Wipe the dog shit off his shoes?

Grandpa Jiang stared at Zhang Lei in disbelief, wondering if his ears were deceiving him.

Even the two workers standing nearby thought they must have misheard.

Ma Gui couldn’t hold back. “Manager Zhang, making Old Jiang wipe your shoes—isn’t that plain humiliation?”

“That’s right, Manager Zhang. Why go out of your way to make things difficult for him?” Li Qiang added.

Zhang Lei only chuckled, lifting his gaze to Grandpa Jiang. “Humiliation? If you see it that way, then forget it. Clearly, you don’t care about this job anyway.”

Saying that, he pushed against the armrest as if to rise and leave.

Seeing this, Grandpa Jiang quickly pressed him down, panic flashing in his eyes.
“No, Manager Zhang, please—don’t go! I’ll do it. I’ll wipe them clean for you right now.”

It’s just wiping shoes, isn’t it?

He would simply take it as a change of trade.

There were shoe shiners on the streets everywhere.

Were they not also making a living?

Comforting himself with such thoughts, Grandpa Jiang pulled a tissue from the desk, bent one knee to the ground, and began wiping Zhang Lei’s shoes.

The sight made Li Qiang and Ma Gui rush forward in protest.
“Old Jiang, get up! Don’t do this—we don’t need to bow to such humiliation!”

It was obvious Zhang Lei was deliberately bullying him.

But Grandpa Jiang looked up at them with a smile, his tone steady.
“It’s fine. You two don’t need to stop me. To wipe Manager Zhang’s shoes is my honor.”

He was from the countryside, barely literate, old in years. Finding this job had not been easy.

If wiping Zhang Lei’s shoes could let him keep it—then wasn’t that a bargain?

Seeing his determination, Li Qiang quickly grabbed a tissue.
“Then I’ll help you wipe too.”

Ma Gui followed suit.
“And me as well.”

Men of the old generation valued loyalty above all.

They couldn’t bear to watch their brother suffer this humiliation alone.

But Zhang Lei’s brows drew together in displeasure. “You two, get lost. I only want Old Jiang to wipe them.”

Grandpa Jiang lifted his head, still smiling at his brothers.
“Old Li, Old Ma—I understand your hearts. That’s enough.”

Li Qiang and Ma Gui gritted their teeth in fury, but under such tyranny, they were powerless.

Zhang Lei leaned back into his chair with a smirk. “Keep going, Old Jiang. And be thorough.”

“Yes, yes…” Grandpa Jiang nodded quickly, wiping carefully.

Zhang Lei’s voice dripped with venom.
“Old Jiang, weren’t you bragging about your precious granddaughter, how she got first place in the exam? Funny—your granddaughter might be first, but look at you, her grandfather, on your knees wiping my shoes.”

So what if she scored first?

So what if she got into First High School?

His son hadn’t gotten into First High, hadn’t topped any exams—but at least he didn’t have to live as pathetically as Jiang Fuhai.

Some people’s lives were just pitiful.

Grandpa Jiang said nothing. He only lowered his head, wiping with quiet focus.

After five or six minutes, he tossed the tissue into the bin.
“Manager Zhang, I’m done.”

Zhang Lei glanced at his shoes. “Hmm. Not bad.”

Grandpa Jiang stood with difficulty. “Then I’ll return to work.”

“Stop!”

Zhang Lei’s voice cracked like a whip.

Grandpa Jiang turned, puzzled.
“What is it, Manager Zhang? Is something wrong?”

Zhang Lei snorted. “Didn’t I already say? You’re fired.”

“F-fired?” Grandpa Jiang froze in shock. “But Manager Zhang, you clearly said—if I wiped your shoes clean, I could keep my job.”

“Did I?” Zhang Lei raised his brows in mock confusion. “I don’t recall saying that.”

“I heard it!” Li Qiang stepped forward. “I can testify!”

“And me too!” Ma Gui shouted. “We both heard it. Manager Zhang, this is bullying!”

Zhang Lei walked up to Grandpa Jiang, his eyes gleaming with scorn.
“Bullying? That’s right, I’m bullying you. What can you do about it?”

“Zhang Lei!” Ma Gui’s fists clenched, his temper exploding. “Don’t go too far!”

But Grandpa Jiang quickly blocked him. “Please, Manager Zhang, let’s talk calmly. What do you really want?”

“What do I want?” Zhang Lei sneered. “I’m just enforcing company policy. You’ve been dismissed. There’s nothing I can do. Now get out—stop wasting my time.”

Li Qiang snapped. “If you never intended to help Old Jiang, why make him wipe your shoes? You’re nothing but the company dog. What right do you have to trample people like this?”

