He Suosuo grew increasingly smug.

Worried that Jiang Ning hadn’t seen her waving to Zhang He just now, she raised her hand again and waved, calling out, “Cousin, I’ll come find you tonight!”

Though busy with her work, Zhang He’s relaxed management style meant she still lifted a hand in return. “Okay, Suosuo.”

After greeting Zhang He, He Suosuo glanced at Jiang Ning.

Hmph!

Little village girl!

Still trying to compete with her.

With Jiang Ning’s humble, second-hand background, she’d never have the slightest connection to the Si family.

Jiang Ning hadn’t even paid He Suosuo the slightest attention. She hadn’t noticed that He Suosuo was there at all.

Her gaze had been fixed on Si Huawu in the crowd, completely absorbed, almost in a daze.

Even Jiang Ning herself hadn’t realized it.

It wasn’t until Yue Qianlan spoke, “Ningning, what are you looking at?”

Jiang Ning snapped back to reality. “I feel like I’ve seen this person somewhere before.”

“Do you mean Second Master Si?” Yue Qianlan asked. “The middle-aged man walking in the center, with the commanding presence?”

“Yes,” Jiang Ning nodded slightly.

Yue Qianlan smiled. “Second Master Si is the head of Starlight Entertainment. He appears often in entertainment news—so it’s normal if you’ve seen him before.”

“I see,” Jiang Ning said, smiling. “Then I probably saw him on TV.”

Yue Qianlan linked arms with Jiang Ning and continued, explaining, “The Si matriarch and patriarch had eight sons and one daughter, all outstanding in their respective fields. The Si family dominates Xiangjiang—it’s terrifying! I’ve heard my dad talk about the Si family a lot.”

That was why Yue Qianlan knew so much about the Si family.

Jiang Ning nodded slightly. “Having so many children, and all successful… the Si matriarch must have had a happy later life.”

As people age, they generally hope for two things:
First, health and peace.
Second, children and grandchildren around them.

In these two aspects, the Si matriarch had been blessed.

Yue Qianlan shook her head. “Nothing in this world is perfect.”

“Why?” Jiang Ning asked, curious.

Normally, Jiang Ning wouldn’t pry into others’ affairs. But today felt different.

She was inexplicably curious about the Si family, especially after seeing Si Huawu.

“Let’s walk as I tell you,” Yue Qianlan said, still holding Jiang Ning’s arm. They still had luggage to collect.

“Okay,” Jiang Ning replied, following her.

Yue Qianlan’s voice lowered as she spoke, “Originally, the matriarch was happy, but nineteen years ago, a car accident took her only daughter, Si Huashang. In that accident, not only did the matriarch lose her daughter, but also her three-month-old granddaughter, Shi Sheng. The only surviving son-in-law, Shi Nanxing, has been left in a vegetative state ever since.”

There are three sorrows in life: losing a father in youth, losing a spouse in middle age, losing a child in old age.

The Si matriarch had suffered the last of the three. How could her later years be peaceful?

Yue Qianlan sighed. “The car plunged off a cliff, so no one found Si Huashang or Shi Sheng immediately. They were lost without a trace. Over the years, both the Si and Shi families held onto hope, thinking they might still be alive, which is why they’ve never stopped searching.”

“Compared to the Si matriarch, the Shi matriarch’s situation was worse. She had only two children, Shi Nanyue and Shi Nanxing. After the tragedy, she cried every day and bore the burden of the Shi Corporation. Her health has deteriorated over the years. If she passes… it’s unlikely Shi Nanxing will survive long either.”

Although Shi Nanyue was his elder sister, her care could never replace a mother’s. A vegetative person was inherently fragile.

Hearing this, Jiang Ning felt a pang of sorrow. “So both matriarchs are unfortunate, already at the age for peaceful retirement, yet burdened with unimaginable grief.”

There’s a saying: life worse than death.

For these two women, it was the truest embodiment of that phrase.

Jiang Ning added, “I hope both matriarchs can one day reunite with their loved ones.”

Though she didn’t know them personally, her blessing was sincere.

Yue Qianlan looked up at Jiang Ning. “Do you think Si Huashang and Shi Sheng are still alive?”

“I don’t know,” Jiang Ning shook her head. “But miracles do happen, right?”

Yue Qianlan frowned. “I hope they are. But the odds are slim. The driver’s head was crushed… Si Huashang might have survived, but Shi Sheng was only three months old. I fear… she didn’t make it.”

Not just Yue Qianlan thought this. Nearly everyone assumed the same.

Then she seemed to recall something. “However, I heard the Si family hired a master to divine the child’s fate. He said Shi Sheng has the destiny of a phoenix. Even though Si Huashang’s whereabouts remain unknown, Shi Sheng is destined to live.”

“Which is why, even after all these years, both families have persisted in searching. The phoenix can rise from the ashes!”

Xiangjiang people are superstitious, believing in feng shui and fate.

“Because Shi Sheng has a phoenix destiny, and is the only granddaughter of the Si matriarch, the three-month-old baby was doted on by her grandmother and all eight uncles and aunts. Thirteen capable cousins protected her. In Xiangjiang, no one dared touch her. In Beijing, she could walk unchallenged.”

At the same time, Si Huawu felt a gaze on him from the crowd.

A strange, almost instinctive feeling of unbreakable connection—something he had never experienced before.

“Qiqi, wait.”

Si Huawu called out to his wife, pausing, and looked toward the crowd.
