He Sufang was a very practical woman.

Back when Jiang Ning was the young madam of the Cheng family, of course she went out of her way to curry favor with her—never daring to say a word that might offend.

But now?

Now that Jiang Ning had divorced Cheng Zijun, what was the point of pretending?

She, He Sufang, was a proper city woman, after all!

Why should she humble herself before some village bumpkin like Jiang Ning?

That’s why—

Her way of addressing Jiang Ning had shifted—from the affectionate “Ning Ning” to the cold and distant “her.”

What was there to fear?

A divorced woman, tossed out like trash.

What could she possibly do now? Marry into another powerful family?

Ha!
Absolutely impossible.

Someone like Jiang Ning was lucky enough to marry rich once—it was probably the result of some good karma from her last life.

Grandpa Jiang hadn’t expected his daughter-in-law’s attitude to be this callous.
He was momentarily stunned, then tried to defend his granddaughter.
“Who said Ning Ning isn’t the studying type? Every time she took exams, she ranked top ten! Even the teachers say she has a solid shot at a top-tier university.”

If she hadn’t made that rash decision to pause school and marry, she’d already be enrolled in one of the best colleges in the country.

As her grandfather, Grandpa Jiang had complete faith in her.

“Who knows if she didn’t cheat?” He Sufang crossed her arms, face full of disdain, tone sharp as a knife.
“And she wants to get into First High School? What a joke.”

First High?

Even He Suosuo hadn’t gotten in with her own abilities—they had to pull strings, call in favors, beg people just to squeeze her in.

And Jiang Ning wanted to get in easily?

In her dreams.

Grandpa Jiang’s expression darkened. He picked up on the meaning behind her words.

“Sufang,” he asked, brows furrowed, “Are you saying… you don’t want Ning Ning staying at your place?”

He Sufang rolled her eyes.

About damn time the old man figured it out.

“Dad, I think I’ve made myself pretty clear,” she said flatly.
“Do you really want me to spell it out? We’re a family of five living comfortably—if someone suddenly drops in, wouldn’t you find it inconvenient?”

Grandpa Jiang hadn’t come here today to argue with his daughter-in-law.

All he wanted was for Jiang Ning to have a good environment to study and a better future.
So even knowing her stance, he still tried to reason with her.

“Sufang… Ning Ning’s not an outsider…”

“Not an outsider?” He Sufang immediately cut him off, voice aggressive.
“Does she have blood ties to our Dongsheng? Is she related to our Suosuo?”

Grandpa Jiang paused—he had no response.

Strictly speaking, no, Jiang Ning wasn’t related to them by blood.

“Since she’s not blood, then she is an outsider!” He Sufang snapped.
“Dad, if you want to take in strays, that’s your business. But don’t try to dump her on us. This house isn’t some kind of garbage bin.”

In He Sufang’s mind, both Grandpa Jiang and Jiang Ning were trash.

Actually—less than trash.

At least trash stayed in its bin. These two couldn’t even recognize their place.

Especially Jiang Ning.

She’d already been kicked out of the Cheng family, and now she had the audacity to show her face here?

Second-hand goods.
What nerve.

“You—you’re calling us trash?” Grandpa Jiang’s eyes were wide with disbelief.

“Whoever is trash knows it in their heart,” He Sufang scoffed.
“You think I’m a pushover? Always showing up here trying to take advantage! If she has no place to stay, let her go wander the streets. What do you think this is, a charity? You want to leech off us? Not happening!”

Grandpa Jiang took a deep breath.

He was still her father-in-law, and he really didn’t want to get into an all-out fight with her.

So he turned to his son.
“Dongsheng, say something! You’re really okay with not letting Ning Ning stay?”

Jiang Dongsheng avoided his gaze and mumbled, “Dad, you—you know how it is. In our house… Sufang makes the decisions.”

Grandpa Jiang’s chest heaved in anger.

“Dongsheng,” he said, voice trembling, “Tell me, does your conscience not hurt? Can you really justify this?”

“Don’t forget—the only reason you’re living in this house is because of Ning Ning!”

“If it weren’t for her, your whole family would still be crammed into that 70-square-meter dump!”

“She’s only asking to stay here temporarily, and you say no? This is how you act as her uncle?”

“I worked my fingers to the bone to raise you, paid for your schooling year after year—was it all for nothing?!”

He was shaking now, almost unable to stand.

His wife had passed away early. He had raised Jiang Dongsheng all on his own, sacrificing food, clothes—everything—to get him through school.

And this was how he was repaid?

Jiang Dongsheng looked at his now-aging father—his hair starting to grey—and then glanced at his wife. His lips parted as if to speak… but in the end, he said nothing.

He Sufang snorted coldly, “What do you mean we got this house because of Jiang Ning? You raised her for years—that’s a debt she owes us!”

If not for Dongsheng, Jiang Ning would’ve died long ago!

Hearing this, Grandpa Jiang stared at her in shock, trembling with anger.
“Ning Ning was raised by me. Even I’ve never said she owes me anything. What gives you the right to say that?”

He Sufang gave a cold laugh.

“You’re Dongsheng’s father. When other people’s sons get married, their parents help buy the wedding home. When Dongsheng and I got married, where was your help? Did you prepare anything? You couldn’t even cough up a 10,000-yuan dowry!”

“Do you even deserve to call yourself a father?”

“You raised Jiang Ning? Then everything she owes you, she owes us too! Isn’t that fair?”

She twisted the truth with such shameless confidence, it almost sounded reasonable.

Jiang Dongsheng thought she made a good point.

These days, when young couples get married, whose parents don’t help buy a new home?

So—

That’s why Jiang Dongsheng believed his father owed him.

