Chapter 4: The Shameless Pair

Sheng Yuan restrained himself over and over, finally lowering his hand.

The girl immediately pressed close to him again from the side.

Her voice still carried a slight tremble as she spoke.

“Mingzhu? Are you Mr. Sheng’s wife?”

Without waiting for Mingzhu’s response, she indignantly raised her voice: “Why would you treat Mr. Sheng like this?”

The air seemed to freeze at that moment.

No one paid her any attention.

“You want to hit me?”

She repeated the question again.

Mingzhu looked into Sheng Yuan’s bottomless eyes, feeling a sour ache spreading through her chest and an inexplicable sense of grievance.

Yet she refused to show weakness, stubbornly meeting Sheng Yuan’s gaze.

Hearing the girl’s words,

Mingzhu suddenly laughed, stunningly beautiful for a moment, “I almost forgot about you.”

Before the words faded, she raised her hand to slap the girl’s face.

Things were really getting worse year by year – now someone actually dared to openly compete with her for a man.

After all, she and Sheng Yuan weren’t divorced yet.

What business did this woman have interfering in matters between husband and wife?

She had endured enough grievances these past few days.

She couldn’t let just anyone walk all over her.

Before her palm could land on the girl’s face,

“Enough!”

Sheng Yuan grabbed Mingzhu’s wrist, his grip so strong it made her bones ache.

Rage surged in his eyes, his voice icy cold: “Haven’t you caused enough trouble?”

“I’m causing trouble?”

Mingzhu struggled briefly, but he only tightened his grip.

Excruciating pain shot through her wrist, yet she lifted her chin defiantly.

“Do I need to repeat what you two were doing?”

The wrist in his hand was slender, as if it would break with a little more pressure.

Seeing the reddened corners of Mingzhu’s eyes, Sheng Yuan felt an unexpected softening in his heart.

But remembering her earlier behavior, his anger flared up again.

“What shameful thing have we done? Hmm?”

It was a normal social distance – neither crossing boundaries nor being ambiguous.

He truly couldn’t understand Mingzhu’s thought process at all.

“I don’t want to repeat myself, don’t you understand?”

As the pain in her wrist intensified, the corners of Mingzhu’s eyes had turned completely crimson.

Sheng Yuan looked at her reddened eyes.

This was what he found most incomprehensible about Mingzhu.

Always, always like this.

Never considering anyone else’s feelings.

Only caring about whether she was happy or not.

If she was unhappy, she would make everyone else unhappy.

These past couple days, he had actually thought Mingzhu had changed.

Turns out she was still as willful and domineering as before.

“Get lost.”

Her hand was thrown aside violently, making her high heels unsteady.

Mingzhu staggered before regaining her balance.

“You’re telling me to get lost?”

These were the harshest words anyone had ever spoken to Mingzhu since she could remember.

“Then who do you want to get lost?”

The merciless words spilled from Sheng Yuan’s lips.

In front of an outsider, he hadn’t spared Mingzhu any dignity.

Mingzhu rubbed her wrist, the pain gradually subsiding slightly.

Pushing up her sleeve revealed faint red bruises on her fair, delicate skin.

Sheng Yuan’s pupils contracted, instinctively stepping forward, but the girl behind him tugged at his clothes.

Mingzhu looked at the bruises on her wrist.

Sheng Yuan couldn’t see her expression clearly and was about to speak again

when he saw Mingzhu pull her sleeve back down to cover the bruises.

Unlike before, when she would seek comfort for the slightest injury.

Sheng Yuan felt a tightness in his chest.

“Hmph.”

Mingzhu cast a contemptuous glance at the girl cowering behind Sheng Yuan.

“Shameless pair.” After saying that, she didn’t even want to spare them another glance.

She casually threw the thermal container in her hand at Sheng Yuan’s face.

Then turned and left the office.

Sheng Yuan raised his arm to block it, feeling a sharp pain in his forearm – Mingzhu hadn’t held back at all.

His first instinct was to chase after her, but he was held back by the soup dripping all over him.

