Even though their previous game had lasted more than two hours, Shen Jingnian still felt unsatisfied.

“Alright.”

Coincidentally, Jiang Ning hadn’t had her fill either.

According to Go etiquette, the winner played first, so this time Jiang Ning held the black stones.

Her first move landed casually—right in the center star.

Shen Jingnian raised a brow.

Playing against her always brought a different feeling each time.

Since he had already grasped her rhythm from the last game, Shen Jingnian played with exceptional focus this round. Every move was made with great care.

Jiang Ning was the same.

Although she had figured out Shen Jingnian’s general style in their previous match, the reason she’d won then was because he hadn’t seen through her trap.

If it were someone else, she’d just repeat the same trick.

But today…

Her opponent was Shen Jingnian.

In front of him, she naturally couldn’t use the same tactic again!

Time slipped by, minute by minute.

In their eyes, only the board and the battle remained.

Move after move.

Neither yielded an inch!

A duel between experts—every step deadly.

The clash was breathtaking.

If a skilled Go player had been watching from the side, they would surely have been fired up.

One hour passed.
Two hours.
Three…

From three in the afternoon until seven-thirty in the evening.

The board was a battleground, but still they were evenly matched.

Jiang Ning had never played a match lasting over four hours.

This was her first time.

And she had to admit—the feeling was… extraordinary.

She liked it.

As she played, she snacked on desserts and sipped clear, refreshing Zishan Cloud Mist tea. It was impossibly relaxing.

Just as she picked up another piece of dessert—

Shen Jingnian’s elegant fingers slowly placed a stone. His magnetic voice followed:

“Ning Ning, thank you for letting me win.”

The way he said “Ning Ning”… was indescribably pleasant.

Jiang Ning froze, looked down at the board, and only then realized—

She had lost.

Lost?

Someone had actually beaten her?

Unbelievable.

Truly, a moment of careless pride leads to defeat.

She raised a brow and called his name.

“Shen Jingnian.”

“Hm?” Shen Jingnian looked at her, deep phoenix eyes dark as ink.

No one had ever called his full name like that.

Jiang Ning was the first.

Strangely… he really enjoyed hearing her say it.

Whenever she called him like that, his heart tingled uncontrollably—foreign yet exhilarating.

Jiang Ning spoke again. “Another round?”

A worthy opponent is hard to find, she thought. Two games were far from enough.

Besides, she had just figured out Shen Jingnian’s patterns.

She needed a proper fight.

“Alright.” He nodded.

He felt the same.

It was rare to meet someone whose rhythm matched his so well. He wasn’t about to waste the opportunity.

Chess reveals character.

Through these matches, he felt he understood her a little more.

And so—

Another bloody battle began.

Unknowingly, night fell. It was already eleven.

Four games in total.

Two wins for Jiang Ning, two wins for Shen Jingnian.

A perfect tie.

Jiang Ning stood and stretched lazily. “Shen Jingnian, I didn’t expect you to be this good at Go!”

Stretching like that should’ve looked ungraceful.

Yet on her, it was natural—pleasing to the eyes.

“You’re amazing as well,” Shen Jingnian said as he brewed tea. “You’re the first person I’ve ever met who can play at this level.”

Hardly anyone could tie with him.

Jiang Ning was the first.

She checked her phone. “Shame it’s already eleven. Otherwise, I’d love a few more rounds.”

Shen Jingnian’s thin lips curved. “We have plenty of time.”

“Right.” She nodded. “Plenty of time.”

She picked up her bag. “Let’s find somewhere to eat?”

She hadn’t felt hungry during the match, but once she stood up, she realized she was starving.

“Okay.”

They left the private room—Jiang Ning in front, Shen Jingnian behind.

It was already after ten, and most restaurants were closed. Perfect timing for late-night street food.

Jiang Ning hadn’t had late-night snacks in ages.

Her last time was a month ago.

“What do you want to eat? My treat tonight,” she said.

“I’m not picky.”

“Do you mind street stalls? I know a roadside BBQ place that’s insanely good. At this hour, there might already be a line.”

Nothing proves a restaurant’s worth like one thing—

A line.

Or two things—

A long, constant line.

Her favorite BBQ stall happened to be one of those.

And tonight was a rare chance.

“Sure. I often eat street food alone anyway,” Shen Jingnian said calmly.

“That’s perfect. Let’s go.”

He pulled out his keys. “I’ll get the car. Wait at the teahouse entrance.”

“No.” Jiang Ning grabbed his arm instinctively.

He paused, a bit stiff. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s hard to park over there. Let’s walk. It’s not far.”

“Alright.”