And if he owed him, it wasn’t wrong for Jiang Ning to be the one paying it back.

“That’s right!” He Sufang chimed in confidently. “Dad, this is what you owe us! Since you raised Dongsheng, it’s your job to take care of him!”

“Very good,” Grandpa Jiang laughed bitterly through his rage.
“Jiang Dongsheng—you’re really something. I’m still able-bodied now, and you already treat me like this. When I can’t even move someday, what then? Are you just going to leave me to die without a glance?”

He Sufang sneered, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Don’t you still have Jiang Ning? She’s going to college, right? She’ll have a big future! When you get old and can’t move, your precious little granddaughter will surely take care of you!”

She crossed her arms.
“And let’s not forget—Dongsheng married into our family. Since he’s part of the He family now, he has nothing to do with the Jiang family anymore. If he has any responsibility, it’s to support my parents, not you!”

He Sufang had zero intention of taking care of the old man.

There were words she had been holding back for years.
She only tolerated it all because Jiang Ning had married into the prestigious Cheng family, and she hoped to ride that wave.

But now?

Things were different. Jiang Ning was worthless. And it was time to speak her mind.

Jiang Dongsheng nodded along.
“Dad, you agreed to me marrying into the He family, so you should’ve considered the consequences. A son who marries into another family no longer belongs to his birth family. Asking me to support you? That’s not my duty.”

“Besides, didn’t you raise Jiang Ning? You raised her—let her take care of you. What do you expect from me?”

Grandpa Jiang’s heart felt like it was plunged into ice.

All these years, he had told himself Dongsheng was just lacking status in the He family. That’s why he rarely visited, even during hardships—he didn’t want to burden him.

But now, the truth was plain.

It wasn’t about status. Dongsheng had no conscience.

After a long silence, Grandpa Jiang sighed.
For the sake of Jiang Ning’s future, he forced himself to swallow his anger.

“Dongsheng… I’ve never asked you for anything in all these years. Just this once, I’m begging you. Ning Ning helped you get this big house, didn’t she? Can’t you help her just this once, for that?”

He would do anything, endure anything, if it meant Jiang Ning could continue her studies.

But before Jiang Dongsheng could answer, Jiang Ning’s voice rang out, calm and powerful:

“Grandpa, you don’t have to beg him.”

She stepped forward, expression composed.
“Grandpa, I’ll take care of you in your old age.”

“I’ll get into First High on my own, and I’ll buy my own school district apartment. Let’s go home.”

He Sufang and Jiang Dongsheng both snorted.

First High?
Buying a school district home?

She really dared to dream big!

Grandpa Jiang turned again to his son, his gaze heavy with disappointment.
“Dongsheng… you’re really not going to help?”

“Dad, I’m part of the He family now! I have no ties to the Jiang family. It’s not that I don’t want to help—it’s that I can’t.”

He sounded utterly cold, like he was talking about a stranger.

He knew full well: both his father and Jiang Ning were black holes. If he gave in now, they’d never stop coming back for more.

He had to cut them off—cleanly.

“Fine! Fine! What a proud son of the He family!” Grandpa Jiang trembled with rage, pointing at his son.
“Jiang Dongsheng, from this moment forward—we’re no longer father and son!”

Jiang Dongsheng froze.
He hadn’t expected his father to actually say it.

Something twisted in his chest, a strange and unfamiliar feeling.

Yes, they’d never been close…
But still—they were father and son by blood.

Even Jiang Ning looked a little surprised.

She turned to look at Grandpa Jiang.
The old man, well past sixty, stood tall and unyielding like a tree in a storm—battered, weathered, but still upright, his eyes unwavering.

He Sufang burst into laughter when she heard those words.

Perfect.

Jiang Ning was now nothing but worthless baggage. The old man was no longer useful either.

She couldn’t wait to cut ties with them both and avoid being dragged down in the future.

“Then so be it! What, you think we’re scared?” she sneered.
“Dongsheng having you as a father makes no difference—it’s like you never existed anyway!”

Her words gave Jiang Dongsheng newfound confidence.
She was right. Having a father like this did nothing for him—just added more problems to his life.

And now they even wanted to throw Jiang Ning into their house?

If he didn’t break ties now, they might come back later demanding ownership of the house.

Cutting ties was the smart move.

“The longer you drag it out, the more trouble it brings,” he muttered.

He stepped forward, eyes meeting Grandpa Jiang’s coldly.
“Since you’ve already said the words, there’s nothing more to talk about.”

“From this day on, I live as a He, and I’ll die as a ghost of the He family! Even in death, I won’t be listed in the Jiang family’s ancestral records!”

“We’re strangers now. Let’s never cross paths again.”

Grandpa Jiang had hoped that saying such harsh words would shake some sense into his son—that Dongsheng might hesitate… maybe even change his mind.

But instead—

Dongsheng was happy to be rid of him.

That was the son he had poured his life into raising.

How pathetic.
How ridiculous.

His legs faltered slightly. Jiang Ning stepped forward to support him, steadying his arm. Her gaze turned cold and sharp as a blade as she looked at Jiang Dongsheng.

“You cut ties with Grandpa today… You’ll regret it.”

Regret?

Jiang Dongsheng sneered.
She was taking herself way too seriously.

He Sufang gave Jiang Ning a mocking side glance.
“Cutting ties with hillbillies like you? We’re thrilled, not sorry. You think you’re some prize? Don’t make me laugh!”

Jiang Ning nodded slowly.
“Since that’s how you feel, let’s sign an official agreement—cutting all ties.”

“That way, when certain people come crawling back to beg Grandpa for help later…”
“They won’t have the chance to act shameless.”
