- Chapter 58.1 - Resistance Only Increases Severity
“Hey, why aren’t you saying anything?”
Not only did Wu Lian stay silent, but he also turned his back on Shang Xiaoxia, leaving her staring at his broad shoulders. The two of them remained locked in this awkward, back-to-back stalemate for over an hour.
It was the same familiar stretch Lincoln limo and the same familiar chauffeur, but Wu Lian seemed to have turned into a mute. No matter how Shang Xiaoxia teased or coaxed him, he remained as unmoving and silent as a statue in a gallery.
“Ping—” Wu Lian’s phone vibrated with a new WeChat message. Since he had disabled notification previews, he had to open the app to see who the sender was and what they had sent.
Of course, it was Shang Xiaoxia—sitting less than a meter away from him. Knowing Wu Lian’s habits, she avoided pointless messages like, “Why aren’t you talking to me?” or “Hey!” Such tactics would only work once, and if Wu Lian ignored her the first time, no amount of buzzing notifications would make him open her texts again.
When Wu Lian saw the contents of Shang Xiaoxia’s message, his eyebrow twitched involuntarily, and a faint smile crept onto his lips.
The message read, “The novel you bookmarked, ‘The Green Skull,’ has updated!”
Shang Xiaoxia truly was something else.
She didn’t stop there. Line after line, Shang Xiaoxia began creating a continuation of ‘The Green Skull,’ a story she had completely fabricated half a year ago. Of course, the new “updates” bore no resemblance to the original narrative, with wildly inconsistent plot points and heavily altered character settings. After all, it had been six months since she casually spun that tale—remembering that the skull was green was already an impressive feat.
Wu Lian, though initially annoyed, soon found himself drawn in by her boundless creativity. He kept scrolling, unable to put down his phone. “How can someone be so infuriating yet so adorable at the same time?” Wu Lian wondered.
In the story, the Green Skull and the scholar who discovered her had a fight. One human and one ghost, both refused to speak, sitting back-to-back in stubborn silence. Eventually, the Green Skull broke the ice, “Why aren’t you talking to me? Did you take the wrong medicine or something?”
She continued, “If you say one word to me right now, I’ll forgive you. But if you don’t, I’ll pluck out all your hair and make you bald like me!”
When Wu Lian read that part, he couldn’t help but chuckle. He finally responded, “I’m upset.”
“Why?” Shang Xiaoxia replied immediately, genuinely confused. She hadn’t said a word to upset Wu Lian today. Besides, he wasn’t the type to lose his temper over nothing.
Wu Lian sighed. He realized that if he didn’t explain, Shang Xiaoxia would never figure it out. Her mind was often consumed with other people’s gossip, leaving her oblivious to her immediate surroundings. So, he typed back, “I’m jealous.”
Shang Xiaoxia was even more confused. “Jealous of who?” she thought, baffled.
There were only a few people present earlier: Cheng Shiyin, Lin Xin, Gu Nian, and herself. Excluding the men, that left just her and Cheng Shiyin. But Cheng Shiyin had barely interacted with Wu Lian, leaving only one plausible explanation—herself.
“But why would he be jealous of me?” she wondered. She had no close male friends besides Wu Lian.
“Wait… could it be Lin Xin?” she thought, her confusion deepening.
“Did Wu Lian know that Lin Xin was male? If so, then Cheng Shiyin likely knew too—and possibly Gu Nian as well,” she realized, stunned.
“Oh my god,” she thought, the revelation striking her with stunning force.
