Kyrie bit her lip hard, the tremor in her chest deepening. If only she had confessed her feelings sooner, perhaps it would have been her finger adorned with that ring now.
Surely Zanarf would have dived into the deep for her sake, bringing back the legendary pearl as a token of his love.
Another drop of regret slid from her lashes, darkening the stone floor.
That night too, it should have been her in Lord Zanarf’s embrace.

She had stood just beyond that same door, tears soaking her palms as muffled sounds drifted through the walls.

Kyrie wiped her tears, straightened her posture, and, as if nothing had happened, descended the castle stairs towards the harbor.
On the way, she paused at a window and tossed the package she was holding out of the castle towards the sea below. It made a splash sound once before it disappeared into the deep.
“I don’t need worthless things.” she murmured. “Things without value. For this island, and for Zanarf should just-…”
A familiar voice called from the corridor below.
“Kyrie! The regular merchant ship has arrived at the harbor. That trader’s been looking for you. He says the medicinal herbs you requested are in.”
“Thank you.” Kyrie replied with a soft smile. “I was just on my way.. I also had some things I wanted to sell.”
She smiled at the familiar servant she passed.
Merchant ships periodically arrived at this island, stopping at various islands along the way. The silk thread spun on this island was a local specialty, an item that fetched high prices on the continent because it possessed the most exquisite luster, nothing else in the market came even close to its quality.
The merchants were greedy for business. If something looked even remotely promising, and it might make them substantial profit, things like allies and enemies meant nothing. Hiring skilled navigators, slipping through whirlpools, they came to this island seeking rare and valuable items.
But the islanders were tight-lipped; not a single one would speak of this island’s affairs to mere merchants. Through long experience, they knew that saying unnecessary things to outsiders could ultimately threaten the island’s peace.
Naturally, no one would even try to tell the merchants about Zanarf attacking Franz’s ship or that he had taken the prince’s wife, the beloved Princess Floria, as his bride. Since Zanarf had taken the throne, the unity of the islanders had grown even stronger.