At the word dog, Zhang Lei’s face darkened.
“Li Qiang, you’d better watch your mouth—or you can leave with him!”

“Fine!” Li Qiang ripped off his vest and threw it to the ground. “I’ve had enough!”

“And me too!” Ma Gui tore his vest off as well. “Zhang Lei, you bastard—you’ll get your retribution!”

Seeing both his brothers lose their jobs because of him, Grandpa Jiang’s heart clenched with guilt.
“Don’t! Old Ma, Old Li—don’t do something rash because of me!”

He rushed to Zhang Lei, pleading desperately.
“Manager Zhang, please, if you’re angry, take it out on me alone. They’re innocent. They were only joking. Please don’t hold it against them!”

Zhang Lei shoved him away in disgust. “Get lost! All of you. From this moment on, you’re all fired!”

Grandpa Jiang stumbled, nearly falling to the ground.

“Forget him, Old Jiang!” Li Qiang barked. “We don’t need to work under a man like this!”

They pulled him out of the building.

Outside, Grandpa Jiang’s eyes were full of guilt.
“Old Ma, Old Li, I’m so sorry. Because of me, you’ve lost your jobs.”

Finding work was already hard enough for young men—how much harder would it be for them, men in their fifties and sixties?

“What nonsense are you saying?” Li Qiang waved him off. “We quit on our own. It’s not your fault.”

“Exactly,” Ma Gui added. “I’ve long had enough of that scum Zhang Lei. He’s nothing, yet he orders us around every day like a king. Don’t worry, Old Jiang. Take a good rest today. Tomorrow, we’ll go out and find work together.”

“That’s right,” Li Qiang nodded. “We’ll go together.”

Hearing their loyalty, Grandpa Jiang’s eyes moistened. He smiled warmly.
“Old Ma, Old Li… since we’re all free tonight, don’t bother going home. Stay for dinner at my place.”

Both men shook their heads.

“Can’t. My grandson’s been begging me for a toy gun. School’s out soon, I promised I’d take him.” Li Qiang chuckled.

“And my wife just messaged me—her younger sister’s family is visiting.”

After they left, Zhang Lei pulled out his phone. His tone instantly shifted, groveling like a lapdog.

“Hello, Miss Zhang. Don’t worry, I’ve already dismissed Jiang Fuhai. Soon, they’ll have no choice but to pack up and leave A City.”

Indeed—

The mastermind behind all this was Zhang Shuyi.

She would never allow anyone to take Cheng Zijun away.

The first step to driving Jiang Ning out—was to cut off her financial support.

And since the Jiang family’s livelihood depended entirely on Grandpa Jiang’s janitorial job, once he lost it, how could Jiang Ning possibly remain in A City?

The answer was obvious.

She couldn’t.

“Well done,” Zhang Shuyi’s cold voice floated through the receiver. “Don’t worry, I’ll have Song Daqiang promote you.”

Song Daqiang—Zhang Lei’s direct superior.

“Thank you, Miss Zhang! Thank you!” Zhang Lei was ecstatic. “If you need me in the future, just say the word!”

After all, Zhang Shuyi was a wealthy heiress.

With her backing, his future was limitless.

Already, he could see his bright tomorrow.

…

That afternoon, Jiang Ning returned home around two-thirty.

Her mood was light, lips humming a cheerful tune—if one listened closely, they’d hear fragments of The Phoenix Hairpin from Peking Opera.

But as she opened the door, she was startled to see Grandpa Jiang inside, cleaning the living room.

“Grandpa? You have the day off today?”

Afraid of worrying her, Grandpa Jiang forced a smile.
“Ning Ning… I resigned.”

Her eyes widened. Then, to his surprise, she broke into a grin.
“Really? You finally thought it through?”

She had begged him countless times to quit.

But he had never listened.

Now, unexpectedly, he was saying it himself.

“What resigned!” A voice came sharply from the back room.

Zhou Jinpeng stepped out, face flushed with anger.
“Ning Ning, your grandfather was bullied out of his job!”

At once, Jiang Ning’s expression hardened. She strode to him.
“Grandpa Zhou, who bullied him? Tell me everything. Don’t you dare hide it from me.”

Grandpa Jiang’s face changed.
“Old Zhou, don’t talk nonsense!” He winked desperately, trying to silence his old friend.

But Zhou Jinpeng had already made a call earlier to Ma Gui and Li Qiang.

And from them, he had learned the truth.

So, despite Grandpa Jiang’s pleading, Zhou Jinpeng revealed everything.

As the story spilled out, Jiang Ning’s expression grew unreadable.

She finally turned to her grandfather, her voice calm but edged with steel.
“Grandpa… what’s the full name of your company?”
