Chapter 8: Rosetta’s Expedition for Essentials 2

After finishing bathing and having a meal, we got into the carriage.

The bath was really spacious. It even had a Marlion from the mouth of a lion-like stone statue.

As a bonus, Lionetta took off my clothes, and another maid washed my body thoroughly. She was a maid exclusively dedicated to baths. It’s luxurious, isn’t it? Even among women, it’s embarrassing. What if the forbidden door is opened?

If I don’t wash alone, it’s a crisis of chastity. I don’t know whose crisis of chastity it is, but it is a crisis of chastity. So I have to take a bath alone.

The number of escorts had increased to two.

One person acts as the coachman, and the other guards inside.

Therefore, in this unnecessarily luxurious carriage, there’s me, Lionetta, and my father’s guards riding alone.

It feels cramped somehow. And the soldiers are so macho and sweaty from their morning training.

The inside of the carriage is also sweaty. The scent of men fills the air. How can Ri-onetta keep such a composed face? Does she like it? The scent of old men?

It’s shaking gently for a while.

The wheels are wooden, and there’s no cushion. It rattles when it hits a pebble.

My butt hurts after just a few minutes. This is no good, carriages are no good.

At least give us some suspension, rubber tires, and a safe ride.

It’s said to be well-made because it’s a noble’s carriage. But it shakes a lot. It’s bouncing up and down. That’s why my butt hurts.

The soldier guy is wearing metal armor and doesn’t seem to be in pain at all. He’s capable. I couldn’t help but admire him.

You’re doing great, uncle. I’m sure you’re the best at riding carriages.

The first place we arrived at was a clothing store for commoners.

I wanted clothes that were easy to move in.

I came here after explaining to the soldiers in the carriage where I wanted to go.

Is it okay for nobles to come to the commoner district?

The shopkeeper seems really flustered, you know? It’s not okay.

It’s like they’re on the verge of a breakdown, like they might get beaten up at any moment.

The kind of fear you have when you’re about to be rudely attacked?

It’s okay, I’m not a bad villainess, you know?

“Um, may I help you with something at our store?”

“I want clothes that are easy to move in. Do you have any?”

“Um, well, clothes that would suit a noble young lady like yourself are not really available at my shop…”

The chubby guy with a blue face is saying this while nervously rubbing his hands? His legs are trembling like jelly. He’s sweating buckets?

This is clearly obstruction of business.

It seems that nobles just coming here obstructs the business of commoner clothing stores. Why, I wonder?

“I’m not looking for fancy clothes. I just need something suitable for exercising. Of course, commoner clothes will do.”

“Y-Yes, of course!!”

The chubby store manager, who seemed to freeze in place at my words, hurriedly went to look for clothes.

The store manager returned to the counter with some clothes. Am I imagining it, or did he lose some weight?

It must be my imagination, right? He couldn’t have lost weight in just a moment like that.

If it’s not my imagination, women will flock to him like crazy.

Girls who want to diet will come swarming. It’s a full house! Well done, buddy.

That diet method is full of dreams and hope. His belly is filled with meat and fat. Just being stared at by me is enough to make him slim down.

How should I go about dieting?

For now, let’s take a look at the clothes the guy brought.

Hmm, compared to what I’m wearing now, it’s kind of meh. It’s ridiculously thin, and even though it’s new, it looks ragged.

How did it end up like this?

Is this what normal commoner clothes look like?

“Well, is this what normal commoners wear?”

“Uh, w-well, that’s…”

“Huh? Why are you being evasive?”

“S-Sorry, um, these are for middle-class merchants, the commoner clothes are over here!!”

It’s too shabby. And then, even shabbier ones came out? These are like clothes you wouldn’t even find at a 100 yen shop in Japan. But I’ve never seen clothes at a 100 yen shop.

If I had to describe commoner clothes, they’d be like clothes made of cardboard or newspaper. They’re already a bit torn.

This is quite surprising. It’s even lower than my expectations.

“So this is what commoner clothes are like now.”

“Y-Yes!”

“Miss, um, these clothes are… not really suitable for a young lady like yourself…”

“That’s true… Are there any sturdier and less conspicuous clothes I could wear while walking around town?”

“W-Well, if it’s adventurer’s clothing, you’ll need some defense, so it would be these.”

Ah, this is it. I wanted this kind of shorts and button-up shirt-like clothing.

Even though it doesn’t have buttons. It seems they use sticks instead of round buttons.

They seem to use these to function as buttons. There are no actual buttons. They probably don’t exist in this world, and it seems like quite a revolutionary idea. I do miss four-hole buttons, not that I’m actively seeking them out.

In other words, this is adventurer’s clothing.

It’s the initial equipment for adventurers. Since I’ve come this far, should I go register as an adventurer too? But I should probably hold off since my skills are still lacking.

I’ll wait until I can move better and build up some strength. It’s better to learn magic first too, right?

“Next is the blacksmith’s. Let’s go.”

With Lionetta, I got back into the carriage once again.

It’s strange, though. The merchant was spreading salt after we left.

Isn’t it odd? The daughter of a duke came all the way here to shop, right? She’s a noble, isn’t she? Even if they wrote “Preferred by Nobles” it’s just laying the groundwork for a full house, isn’t it?

Spreading salt like saying “Don’t come back again” isn’t that harsh? It’s like pickling, isn’t it? They wouldn’t do that even in Kyoto, I’m sure.
