Shen Jingnian was a staunch believer in never getting married.

Because of this, over the years, he had never been in a relationship. No first love, no unforgettable flame — his one true love had always been himself.

So, Shen Jingnian would never allow an outsider — someone with no blood ties to him — to share in his wealth, to claim even a part of the business empire he had built with his own hands!

What was his, would always be his — and only his!

Yun Haotian looked up at Shen Jingnian.
“Uncle, you sound so sure of yourself. Just because you haven’t met the right person now doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. What if you do fall in love later? Won’t that just make you eat your own words?”

“Eat my own words? Only the weak worry about things like that.”
Shen Jingnian’s lips curled slightly in a smirk. “I’ve always been loyal — to myself.”

Ding!

The elevator arrived at the VIP floor. Shen Jingnian stepped out first. As he moved, a wave of discomfort surged in his chest. He instinctively raised his hand, fist to lips, and let out a few quiet coughs.

As if remembering something, he handed a prescription slip to Yun Haotian.
“Send this to Assistant Wang. Have him arrange for the pharmacy to prepare it and deliver a batch every day.”

Yun Haotian widened his eyes in disbelief.
“Uncle, are you seriously planning to take that mystery medicine? That woman was clearly being dramatic! She’s so young — she probably hasn’t even passed her herbalist certification! What would she know about medicine? What if she was sent by your rivals to harm you?”

He paused, then continued, “How about this — let me find a reliable traditional doctor to give you a proper diagnosis. If your condition really is like she said, you can always take the medicine afterward. Better safe than sorry.”

You can never be too careful.

Someone like Shen Jingnian, standing at the top, had no shortage of enemies. Some couldn’t beat him head-on and would resort to underhanded methods. Who could say for sure that Jiang Ning wasn’t a plant from one of those enemies?

…

Before long, the two arrived at the high-tier VIP ward.

Lying on the hospital bed was a kind-faced elderly woman. As soon as Shen Jingnian and Yun Haotian entered, the caregiver beside her quickly helped her sit up.
“Jingnian, Haotian, you’re here.”

“Careful, Mom.” Shen Jingnian strode to the bedside and took over from the caregiver, helping his mother sit up with practiced ease.

“Grandma.”
Yun Haotian stood respectfully to the side and greeted her.

The woman lying on the bed was none other than Old Madam Shen — Shen Jingnian’s mother.

She had given birth to Shen Jingnian at the age of 45. Now, with Shen Jingnian just past thirty, she was already seventy-five. Though she had reached an advanced age, her mental clarity and energy were impressive.

Once he had settled his mother upright, Shen Jingnian took a seat by the bed and began peeling an apple slowly.

Yun Haotian spoke next, “Grandma, how are you feeling today?”

Old Madam Shen smiled warmly.
“It’s just a soft tissue bruise, nothing serious. It’s not like I broke any bones. No need to fuss.”

She had recently been in a minor car accident. While the injuries weren’t serious, her advanced age meant she needed to stay in the hospital for observation.

“But it’s your uncle that has me worried,” she added, casting a glance at Shen Jingnian.

“What did I do?” Shen Jingnian was baffled by the sudden shift in attention.

“You’re not getting any younger, and yet you’ve never even held a girl’s hand. Don’t you find that embarrassing?”

Not getting any younger?

He hadn’t even turned twenty-nine yet, and she was talking like he was pushing eighty.

Shen Jingnian rubbed his temples.
“Mom, I’ve told you — I don’t believe in marriage.”

“Nonsense!”
Old Madam Shen cut him off before he could finish, pointing a finger at him and giving him a proper scolding.
“Who doesn’t get married? Your father’s biggest wish when he was alive was to see you and your sister happy and settled down with families of your own! Now even Haotian is about to get married. Your sister’s about to become a grandmother! And you — you’re still a lone wolf! How can I rest easy?”

Old Madam Shen and the late Master Shen had two children — a daughter and a son.

Shen Jingnian was called “Ninth” not because his parents had nine children, but because among the many cousins in the Shen family’s extended lineage, he ranked ninth in seniority.

When giving birth to her daughter, Old Madam Shen had suffered complications and was told she could no longer conceive. No one expected that at the age of 45, she would become pregnant again.

A child in her twilight years — that joy was beyond words. Both husband and wife doted on their miracle son like he was the rarest treasure. Fortunately, Shen Jingnian had never let them down. Though he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he had never developed the arrogance or recklessness typical of the wealthy elite. He was not only brilliant but also possessed extraordinary business talent.

The only thing that troubled Old Madam Shen about her otherwise perfect son — was that he refused to marry.

Yes, she was the matriarch of the Shen family.

But before that, she was just an ordinary mother.

She simply wished for her son to live like everyone else: fall in love, get married, have children… She wanted to become a grandmother while she was still around to enjoy it.

She sighed and continued,
“Even if you refuse to marry, can’t you at least date? Just try dating first!”

“I have no interest in dating,” Shen Jingnian replied calmly. “Besides, since I’ve already decided never to marry, why bother dragging some poor girl into it?”

“Then what are you interested in?” Old Madam Shen was practically fuming.

“Making money,” Shen Jingnian said with a straight face.

Old Madam Shen’s brow furrowed.
“Then go marry your money and live happily ever after!”

Shen Jingnian gave a small nod. “That’s exactly my plan.”

Old Madam Shen gritted her teeth, visibly shaking with frustration, wishing she could pin her son down and give him a good beating.

But the little rascal didn’t even flinch. Instead, he casually handed her an apple.
“Here, have some fruit.”

“Eat your damn apple!”
Old Madam Shen slapped the fruit out of his hand with a loud smack.

Shen Jingnian bent down and picked it up off the floor.
“Mom, this apple costs thirty yuan. If you’re angry, take it out on me — not the money.”

“Money, money, money — all you care about is money! Other people save their fortune so they can pass it down to their children. What about you? When you’re dead, not even a soul will be around to visit your grave! What’s the point of hoarding all those cold, lifeless numbers?”

Shen Jingnian replied smoothly, “Those cold, lifeless numbers will get me to No.1 on Forbes’ Global Billionaires List.”

“So what if you’re No.1?”
Old Madam Shen rolled her eyes.
“What’s there to be proud of? Dying alone without a wife or kids is the real tragedy!”

“There are millions who envy the top spot on Forbes, but no one dreams of being just another average person with a spouse and kids. You and Dad had both a son and daughter, sure — but did either of your names ever show up on the Forbes list?”

Old Madam Shen shot him a glare.
“Fine, fine, you win! You’re the best! You fly planes underwater!”

Yun Haotian couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
His grandma’s wit and sass were truly unmatched!

Old Madam Shen narrowed her eyes at Shen Jingnian and warned, “Heaven always balances the scales. Everyone will one day meet someone they can’t have. When the sky rages, it rains. When a man rages, he brings disaster upon himself. Just wait, boy — your road to chasing your future wife is bound to be a disaster!”

Someone he can’t have?
Chasing a wife?

A smirk tugged at Shen Jingnian’s lips.
“Mom, why don’t you take a look outside.”

“…Outside?”

Old Madam Shen blinked, confused, and turned her head toward the window.

Outside, the sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled the trees — everything was peaceful and calm.

“What about it?”

Shen Jingnian’s lips curved into a faint smirk.
“It’s not even dark yet, and you’ve already started dreaming.”
