The moment Qin He’s words fell; Cheng Zijun almost couldn’t believe his ears.

The air freezes.

Only after a long silence did he find his voice again.
“You said… who did Academician Chen sign with?”

“It’s with Heartbeat Games,” Qin He replied stiffly, his scalp tingling.

He couldn’t understand it either.

By all logic, the Cheng Corporation held the upper hand. Yet Chen still chose Heartbeat.

What kind of magic did that little company have… that both the Shen family and Academician Chen would side with them?

Bang!

Cheng Zijun slammed his fist onto the table, veins throbbing on his forehead.
“Impossible! Absolutely impossible! Academician Chen would never collaborate with Heartbeat! Qin He, you must have gotten this wrong!”

He refused to accept it.

But then Lin Yuze walked over, phone in hand.
“Zijun-ge, Heartbeat just made the official announcement on Weibo. Looks like it’s real.”

Cheng Zijun snatched the phone.

The post was barely three minutes old, yet already had thousands of comments:

【No way! Academician Chen is really collaborating with Heartbeat! The barrier between 2D and 3D is finally broken—this is history in the making!】

【I just hope Heartbeat’s game doesn’t disappoint.】

【Disgusting. They know they can’t compare to Cheng Corporation, so they secretly lured Chen away? Isn’t he the one who swore off commercial collaborations? They must have something on him!】

【So when is the game releasing? We’re waiting.】

【With such a big lineup, if Heartbeat doesn’t deliver, they’re going to lose face badly.】

【Academician Chen must be muddled. Anyone with half a brain would’ve chosen Cheng Corp. Doesn’t he care about his reputation?】

【Rumor has it Heartbeat’s new shareholder actually has some talent. Maybe their game will surprise us. Who knows, maybe the Sky Dome Award will end up in their hands.】

【Talent? No matter how capable that shareholder is, he can’t compare to Xie Huaijin. President Cheng is already a once-in-a-decade dark horse, and now the two of them have joined forces! With such a powerhouse combo, Heartbeat is nothing but a joke.】

【Ugh, Heartbeat is so disgusting. First they released fake game screenshots, now they stole Academician Chen before Cheng Corp could announce anything. Shameless! Luckily, President Cheng’s foundations are strong—he doesn’t even need Chen. Their game will shine regardless.】

The comment section was split between doubt and congratulations.

But one thing was undeniable: Academician Chen had signed with Heartbeat.

At that moment, Cheng Zijun’s hand trembled as he gripped the phone.

Why?

He was supposed to be the once-in-a-decade black horse of finance!

Had Chen gone mad? Was she not afraid of ruining her name by choosing Heartbeat?

Cheng Zijun forced himself to calm down and turned to Lin Yuze.
“Have you found Academician Chen’s savior yet?”

That mysterious savior—the one who once saved Chen’s life—was their only hope. If they could find them, perhaps they could use that leverage to seize Chen back from Heartbeat.

Lin Yuze shook his head. “Not yet.”

Cheng Zijun narrowed his eyes. “Keep looking. No matter the cost, we must find them.”

“…Got it. I’ll keep digging.”

Cheng Zijun dragged his fingers through his hair, frustration radiating from him.
“And arrange for me to meet Jiang Ning. Now.”

Heartbeat had already snatched two deals from under Cheng Corporation’s nose.

If he didn’t acquire Heartbeat immediately, there’d be nothing left to salvage.

But Lin Yuze simply looked at him.
“Zijun-ge, I’m afraid that’s something I can’t arrange anymore. Jiang Ning isn’t that love-blinded girl who used to come running whenever you beckoned. Not anymore.”

He sighed, then added, “Even if you go to her yourself, she probably won’t see you.”

Because the Jiang Ning of today… was no longer the same girl who used to follow behind him like a lovesick puppy.

Hearing this, Cheng Zijun sneered.
“Yuze, you’re overestimating her. Everything she’s doing now is just to get me to reach out first, to beg me to add her back on WeChat. You’ll see—if I send her a request right now, she’ll agree instantly.”

Lin Yuze shook his head. “I don’t believe that.”

“Fine! Don’t believe me? Then I’ll prove it to you.” Cheng Zijun whipped out his phone. “Give me her number.”

Lin Yuze sighed and pulled it from his contacts. “138…6812.”

Cheng Zijun typed it in, searched, and hit “Add Friend.” He even left a note: Cheng Zijun.

“Watch closely. Within one minute, she’ll accept. Not only that, but she’ll also send me one of her little love essays, begging me to take her back.”

His lips curled with smug certainty.

After all, wasn’t that Jiang Ning’s favorite thing to do—writing him paragraphs of heartfelt confessions? Not that he’d ever bothered to read them.