The summer night breeze brushed past as they walked side by side beneath the plane trees.

Whatever they were talking about made Jiang Ning laugh, dimples blooming lightly. Suddenly, Shen Jingnian stopped, his gaze landing on a row of shared bicycles by the curb.

“Ning Ning, let’s bike there?”

“Bicycle?” she asked.

“Yes.”

She shook her head. “I can’t ride.”

He chuckled. “Hard to imagine there’s something you can’t do.”

She laughed too. “Looks like I’m pretty outstanding in your eyes, Ninth Master Shen.”

“You are,” he said seriously.

Jiang Ning had expected him to tease back, not respond so earnestly. It left her a little embarrassed.

“Ning Ning, wait here. I’ll get a bike.”

“But I can’t ride—”

“I can. There’s one with a back seat. I’ll take you,” Shen Jingnian said.

“…Okay then.”

He returned quickly with a sky-blue bike.

One foot on the pedal, one on the ground, he glanced at her. “Ning Ning, hop on.”

It was just an ordinary bike.

Yet in his hands, it suddenly had the aura of a luxury car.

That was the power of presence.

Jiang Ning climbed on sideways, one hand holding her phone, the other gently supporting his lean, strong waist.

“Hold tight,” his voice floated back through the wind.

She laughed. “What, are you planning to race on a bicycle?”

“Of course. Back in school, no one in my class could ride faster than me.”

“Liar.”

The moment she said it—

The bike shot forward.

Wind whipped across her cheeks.

He wasn’t lying.

Jiang Ning immediately wrapped her arms around his waist to steady herself.

Feeling her arm circle him, Shen Jingnian’s Adam’s apple bobbed. A strange surge of strength coursed through him. Out of her sight, the corners of his lips lifted slightly.

Tonight, even the wind was sweet.

Following the map, they reached the BBQ stall in ten minutes.

A line had already formed.

Jiang Ning got off. “I’ll get in line. Park the bike and come find me.”

“Alright.”

Watching her walk away, Shen Jingnian felt a pang of regret—maybe he shouldn’t have biked so fast. He could’ve enjoyed that moment longer.

He jogged back after parking. “Ning Ning, there’s an ice cream cart over there. What flavor do you want? I’ll get some.”

“Chocolate.”

“Got it.”

He went off to buy them.

Soon, he returned with two cones. “Here.”

“Thanks.”

They ate ice cream while waiting in line. The usually silent man was unexpectedly talkative with her—enough to make her laugh more than once.

A leaf drifted down and landed on Jiang Ning’s hair.

“Ning Ning, don’t move.”

“What is it?”

“You have something on your head.” He bent down, plucking the leaf gently from her hair.

His shadow fell over her, carrying a faint pine scent—cool, clean. For some reason, Jiang Ning’s heartbeat suddenly spun out of control.

Like summer thunder.

Nearby stood a couple.

The girl glanced enviously at Jiang Ning and Shen Jingnian, then glared at her boyfriend. “Look at that guy—handsome and attentive. His girlfriend asked for napkins and he handed them immediately. And he even picks leaves out of her hair!”

“Alright, alright,” the boyfriend muttered, eyes glued to his phone. “I’ll pick leaves for you too.”

“I don’t want leaves! You’re always on that stupid phone. I’m not eating anymore! You eat alone!” She stormed off angrily.

The guy looked baffled.

What was wrong with looking at his phone? Before he had a girlfriend, he always looked at his phone too.

Girls these days were too sensitive.

Too hard to please.

Shen Jingnian silently observed, feeling lucky he had done his research beforehand—never checking his phone around Jiang Ning.

He needed to study harder from now on.

After about ten minutes, it was finally their turn.

Jiang Ning grabbed a metal tray and handed it to him. “Don’t hold back. Pick whatever you want. I’m treating.”

“Then I won’t be polite.”

It was his first time at a street BBQ stall, so he hesitated. Only when he saw someone open the freezer and choose skewers did he copy them.

“Why are you picking all vegetables?” Jiang Ning tossed in a bunch of meat skewers. “Try their grilled oysters—they’re amazing.”

Oysters.

He froze.

He hadn’t eaten anything remotely… stimulating these past few days. He coughed lightly. “S-sure.”

Whatever he was thinking turned his face beet red—down to his neck and ears.

Jiang Ning didn’t notice at all, still picking her favorite items. “Let’s get ten oysters.”

Just then, Yun Haotian and his friend Xu Ziqi drove by to get supper. Xu Ziqi spotted someone familiar in line and nearly screamed.

“H-Holy—! Brother Yun, look! Isn’t that… isn’t that Ninth Master Shen?!”
