After giving Shi Nanxing his medicine, Shi Nanyue immediately turned to comfort her mother.

“Mom, please don’t cry anymore. If Nanxing knew you were crying yourself to sleep every day, his heart wouldn’t be able to take it either.”

Madam Shi turned her head and looked at her daughter with tear-filled eyes.
“Xiaoyue… tell me… do you think your brother will ever wake up in this lifetime?”

Her gaze was filled with a fragile kind of hope.

“He will. He definitely will.” Shi Nanyue nodded firmly. “Mom, didn’t the doctors say it themselves? As long as the family doesn’t give up on Nanxing and we keep calling out to him, a miracle could happen at any time.”

A miracle…

Hearing that word again made Madam Shi feel something indescribable.

She wondered…

If miracles were so easy to come by—
Would they still be called miracles?

Over the years, she had consulted the best doctors, brought in top-tier international medical teams, and tried every method under the sun.

But…

Despite everything—no change.

Her eyes reddened once more.

She was getting older, year by year. She didn’t even know if she’d live long enough to see her precious granddaughter again.

Shi Nanyue sighed deeply.
“Mom… if I’d known things would turn out this way, I would’ve gotten into the car with Nanxing and Huashang that day. Maybe then, none of this would’ve happened. I’d rather be the one who died than watch Nanxing lying in that bed like this…”

“It’s all my fault, Mom. Everything that happened to Nanxing—it’s my fault…”

By the end, she had broken down completely, sobbing loudly.

And it was true.

That year, when Nanxing took his wife and infant daughter back to their hometown for the ancestral rites, Shi Nanyue and her husband Tang Gaoyi had also gone back with them.
But on the day of the accident, the couple had been delayed by some last-minute issue and didn’t get in the car.

And it was precisely because they didn’t, that they narrowly escaped the tragedy.

Watching her daughter crumble under guilt, Madam Shi immediately pulled her into a hug, her voice hoarse and shaky.
“Xiaoyue, this was your brother’s fate. How can you blame yourself? Don’t think like that… You’re all I have left now that your brother is like this…”

“Mom!” Shi Nanyue clung to her mother; voice choked with emotion.
“I swear I’ll find Shengbao for you! I will!”

“Good,” Madam Shi nodded firmly. “I believe in you. We’ll find her. We will.”

The two women held each other, sobbing uncontrollably.

A long while passed before Madam Shi finally calmed down.
She wiped her face and looked up at her daughter.
“Xiaoyue… you go ahead and take care of your things. I’d like to spend some time alone with your brother.”

“Alright, Mom.” Shi Nanyue nodded and quietly left the room.

Inside, Madam Shi took a towel and gently wiped Shi Nanxing’s face. As she did, she muttered softly,
“Mom is already in her sixties. Who knows how many more years I can hang on? Shengbao is our family’s only remaining hope. I’ll take good care of myself—wait for her to return—and inherit the family legacy!”

Inherit the family legacy?

Those last words made Shi Nanyue’s footsteps pause slightly outside the room.
But only for a moment—she quickly regained her composure.

In the main hall, Shi Nanyue gave the butler instructions to prepare some nourishing tonic for Madam Shi and bring it over later.

“Mom!”

Just then, a young woman entered through the front door.

She was dressed in a flowing white dress, long hair cascading down her shoulders, with a naturally elegant aura.

This was Tang An’an—Shi Nanyue’s daughter.

“You’re back, An’an.” Shi Nanyue quickly stepped forward to greet her.
“Have you been busy lately?”

Tang An’an smiled sweetly. “Not too bad. Has Dad returned from his business trip yet?”

“Not yet.”

“And Grandma?” An’an asked, glancing around. “She’s with Uncle again?”

“Mhm.” Shi Nanyue nodded.

Tang An’an’s eyes flickered with something unspoken.

Nineteen years.
And Grandma still held out hope for her uncle.

But really… how could a man in a vegetative state just wake up?

Sometimes, An’an truly didn’t understand.

Instead of placing all her hope on someone who might never wake up…
Wouldn’t it be better to cherish the people in front of her?

Shi Nanyue looked her daughter up and down, concern clouding her face.
“An’an, have you been working too hard lately? You’ve lost weight again. Are you skipping meals?”

The tenderness in her eyes was unmistakable.

Tang An’an patted her mother’s hand lightly. “It’s nothing, Mom. I’m young. Missing a few meals won’t kill me. Besides, everyone wants to be slim these days—saves me the trouble of dieting.”

Shi Nanyue frowned, just slightly.
“Your uncle is unconscious, and your grandma is getting older by the day. In the future, you will be the one to carry on the Shi family legacy and lead the Shi Corporation. If something happens to you—who will we depend on? Who will your grandma count on?”

That’s how deep a parent’s love runs—always thinking ahead.

Tang An’an was now the only descendant of the Shi family.

She was Madam Shi’s last visible hope.
And to her parents—a precious gem in the palm of their hands.

If anything were to happen to her, Shi Nanyue’s world would collapse.

But Tang An’an only smiled faintly.
“Mom, don’t say that. Grandma doesn’t only have me. She still has Shi Sheng.”

At this, she paused, then added with a slight edge to her voice,
“Besides, Shi Sheng is the real heir of the Shi family. What am I? In Grandma’s eyes, I’ll always be an outsider. Just a girl with a different surname.”

