. Do you know him?”

Both shook their heads in unison, their confusion growing. Though he seemed strangely familiar, they couldn’t recall his name. Still, his face was striking enough to prevent them from mistaking him for a thief when he took their luggage.

If neither of them knew who he was, they reasoned, there was no harm in asking. Though neither wanted to admit it, both had been momentarily stunned by how good-looking the helpful stranger was. Finally, one of them spoke, her curiosity getting the better of her, “Do you… have a girlfriend?”

“I do,” Lin Xin replied instantly. His tone dripped with such sweetness that it could have overwhelmed even the most stoic of grizzly bears.

“What a shame,” Zhang Yun remarked, while He Xiangtong nodded in agreement. They resigned themselves to thinking he was just a good Samaritan helping out, no different from someone assisting an elderly lady across the street.
