Old Madam Shen rolled her eyes at Shen Jingnian.
“That’s called Murphy’s Law — you better believe it. When the day comes that you can’t win over your future wife, don’t come crying to me! I won’t help you! Unless… you beg me!”

As she reached the end of her sentence, she tilted her chin up in smug pride.

Heh heh heh!

She was just waiting for the day this stubborn brat would come crawling to her.

Just imagining Shen Jingnian shedding tears over some girl was enough to make her giddy with anticipation.

Shen Jingnian, seeing his mother lost in her fantasy again, spoke calmly, “Mom, things like that may happen to others… but never to me.”

For someone like him, chasing after women was a complete waste of time — time better spent making money.

At least money could satisfy both his material desires and soothe his spirit.

Women? They only spent his money.

And why should he earn money just to hand it over to someone who wasn’t even related to him by blood?

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

What Shen Jingnian didn’t know at that moment…
Was that one day, not too far in the future, he’d willingly hand over everything he owned — to her.

But that…
Was a story for another day.

“Quit pretending,” Old Madam Shen huffed and kicked him lightly.
“Don’t make me start using idioms to curse you out!”

Idioms? To curse people out?

Hearing this, Yun Haotian perked up, curious.
“Grandma, how do you curse someone using idioms? Teach me!”

Old Madam Shen pointed at Shen Jingnian.
“Listen carefully!”

“Got it!” Yun Haotian nodded eagerly.

Old Madam Shen then declared loudly, “He’s like a cornered rat making a desperate leap,
the chicken flies and he jumps, can’t stop eating crap, and when the rabbit dies — he gets cooked!”

PFFFFT—!!

Yun Haotian doubled over laughing, completely losing control.

His grandmother was a true comedic genius.

In this entire world, probably only Old Madam Shen dared to point at Shen Jingnian’s nose and call him a dumb mutt.

And the best part? Shen Jingnian didn’t even dare talk back.

Little did Yun Haotian know that one day, there would be someone else besides Old Madam Shen who would not only call Shen Jingnian a dumb dog —
But make him willingly call her “Daddy.”

“Quit laughing!”
Just as Yun Haotian was delighting in his uncle’s misfortune, Old Madam Shen’s thwap landed right on his head.

“You think you’re not a dumb dog too?!”

Yun Haotian: “…”

When gods fight, mortals suffer.

…

Meanwhile…

On the other side of the hospital, Jiang Ning arrived at Grandpa Zhou’s ward carrying a bag of nutritional supplements.

The ward was shared — four patients to a room.

Jiang Ning’s beauty was impossible to ignore. With her refined features and striking presence, even in a simple white T-shirt and jeans, she stood out instantly. The moment she stepped through the door, everyone in the room turned to look, murmuring among themselves —
Who’s this young lady visiting? Which family does she belong to?

Even Zhou Jinpeng, Grandpa Jiang’s old factory buddy, didn’t recognize her bare faced.

Not until Jiang Ning walked straight up to him and smiled, “Grandpa Zhou, are you feeling better today?”

Grandpa Zhou?
She was talking to him?

Zhou Jinpeng blinked in confusion.
“Young lady, do we know each other?”

None of his relatives looked anything like this stunner.

“I’m Jiang Ning, Grandpa Zhou.”

“Jiang… Ning?” Zhou Jinpeng repeated the name slowly. It sounded familiar, but when he looked back at her face, it didn’t ring any bells at all.

Just as he was trying to figure it out, Jiang Ning added, “Jiang Fuhai is my grandfather.”

Jiang Fuhai?!

The name hit him like a jolt. Zhou Jinpeng’s eyes widened as he stared at her.
“You… You’re little Ning? You’re little Ning?!”

“That’s me.” Jiang Ning nodded with a smile.

Zhou Jinpeng squinted, staring at her with disbelief.

In his memory — and in Jiang Fuhai’s stories — Jiang Ning had always been the girl caked in heavy makeup, wearing strange, outdated gray clothes.
She was barely in her teens but always looked like she was pushing forty.

And the way she carried herself…
So arrogant, always acting like no one was good enough.

In short —
Zhou Jinpeng had never had a good impression of Jiang Ning.