Tang An’an had always been somewhat displeased with Madam Shi’s behavior.

To her, it was blatant favoritism.

She was the one who had been by Madam Shi’s side all these years, being the dutiful granddaughter.

Yet Madam Shi kept obsessing over that girl who had never even shown her face—Shi Sheng—calling her “Shengbao” with such affection and longing!

Not once had Madam Shi ever called her “Bao.”

Even when she had scored first in her entire class, Madam Shi still addressed her only by name.

And now she was saying Shi Sheng was the rightful heir of the Shi Group?
But who had been working tirelessly at the company all these years?
Shi Sheng? She had contributed absolutely nothing!

If anyone deserved to inherit the Shi legacy—it should be her!

What right did Shi Sheng have to take the position that should have been hers?

Shi Nanyue glanced around cautiously and lowered her voice.
“To your grandma, Shi Sheng is nothing more than a memory. If she could’ve been found, they would’ve found her by now. Do you really think we’d still be waiting after all these years?”

Because if that child was still alive…

Then Si Huashang must be alive too.

But in all these years, there hadn’t been the slightest trace of Si Huashang.

Besides, in such a terrible accident, how could a three-month-old baby possibly have survived?

This whole thing was nothing more than Madam Shi lying to herself.

Which meant—

The only rightful heir of the Shi family… was her daughter, Tang An’an.

Tang An’an narrowed her eyes slightly.
“Mom… do you really think Shi Sheng can’t be found?”

Shi Nanyue looked around again, her tone even lower.
“She was only three months old when the accident happened. In the middle of nowhere, she was probably eaten by wolves or wild dogs long ago. How could she still be alive? I only tell your grandma she’s still out there to keep her spirits up. That’s all.”

Tang An’an’s voice was just as quiet.
“Even if Shi Sheng’s gone, what if Uncle wakes up one day? Then—”

She didn’t finish the sentence.
But her heart was full of unease.

She was afraid.
Afraid that what was supposed to be hers… might one day be taken away by someone else.

Shi Nanyue reached over and gently smoothed out the wrinkles in her daughter’s clothes.
“I hope your uncle wakes up too, but if he really could, would we still be waiting after all these years? You just focus on working hard at the company and prepare to take over. Stop overthinking.”

Tang An’an nodded.
“Okay, Mom. I’ll head back to my room now.”

“Go on.” Shi Nanyue nodded, watching her daughter leave.
“I’ll have Aunt Zhang bring some bird’s nest soup to your room later.”

As she watched An’an’s back disappear down the hallway, Shi Nanyue’s eyes were full of satisfaction.

Her daughter was not only beautiful, but incredibly capable.
Respected within the Shi Group, well-liked by the staff—she was undoubtedly the one most suited to take over the Shi family legacy.

…

Meanwhile…

In City A.

Lin Yuze had been waiting in the café for a long, long time.

So long that even the manager came over to remind him,
“Mr. Lin, it’s already past midnight.”

Startled, Lin Yuze pulled out his phone.

Only then did he realize just how late it had gotten.

“Did Miss Jiang ever show up?” he asked.

“No.” The manager shook his head.

Lin Yuze’s brows furrowed slightly.

So… Jiang Ning really wasn’t coming.

“Let me borrow your phone,” he said.

The manager blinked in surprise but still handed his phone over.

Lin Yuze took it and quickly dialed Jiang Ning’s number.

“Hello?”
Jiang Ning’s voice came through, a little hushed, probably because of the hour.

“It’s Lin Yuze.”

Her tone immediately turned cold.

“I’ve said everything I needed to say. Don’t call me again using different numbers just to harass me.”
Her voice was still quiet, but sharp.
“I’m not interested in fighting Zhang Shuyi over a pile of crap. Do me a favor and tell Cheng Zijun to spend less time admiring himself in the mirror.”

Click.

She hung up.

Lin Yuze stared at the disconnected call screen.

Yep. He was sure now.

Jiang Ning was done with Cheng Zijun.

She didn’t love him anymore.

With that realization, he forwarded the call recording to his own WeChat, then stood and left the café.

…

12:30 AM.

Lin Yuze arrived at Cheng Group’s CEO office.

Cheng Zijun was still inside, buried in paperwork.

Knock knock.

“Who is it?” came Cheng Zijun’s tired voice.

“It’s me. Yuze.”

Lin Yuze’s voice.

Cheng Zijun had been working so long, he’d almost forgotten—
He’d left Lin Yuze at the café to wait for Jiang Ning.

Now that he was here, he must’ve brought Jiang Ning along to apologize!

Thinking this, Cheng Zijun immediately set aside his documents and looked toward the door.
“Come in.”

Lin Yuze pushed the door open.

“Zijun-ge.”

Seeing him come in alone, Cheng Zijun’s brows knitted together.
“Where’s Jiang Ning?”

Could it be… she was too scared to face him and was waiting outside?

Yes.
She was probably too ashamed of herself, trembling by the doorway.

Cheng Zijun narrowed his eyes and glanced toward the door with a smirk.

“So now you’re scared? Hiding out there because you don’t dare face me?” he scoffed coldly.
“If you’re that scared, why did you do all those disgusting things in the first place?”
