After speaking, Jiang Ning turned and walked calmly into the café.

Behind her, Yun Haotian stared at her retreating figure with undisguised mockery.

Crazy.
She’s seriously lost it!

Did Jiang Ning really think she had the power to decide life and death with a single sentence?

So full of herself.
Shameless.
What a joke.

She thought she could fool him?

Impossible.

“Haotian.”

Just then, a well-dressed socialite carrying a six-figure luxury handbag walked up beside Yun Haotian. She glanced curiously in the direction Jiang Ning had disappeared and asked, “Who was that girl you were just talking to? Looked like a pretty young thing—your girlfriend?”

Yun Haotian immediately scoffed.
“Girlfriend? Please! That’s just some con artist. Tried to scam my uncle once, and now she’s trying to scam me too!”

This elegant woman was none other than Yun Haotian’s mother, Shen Jingshu—eldest daughter of the prestigious Shen family.

She was twenty years older than her younger brother, Shen Jingnian, and though she was already 49, her appearance was stunningly well-maintained—smooth skin, no crow’s feet, even when she smiled.

Standing next to Yun Haotian, they looked more like siblings than mother and son.

Now hearing that her beloved little brother had almost been scammed, she was stunned.

“Scammed? Your uncle? Are you serious?”

Her little brother had always been… different.
Brilliant since birth, he skipped grades throughout school—jumped straight into a top-tier combined bachelor-master-PhD program at fifteen, made waves in the business world by eighteen, and now, at just twenty-nine, he stood at the very peak of the industry.

Over the years, Shen Jingnian had never faltered—except when it came to relationships.

In every other field, he was the true definition of a prodigy.

So for someone to almost scam him? That was quite a story.

“Of course I’m serious! Mom, would I lie to you?”

Yun Haotian then dramatically retold the events of that day in the hospital elevator, when they had first met Jiang Ning.

But when he got to the part where the usually emotionally-stunted Shen Jingnian had stepped in to save a girl…

Shen Jingshu suddenly perked up with obvious curiosity.
“Wait wait wait—Haotian, was the girl… super pretty?”

Yun Haotian paused, then grumbled, “I mean… yeah, she’s definitely pretty.”

He might not like Jiang Ning’s methods, but even he couldn’t deny it—she was stunning. The kind of beauty that could make heads turn all across City A. You’d be hard-pressed to find another like her.

As a mother, Shen Jingshu knew her son’s high standards—and if even he said a girl was beautiful, then that girl must look like something out of a dream.

Her eyes sparkled with gossip as she narrowed them playfully.
“So… do you think your uncle might be interested in her?”

Yun Haotian cut her off immediately, rolling his eyes.
“Mom, come on! What are you thinking? That girl might have a nice face, but there’s nothing else about her that’s worthy of my uncle. She’s a scammer. Through and through.”

He continued to explain everything—how Jiang Ning had claimed Shen Jingnian was suffering from a condition that would cause him to collapse in three days if he didn’t take her prescription.

Hearing this, Shen Jingshu’s playful expression disappeared, replaced by a frown.

“Wait—what day is it today?” she asked, a trace of worry in her voice.

“Today is exactly the third day,” Yun Haotian replied, guessing what his mother was thinking.
“But don’t worry! Uncle’s fine. Seriously. Fit as ever—he could probably knock out a bull with one punch. That girl’s nonsense about collapsing is just that—nonsense.”

He had just met with Shen Jingnian earlier that morning and had even asked about his health out of curiosity.

Not only had his uncle shown zero symptoms, he’d even been in the gym lifting weights.

But Shen Jingshu wasn’t so easily convinced.

“The day isn’t over yet,” she said with a scowl. “Didn’t that girl say he’d collapse before 9 p.m.? What if she’s telling the truth? Haotian, this isn’t something to joke about. Where is she now? Take me to her. Now.”

After all, Shen Jingshu wasn’t some sheltered socialite—she’d been through the ups and downs of high society and business warfare. She had experience. She’d walked more bridges than Yun Haotian had taken steps.

And that experience told her one thing, you can’t judge people by their age—or their appearance.

Some people, no matter how young, were not to be underestimated.

And at this moment, all she could think about is, What if that girl was right?

If something did happen to her brother Shen Jingnian…

Their mother was already old and frail.