But the Jiang Ning standing here today —
Not only did her appearance change, but her sense of style was also  completely different, and even her temperament seemed… transformed.

If it were the old Jiang Ning, she would never have called a janitor like him “Grandpa Zhou.”

Heck, she used to call her own grandfather, Jiang Fuhai, just “hey!” — not even a proper name.

That’s why Zhou Jinpeng always said, “Jiang Fuhai raised an ungrateful brat.”

But today…

That “ungrateful brat” seemed like a whole new person.

Zhou Jinpeng swallowed his surprise and asked cautiously, “Then… where’s your grandpa?”

“My grandpa had something come up. He’ll be by a little later.”
As she spoke, Jiang Ning placed the bag of nutritional supplements on the bedside table.
“Grandpa Zhou, these are from him. He hopes you get well soon.”

Zhou Jinpeng simply stared at her.

For a long time, he said nothing.

What on earth had this girl gone through?

How did she change so suddenly?

Jiang Ning, unfazed by his silence, casually took out a can of milk powder from the bag.
“Grandpa Zhou, let me mix you a cup. It’s rich in protein, calcium, and iron — helps your recovery.”

Without waiting for permission, she swiftly prepared a warm cup of milk.

Zhou Jinpeng took the cup, stunned, then finally murmured,
“Th-thank you…”

What in the world is this girl up to?!

Still, deep down, Zhou Jinpeng genuinely hoped this change was real —
That she had truly turned over a new leaf.

Maybe then, his old buddy Jiang Fuhai could live out the rest of his days in peace and happiness.

After Zhou Jinpeng finished his milk, Jiang Ning smiled again, “Grandpa Zhou, since your legs aren’t doing great, I’ll go grab a wheelchair and take you out to the garden for a walk, alright?”

Zhou Jinpeng had grown up poor. So poor, in fact, that he couldn’t afford to marry until middle age — and even then, he married a divorced woman with three kids.

Still, he treated her and her children like his own, giving them everything he had.
He worked like a mule to raise them, believing his sincerity would be repaid with love.

But when his wife passed away, those three children turned on him in a heartbeat.
They kicked him out and welcomed back their biological father instead.

Now, Zhou Jinpeng had nothing.
Not a penny.
He’d been in the hospital for days, and not a single relative had come to visit.

Forget walking in the garden — even just being seen as a person again felt like too much to ask.

So when Jiang Ning offered, a warmth spread through his chest.

“Th-thank you… that’s very kind of you,” he said, a little embarrassed.

“It’s no trouble at all,” Jiang Ning replied, returning shortly with a wheelchair.

It was early summer. The hospital garden was in full bloom, bursting with color and life.

The sun was shining a bit too brightly, so Jiang Ning pushed the wheelchair over to a shaded pavilion.

It was a large one, with plenty of people sitting inside enjoying the cool breeze.

Near the entrance, an older woman was chatting with a young couple carrying a baby.

“You only have one daughter?” the auntie asked, eyebrows raised.

“Yes,” the young mother answered politely.

The older woman clicked her tongue,
“Then you better hurry up and have a son!”

The young father gave a courteous reply,
“We’re not planning on having a second child.”

That set the auntie off. She leapt to her feet.
“What?! No second child? No son? Are you trying to end your family line?! You’ll be sent to the 18th level of hell after you die!”

She jabbed a finger at them.
“No son to support you? When you’re old, who’s going to take care of your body? Huh? Pathetic, just pathetic!”

The young mother, unable to hold back, said, “Auntie, it’s the 21st century. Men and women are equal now. That kind of thinking… is just wrong.”

The old woman scoffed.
“Equal?! Don’t talk nonsense! Let me tell you, young lady — women will never be equal to men. Think about it! Since ancient times, which women ever made great contributions to the country or society? It’s always been the men holding everything up!”

At that very moment, Old Madam Shen arrived at the pavilion for some fresh air.

She had just stepped into earshot when she heard this ridiculous rant.

Her blood pressure instantly spiked to 180. She rolled up her sleeves, fully prepared to go to war with this backward, misogynistic old banshee—

But just then, a clear, pleasant female voice rang out across the air…