Lin Yuze rubbed his temples, exasperated.
“Zijun-ge, when will you open your eyes? Jiang Ning doesn’t love you anymore. She won’t add you back. And she definitely won’t send you a love letter.”

“Ha! If she doesn’t love me, who does she love? You?” Cheng Zijun’s tone was sharp, but his eyes glittered with arrogance. “Reality speaks louder than words.”

Before Lin Yuze could reply—

Ding-dong!

A WeChat notification popped up.

Cheng Zijun’s lips curved smugly. “See? I told you—Jiang Ning just sent me her essay.”

He knew it. Jiang Ning couldn’t live without him.

But when he glanced at the screen—

He froze.

It wasn’t Jiang Ning.

It was Zhang Shuyi.

She was just asking if he’d eaten yet.

Normally, he would’ve replied instantly. But today…

Today, he couldn’t even summon the mood.

Why?

Why wasn’t it Jiang Ning?

How long was she going to keep this up?

How could someone who once loved him so desperately… change overnight?

Cheng Zijun clenched his jaw. “She must not have checked her phone yet. Once she does, she’ll add me right away.”

Yes. That had to be it.

His eyes narrowed dangerously.
“Within one hour—mark my words—Jiang Ning will not only send me an essay begging for forgiveness, she’ll also come to me personally, bringing Heartbeat’s acquisition agreement.”

Lin Yuze just pressed his fingers against his temple, his exhaustion plain.
“Zijun-ge, face reality. Even if you wait an hour… a year… ten years… Jiang Ning will never come back to you.”

Cheng Zijun’s eyes flashed cold.
“Impossible. Jiang Ning will come. But I’ll never agree to remarry her. After all, the one I love most now… is Shuyi.”

…

Ningzhu Tower.

On the third-floor conference room, Jiang Ning sat across from Li Zhonglong, the founder of Double Excellence Property Management.

He held the acquisition proposal in his hand, his eyes narrowing at her.
“Miss Jiang, you’re sure you want to acquire our company for five million?”

The company was only two years old but already half in debt due to poor management. Li had long wanted to sell, but most buyers pressed the price far too low.

Jiang Ning’s offer was the first fair one.

“Yes.” She nodded slightly.

Li smiled. “Since you’re so sincere, I’ll have my assistant prepare the contract right away.”

“Go ahead.”

He waved at his assistant. “Xiao Wang, print the acquisition contract as per Miss Jiang’s request.”

The assistant exchanged a subtle look with him, then nodded knowingly.

Half an hour later, the contract was brought over.

Jiang Ning skimmed it—page after page—her eyes swift, movements crisp.

Li Zhonglong almost snorted aloud. Who reads a contract that fast? She was clearly pretending.

Feigning knowledge she didn’t have.

He hid a sly gleam in his eyes.
“Miss Jiang, the contract is quite long. There are many places you’ll need to sign. I’ll just point them out for you.”

Of course, the contract had been tampered with.

Instead of a full acquisition, the fine print only made her a “partner” with no actual shares. If the company turned a profit, she’d see none of it. Worse—if legal issues arose, like tax evasion—she would be the one held liable.

The perfect trap.

“Give me the pen,” Jiang Ning said softly.

Relief washed over Li. She hadn’t noticed.

Suppressing his glee, he passed her the pen.
“Please, Miss Jiang. Sign here.”

His heart raced.

Once her signature was down, it was legally binding. Then, she’d be his scapegoat forever.

Jiang Ning calmly signed page after page.

Li Zhonglong could barely hide the grin spreading across his face.

Three minutes later, she set the pen down and pushed the contract back to him.
“All signed.”

He snatched it up, unable to contain his delight. Standing, he extended his hand.
“Congratulations, Miss Jiang, you’re now officially one of us at Double Excellence!”

Jiang Ning’s lips curved faintly.
“Forgive me, President Li, but if I recall correctly, I came to acquire your company. Since when did I become one of your employees?”

“Acquire? What acquire?” He waved the contract with feigned innocence. “Didn’t you read it carefully? You didn’t sign an acquisition agreement at all!”

It was already sealed. Even if she regretted it, there was nothing she could do.

But Jiang Ning merely smiled coldly, unshaken.
“Is that so? Then perhaps you should take a closer look yourself—see exactly what I signed.”

Li flipped the pages—then froze.

His smile collapsed into stunned disbelief.

Because every single clause he had doctored… was neatly crossed out, with Jiang Ning’s handwritten annotations correcting them in red.

Her voice cut through the silence, cool and sharp.
“I’ve already marked every unreasonable clause. If you truly want this deal, print a proper contract. I’ll give you only one chance.”