Their father had passed a few years back.

If Shen Jingnian collapsed now—
…it would be no different than delivering a fatal blow to their family.

Shen Jingshu was determined to find Jiang Ning and get to the bottom of things—as soon as possible.

“Mom, what are you even saying?” Yun Haotian sighed, exasperated. “Uncle and I already took her prescription to a doctor. They said he was fine—just had a bit of excessive internal heat.”

“And which doctor did you see?” Shen Jingshu asked sharply.

“Lin Fuhua—Miracle Doctor Lin,” Yun Haotian replied confidently.

At the mention of Lin Fuhua, Shen Jingshu finally seemed to relax a little.
“Oh, it was Miracle Doctor Lin?”

Lin Fuhua was a well-known figure in A City, one of the most reputable traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in the entire country. He had successfully treated countless difficult cases and was highly respected in elite social circles.

Shen Jingshu had heard his name many times from other wealthy women.

“Haotian, you’re sure you went to that Lin Fuhua?” she pressed again.

Yun Haotian nodded and pulled up the appointment record on his phone.
“Look, Mom. This should put your mind at ease, right?”

And yet… even staring at the confirmation, Shen Jingshu still couldn’t shake off a gnawing sense of unease. Her brows creased, her eyes filled with worry.

It felt like something big was about to happen.

Seeing her like this, Yun Haotian patted her shoulder and sighed, “Mom, you and Uncle really are the same—always so gullible. Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true. Are you saying Miracle Doctor Lin isn’t as trustworthy as some teenage girl with no credentials?”

If he hadn’t stepped in, Shen Jingnian would have already taken that shady prescription.

As the two spoke, they arrived at the entrance of City.Super, a high-end supermarket.

Suddenly, Shen Jingshu tugged at her son’s arm.

“Haotian, wait.”

“What is it, Mom?” Yun Haotian turned back.

“We’re going in to pick up a few things, then heading straight to your uncle’s place,” she said firmly. “If something really does happen tonight and he’s all alone, it could be dangerous.”

Shen Jingnian liked his peace and quiet.
Aside from staying at the family estate twice a month, he usually lived alone.
Even his cleaners came only on a schedule—he didn’t keep live-in staff.

If something went wrong…

There wouldn’t even be anyone to call an ambulance.

Yun Haotian looked helpless. “Mom, come on. That girl is just a lying scammer. Uncle’s not going to faint or collapse. Why do you need to go there in person? And didn’t you have a mahjong game with Mrs. Zhao tonight?”

“What’s more important, mahjong or your uncle?” Shen Jingshu rolled her eyes. “He’s my blood brother! We’re connected. I’ve had this terrible feeling all day. Something’s going to happen tonight. I have to go check on him.”

Some things… once they happen, there’s no going back.

Shen Jingshu had always been a cautious person.
She refused to do anything she might regret later.

And really, it wasn’t that hard to go see her brother. Mahjong could wait.

Knowing how stubborn his mother was, Yun Haotian didn’t bother arguing. Once she made up her mind, not even ten oxen could drag her back.

“Fine, fine,” he muttered. “If you’re dead set on wasting time, I’ll come with you.”

In City.Super, Shen Jingshu carefully picked out fresh fruit, vegetables, and premium meats.

Thirty minutes later, they arrived at Shen Jingnian’s private residence—a luxury standalone apartment in the heart of A City’s most expensive district.

Land here was worth more than gold.
Only the ultra-rich could afford to live in this neighborhood.

Yun Haotian rang the doorbell.

Once.
Twice.

Still, no answer.

He frowned.
“That’s weird. Is Uncle not home?”

A sudden, cold feeling crept over Shen Jingshu. She turned to her son, voice tight with panic.
“Haotian… do you think something actually happened to your uncle?”

“Of course not,” he waved it off. “Mom, don’t scare yourself. I’ll just call him.”

“Okay.” She nodded quickly.

Yun Haotian took out his phone and dialed.

Brrrr… Brrrr… Brrrr…

But no one picked up.

This time, Shen Jingshu really started to panic.

Her face went pale, and her voice trembled.

“He’s not answering the door.
He’s not picking up the phone.
Your uncle must have fainted—just like that girl said!”

“Quick! Call 120! Call an ambulance!!”