The girl was still diligently wiping him clean.

Yet Sheng Yuan only felt increasingly irritated.

He watched until Mingzhu’s figure disappeared around the corner.

“Mr. Sheng, Mr. Sheng, are you alright?”

The girl’s voice trembled slightly, as if frightened, her wiping motions slow and gentle.

“I’m fine.”

Sheng Yuan rubbed his temples with a headache and stopped the girl’s ministrations.

He casually took off his suit jacket, the damp white shirt revealing faint outlines of pale muscles beneath.

His wet hair made his sharp features appear even more defined.

What Sheng Yuan didn’t see as he stood up

Was the undisguised adoration in the girl’s eyes.

“Excuse me.”

Sheng Yuan walked into the lounge, which contained a bathroom and change of clothes.

The continuously dripping oil and greasy sensation made him extremely uncomfortable.

After showering, Sheng Yuan’s anger had subsided.

After all, Mingzhu had been spoiled since childhood – her willfulness was to be expected.

That she dared to pour soup on his head was also a result of his own indulgence.

Forgetting their anniversary two days ago was indeed his fault.

And then there were the bruises on Mingzhu’s arms.

He had been too heavy-handed in his anger.

He doubted Mingzhu would apply medicine to them herself after returning home.

After freshening up, Sheng Yuan emerged from the lounge.

The girl was still sitting obediently on the sofa.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Sheng Yuan come out, her voice sickeningly sweet.

“Mr. Sheng.”

Sheng Yuan responded indifferently, having no interest in hearing more from the girl.

He returned to his desk and began handling documents.

“Mr. Sheng, thank you so much for your sponsorship. I will definitely study harder.”

“I will repay you.”

Sheng Yuan paid no mind.

He didn’t need any repayment, but nodded anyway to encourage the girl.

The main reason he sponsored her

Was simply because she bore some resemblance to Mingzhu in her youth.

Seeing Sheng Yuan’s indifferent response, the girl grew somewhat discontented and spoke with feigned innocence.

“Mr. Sheng… Miss Ming was really frightening earlier.”

Sheng Yuan paused while flipping through documents, his sharp gaze turning to the girl, though he didn’t refute her.

Mingzhu had indeed gone too far just now, showing no consideration for anyone’s dignity.

But this was simply Mingzhu’s nature.

Not gentle, spoiled, domineering – these traits were long established.

Sheng Yuan had known this from the beginning.

Decades had passed without the slightest change.

Even though everyone knew what Mingzhu was like,

Hearing it from someone else’s mouth felt strangely uncomfortable.

Making his throat constrict with indescribable discomfort.

Seeing that Sheng Yuan didn’t refute her, the girl spoke with pretended grievance.

“Miss Ming went too far. You were only doing a good deed, yet she doesn’t trust you at all.”

Sheng Yuan pressed his lips together tightly. He and Mingzhu had been married for ten years.

Before their marriage, he had pursued Mingzhu for nearly two years.

In their twelve years of entanglement,

It could be said he had been giving unilaterally the entire time.

Treating Mingzhu as if she would melt in his mouth, afraid she would fall from his hands.

Yet Mingzhu never considered their years of feelings.

Nor did she ever care about his sentiments.

“Miss Ming showed you no respect in public, actually pouring soup over your head.”

“How could she treat you like that?” Yang Tian grew increasingly impassioned as she spoke.

“My mother says, a wife who truly loves her husband will always give him face in front of others…”

Sheng Yuan narrowed his eyes slightly, his gaze fixed on the girl’s chattering lips.

Such an obvious and clumsy attempt to sow discord.

He would be a fool not to see through it.

However, what she said wasn’t entirely wrong.

Mingzhu had indeed been spoiled to the point of lawlessness.

“Yang Tian.”

Yang Tian paused and looked over with delight.

She saw Sheng Yuan’s calm expression.

But her face stiffened upon hearing his next words.

“Who gave you permission to call her Miss Ming.”

“She is my wife,” Sheng Yuan said, word by word, “From now on, address her as Mrs. Sheng.”
