Yun Haotian had also signed up for the cooking class, hoping to improve his culinary skills.
Though the academy was a bit far from the city center, the instructors here were all top-tier chefs with authoritative reputations.
And their expertise spanned nearly every cuisine imaginable.
What Yun Haotian hadn’t expected, however, was to see Shen Jingnian here.
Shen Jingnian, at a cooking academy?
Was he… learning to cook?
Impossible.
Absolutely impossible.
His uncle loathed the kitchen. He often said that a real man who wallowed in the kitchen was simply degrading himself.
Could his eyes be playing tricks on him?
Rubbing them hard to be sure, Yun Haotian confirmed it wasn’t a mirage and sprinted over. “Uncle! It really is you!”
Hearing Yun Haotian’s voice, Shen Jingnian stiffened.
A cold sweat ran down his spine.
He had deliberately chosen a training center far from the city to avoid running into anyone he knew.
And yet… here he was, caught by someone he definitely didn’t want to see.
His luck was truly terrible today.
“What are you doing here?” Shen Jingnian’s gaze flicked coldly to Yun Haotian.
“I…” Yun Haotian paused, as if a thought struck him. “Uncle, what are you doing here? This is a cooking class! You’re not here to learn how to cook, right?”
“Of course not!” Shen Jingnian denied it outright.
“Then what are you doing here?” Yun Haotian squinted.
His instincts screamed— something about this was off. Very off.
As Shen Jingnian struggled to think of a plausible excuse, Yun Haotian suddenly shouted, “Oh! I get it! I know why you’re here!”
“Don’t guess wildly,” Shen Jingnian said, his brows knitting. “It’s not what you think…”
Before he could finish, Yun Haotian grabbed his arm, eyes shining, full of gratitude. “Uncle! You came because you knew someone borrowed my car and you wanted to pick me up! Thank you, Uncle! You are literally the best uncle in the world!”
Hearing this, Shen Jingnian finally relaxed.
“Yes, that’s right. I came to pick you up.”
“Aaaah! Uncle, you’re so kind to me! I’m so touched!”
Yun Haotian flung open the passenger seat door. “Let’s go, Uncle!”
“Go?”
Go… where?
Shen Jingnian’s mind raced— he had a class in ten minutes and wasn’t sure what was happening.
Yun Haotian buckled his seatbelt, grinning. “Back home! Weren’t you here specifically to pick me up?”
Shen Jingnian: “……”
He suddenly felt like hitting someone.
A few seconds later, he circled to the driver’s side, opened the door, and got in.
Yun Haotian connected the Bluetooth and played his favorite Peking opera. “By the way, Uncle, how did you know I signed up for a class here?”
Shen Jingnian froze.
Yun Haotian had enrolled too?
And if so… how was he supposed to keep coming to class?
Six hundred yuan per session. Eight sessions left!
“I’m your uncle,” Shen Jingnian said coolly. “What can you possibly hide from me?”
Yun Haotian chuckled. “Fair point.”
Soon, the car was filled with the lilting tones of Peking opera.
Leaning back in his seat, Yun Haotian cooed, “Uncle, for me, you’ve not only developed a taste for Peking opera, you also drove all this way just to pick me up. You’re spoiling me way too much~~”
He playfully patted Shen Jingnian’s shoulder, his movements annoyingly flirtatious.
“Behave yourself. Don’t get handsy,” Shen Jingnian said, his skin crawling.
“Aw, I’m just telling the truth~~” Yun Haotian purred, mimicking a girl’s playful pout. “You’re so mean, clearly care about me, but you act all cold, thinking it’ll push me away, huh?”
Shen Jingnian: “……”
Did he have to be so damn loud?
Meanwhile, in Beijing.
The Shi family estate.
Chen Yin had originally planned to be in Beijing for just a two-day meeting.
But due to some delays, she ended up staying over three months.
During this time, she made it a point to visit Madame Shi whenever she could, keeping her company and chatting with her.
Now, Chen Yin accompanied Madame Shi through the back garden.
It was winter, when most things withered and died.
But the plum blossoms in the garden were in full bloom, fiery red against the snow.
Madame Shi, holding Chen Yin’s arm, gazed at the blossoms, a smile playing on her lips. “Ayin, do you like plum blossoms?”
“The Three Friends of Winter—I certainly do,” Chen Yin replied. “Though, compared to ordinary red plum, I prefer the green plum.”
Green plums were elegant and unobtrusive, favored by scholars and literati.
“I remember our little Shengbao loved red plums the most. She was only two months old. Every time she cried, I’d show her a fake red plum and she’d stop immediately,” Madame Shi said, sighing softly.
“That branch of plum is still with me today. I hope one day Shengbao will return so I can tell her about her childhood.”
As the year drew to a close, Madame Shi’s longing for her granddaughter grew stronger.
Recently, no matter what she did, her thoughts always returned to Shengbao.
For ordinary families, New Year meant joyful reunions.
But for Madame Shi, it was like surviving a tribulation.
While others laughed and celebrated, she felt sorrow and despair.
Chen Yin gently turned to her. “Qiongfang, don’t dwell on it. Though Shengbao isn’t here, you still have Xiaoyue and An’an by your side. The New Year is coming—focus on the happy moments you do have.”
“Happy moments?” Madame Shi’s smile was tinged with bitter self-mockery. “Ayin, do you think I have anything happy left to remember?”
After the tragedy that befell her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, her world had turned gray.
No other colors remained.
Others advised her to let go, but how could she?
Such a happy family… such a lovely granddaughter… all gone overnight.
Chen Yin, being a mother herself, deeply understood Madame Shi’s pain. But she also didn’t know how to ease it.
Then she suddenly brightened. “Right, Qiongfang, do you remember the little miracle doctor I told you about before?”
“Of course,” Madame Shi nodded.
Chen Yin, proud and aloof, rarely praised anyone. But the young miracle doctor, Jiang Ning, was the first.
Plus, she had saved Chen Yin’s life.
So Madame Shi’s impression of her was deep.
“The work in Beijing is wrapping up, and I’ll be returning to A City soon. Ayin, why don’t you come back with me? You can clear your mind, and also… your head condition isn’t fully healed yet. Meeting Miss Jiang might help—she may be able to cure you.”
