Lin Xin’s eyes widened in horror at Wu Lian’s provocative repetition of his earlier plea for help, reminding him of the vulnerability he had tried to conceal. His mind, still fuzzy with embarrassment and tension, spiraled further as Wu Lian’s teasing words sank in, deepening his panic. For a moment, Lin Xin forgot his original intention—to simply have Cheng Shiyin help him sit up. His cheeks flushed, and in desperation, he forced his arms to prop himself up—defying the drug’s effects like the protagonist of a martial arts epic breaking free from paralysis at the brink of death.

“I don’t need help! Really, I don’t!” Lin Xin waved his hands frantically, his voice tinged with panic.

But Wu Lian wasn’t about to let Lin Xin off the hook so easily. “Don’t be shy,” he said with a smirk. “If you need help, you can count on me. I’m happy to ‘finish the job.’”

To Lin Xin, Wu Lian now looked like Shang Xiaoxia’s mischievous spirit incarnate, his every step closer spelling doom. Lin Xin scrambled backward in terror, mumbling, “I-I can manage! No need to trouble yourself!”

But Wu Lian breezed past Lin Xin without hesitation and headed straight for Gu Nian, who was still trembling in the corner. He grabbed Gu Nian by the collar and yanked him to his feet, dragging him away. “I already got the full story out of him,” Wu Lian said coldly. “The drug works quickly but isn’t particularly strong. Just let it run its course, and you’ll be fine.”

With that, Wu Lian mercifully let Lin Xin off the hook, though the reprieve felt painfully temporary.

Wu Lian’s blunt words were so startlingly direct that Cheng Shiyin turned crimson, flustered beyond words. She covered her face and slipped out of the room, leaving Lin Xin to sit in stunned silence as he tried to process what he’d just heard.

At that moment, Lin Xin thought to himself, “Should I ask for help now? Would it be too late?”

To anyone else, this situation might sound hard to believe, but Lin Xin had spent half a year as a man without fully coming to terms with his new reality. While others might have eagerly explored the “novelties” of their transformed bodies, Lin Xin had avoided it entirely, choosing denial over discovery.

Aside from, well, “that,” he hadn’t dared to confront or explore any other functions of his altered anatomy. Logically, he knew he couldn’t keep avoiding it forever, but he had hoped to delay the inevitable.

Now, sitting there trembling, Lin Xin’s hand shook as he reached down. His fingers were light, as though they were still reluctant, and his mind raced with self-conscious thoughts. “Was this really the time? Here, of all places?” The idea of having his “first time” in a karaoke room felt way too bold for his comfort.

Meanwhile, outside the room, Cheng Shiyin leaned against the door, her ears straining to catch any sound from within. She wasn’t sure what she was hoping to hear—or if she really wanted to hear anything at all. Her own body felt uncomfortably warm, as though she too were under the lingering effects of whatever had hit Lin Xin.

Unbeknownst to Cheng Shiyin, her gaze drifted back to the door, and through the tiniest crack, her eyes locked with Lin Xin’s. In that moment, their connection triggered something inside Lin Xin—a visceral reaction as though a gate to an entirely new world had been forced open.

“Bang!” The door burst open again, this time revealing a flustered staff member, Ms. Wang, who had come to beg Wu Lian and Cheng Shiyin not to call the police.

But what Ms. Wang saw next made her regret every life decision. A stray stream shot out, creating an arc across the room and splattering unpredictably in every direction.

Ms. Wang froze in stunned disbelief before fainting on the spot, overwhelmed by the chaos. Wu Lian, quick to act, retrieved the staff member’s camera and discreetly pocketed the memory card. What his plans were—whether to use it for revenge or as a prank on Shang Xiaoxia—no one could say.

In the end, the group decided not to involve the authorities. Gu Nian, the instigator, had already suffered a severe enough punishment—he had completely lost his mind.

From that day on, Gu Nian, once the school’s undisputed heartthrob, tumbled irreversibly from his pedestal. He became the epitome of melancholy—a “tragic beauty” who radiated sadness and constant wariness of the world. He feared anything unexpected and avoided all stick-like objects.

Gu Nian found himself shuddering at the mere sight of columns in buildings or even tall trees, haunted by memories he couldn’t escape. He even stopped using chopsticks, and if his gaze happened to fall on his own fingers, he could break into sobs for half an hour.

The group decided to let him go, as he had already suffered enough.

However, Gu Nian’s accomplice—who had advertised on Weibo, sold illicit videos through WeChat, and introduced the likes of “Rose” and “Peony” to Gu Nian—wasn’t so lucky. Just like the man who had recorded the video, this accomplice was swiftly caught in the grasp of the law, unable to evade justice.

Author’s Note
[SAN points (Sanity)] are a value used in Lovecraftian tabletop games. When SAN hits zero, the player loses their grip on reality and descends into madness.
Gu Nian’s story officially ends here. I feel like driving in this novel has been especially challenging!
