Shang Xiaoxia clapped her hands over her face, her mouth open wide in an imitation of Edvard Munch’s The Scream. She completely ignored Wu Lian, instead diving headfirst into her latest treasure trove of gossip. Her imagination ran wild, conjuring chaotic reactions to Lin Xin’s secret being exposed. Unfortunately, her mental imagery was too clichéd with screams, hands over ears, frantic denials, someone storming out and a random truck accident. The scene shifted abruptly to their joint funeral.

Disappointed by her own unimaginative scenario, Shang Xiaoxia let out a long sigh. Only then did she faintly hear the sound of grinding teeth behind her. She slowly turned her head, glancing out of the corner of her eye.

What she saw was Wu Lian’s darkened face, radiating suppressed fury. His entire body seemed to simmer with rage, as though an invisible sign above him read ‘Beware of Dog. Do Not Approach.’

“Oh no,” she thought. “Wu Lian is even angrier now.”

The truth was, Shang Xiaoxia had long known that Wu Lian liked her. She admired his business acumen, envied his family background, and appreciated how he always indulged her wild antics. But these weren’t enough to make her feel that a “class-gap romance” between them could ever work. So, she avoided defining their relationship, often deliberately misinterpreting his words and steering clear of topics that might lead to a confession.

This time was no exception.

Wu Lian’s obvious jealousy presented yet another opportunity for a clear discussion. But instead of addressing it, Shang Xiaoxia quipped, ‘Your brow is dark. Clearly, a bloodbath is in your future.’

Frustrated, Wu Lian snapped his phone shut, crossed his arms, and sank into a sullen silence. Unlike his earlier exaggerated expressions and furrowed brows meant to showcase his anger, this time he resorted to a bad habit from his childhood—muttering quietly to himself as a way of venting. It was a habit he hadn’t indulged in for years.

As Shang Xiaoxia watched Wu Lian’s lips move at a familiar rhythm, long-buried memories from her childhood resurfaced. She pictured scenes of her first “relationship,” a fleeting one that began with a boy’s tearful face and ended with her foolish bullying.

Lost in thought, Shang Xiaoxia blurted, “For heaven’s sake, shut up already.’ Then, as if on reflex, she added words from her childhood, ‘If you keep babbling, I’ll sew your mouth shut.”

“How would you sew it shut?” Wu Lian finally spoke, breaking his silence. His response aligned so perfectly with the boy from her memories that Shang Xiaoxia’s mind went blank. All her plans to avoid the situation dissolved.

Without further hesitation, she grabbed Wu Lian and silenced him in the most direct way possible by kissing him. Her heart raced, and for a fleeting moment, the tension dissolved into an electric stillness, amplifying the absurdity of the situation.

Finally, everything fell silent.

“Knock, knock, knock.” The sound of the traffic officer rapping on the car window interrupted their moment.

The chauffeur, with forty years of professional experience and impeccable observational skills, immediately got out of the car. He engaged the officer in a spirited discussion, expertly buying Wu Lian and Shang Xiaoxia some extra time.

Of course, the fine was inevitable.

Looking back on this day, Wu Lian couldn’t help but shudder—not at the traffic officer’s intervention, but at the memory of Shang Xiaoxia’s childhood methods. Back then, her way of “sealing his mouth” hadn’t been with a kiss but with a rock she’d picked up from the roadside, complete with weeds still attached.

Author’s Note
It’s so much easier to write when I stray from the main plot! To explain Wu Lian and Shang Xiaoxia’s childhood story briefly, I won’t go into detail because it would just pad the word count unnecessarily.
The gist of it was, ‘This woman dared to insult me with that filthy rock. No one has ever treated me this way before. Alright, you’ve caught my attention.’ Classic domineering CEO vibes (except, typically, they’d respond with insults or a slap).
Thank you all for your continued support—I’ll keep working hard!
