Chapter 27: The Food Delivery Boy
The mountains stood silent, and not a sound could be heard from the temple, as if it had been abandoned for a long time.
Mingzhu stepped forward and grasped the somewhat tarnished bronze ring on the wooden door, knocking gently three times.
The long-neglected wooden door emitted a dull thud.
Through the wide gap in the door, one could see the courtyard overgrown with weeds, with several gray-tiled meditation halls standing quietly among them.
Just as Mingzhu thought the temple was empty, footsteps echoed from inside, growing gradually closer.
The wooden door opened, revealing a young monk behind it, his monastic robe faded from repeated washing.
The monk appeared to be in his early twenties, with refined features and exceptionally bright, spirited eyes.
Upon seeing Mingzhu, a flicker of admiration passed through his gaze.
His eyes then settled on Old Mr. Ming’s assistant, and he pressed his palms together in a respectful greeting. “Amitabha. What brings you here, esteemed patrons?”
He clearly recognized Old Mr. Ming’s assistant.
The assistant quickly stepped forward to return the gesture. “Young master, we’ve come to seek Master Daoqing.”
Hearing this, the young monk’s expression turned sorrowful. He pressed his palms together and bowed deeply.
“Amitabha… Three days ago, my master attained nirvana and departed this world.”
“This…” The assistant flustered, turning to Mingzhu. “Miss, the old master has…”
Mingzhu shook her head gently, indicating it was alright.
No matter the outcome, she had at least shown genuine sincerity throughout the process.
Hearing this, the young monk’s eyes suddenly lit up as he looked at Mingzhu. “Esteemed patron, could you be the eldest young lady of the Ming family?”
Mimicking the assistant’s earlier gesture, Mingzhu pressed her palms together in response. “I am.”
The young monk bowed his head. “Before my master passed, he left a message saying you would surely visit soon. He specifically instructed me to deliver an item to you.”
Mingzhu’s heart skipped a beat.
Had she not experienced rebirth, she would never have believed in such divine foresight, let alone traveled all the way to this remote temple.
Yet the old master had accurately predicted her arrival.
“Patron Ming, please follow me.”
The young monk led the way.
Passing through patches of weeds, the monk retrieved a brocade box from the sutra hall and solemnly handed it to Mingzhu.
Instead of opening it, Mingzhu asked, “Young master, may I look around?”
“Please feel free, patron.”
The young monk pressed his palms together and departed.
The temple consisted of only a few buildings, visible at a glance, with a stone-carved Buddha statue.
It couldn’t compare to the golden Buddha commissioned by Old Mr. Ming.
The kitchen stove was the most primitive earthen type, without even an electric light.
Mingzhu couldn’t help but feel admiration.
In an era of rapid technological advancement, there were still those who practiced their faith in such humble conditions.
Not lingering long, Mingzhu paid her respects to the Buddha statue before the group made their way back along the mountain path.
Once inside the car, Mingzhu opened the brocade box. Inside lay only a single slip of paper.
On it was written a single, large character: “Goodness.”
This character could convey many meanings.
She seemed to understand, yet not completely.
As the car slowly drove away, the dense forest outside the window gradually gave way to modern buildings.
“Miss, shall we head straight back to the estate?”
The driver glanced in the rearview mirror.
Mingzhu placed the slip back into the brocade box and nodded.
As the car entered the city, the streets grew busier with pedestrians.
Due to speed limits in the urban area, the car slowed down.
While waiting at a red light, Mingzhu gazed out the window, observing the strangers passing by.
From their expressions, one could sense that each person was vividly alive.
“Bang!”
A loud noise came from the rear of the car, causing the vehicle to jolt.
The female bodyguard reacted swiftly, immediately shielding Mingzhu’s shoulder: “Miss, be careful!”
“I’m sorry, Miss,” the driver broke out in a cold sweat on his forehead and quickly stopped the car, “A vehicle rear-ended us from behind.”
The driver had been working for the Ming family for over ten years without any mistakes.
The Ming family paid very high salaries.
Countless people coveted this job.
The competition was truly fierce.
He had always been careful and cautious every time, but this time, with the young lady in the car, an accident had still occurred.
He didn’t want to lose this job.
Mingzhu looked out the window.
The scene had already drawn many onlookers, with numerous people holding up their phones to record.
An electric bicycle lay overturned on the ground.
A young man wearing bright yellow delivery uniform lay on the ground, his specific condition unclear.
“Don’t worry, Miss,” the assistant immediately unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car, “I’ll go handle this right away.”
The moment the car door opened, Mingzhu could hear the discussions from the bystanders.
“Wow, this is a Rolls-Royce! A luxury car worth tens of millions!”
“This delivery guy is in trouble now, probably going to be bankrupted by compensation…”
“And the electric bike is fully at fault…”
“This guy was riding way too fast…”
“Can’t help it, in today’s society, it’s the pressure of life…”
An accident where a delivery person rear-ended a multi-million luxury car.
Instantly attracted layers of onlookers.
But the helmeted and masked young man hadn’t moved since falling to the ground.
“Could he be unconscious? Why isn’t he moving at all?” someone murmured quietly.
After getting out of the car, the driver and assistant were busy contacting traffic police, insurance company, and ambulance.
This time period was during morning rush hour.
The roads were very congested, and they wouldn’t be able to arrive quickly.
Although the onlookers were pointing and discussing, no one dared to step forward to check the young man’s condition.
“Miss,” the female bodyguard whispered, “should we notify the backup vehicle?” Shall we return to the manor first?”
Mingzhu looked at the figure lying on the ground, the harsh sunlight falling directly on his face.
No one was willing to step forward to shield him from the sun, his figure appearing thin and pitiful.
The rear door of the Rolls-Royce opened again.
The sharply dressed female bodyguard stepped out first.
Efficiently opening a black umbrella for shade while simultaneously protecting the upper edge of the car door.
The moment Mingzhu stepped out of the car, the surroundings immediately fell silent.
“Miss, why have you come out?” the assistant quickly called out.
After a brief silence, even more enthusiastic discussions erupted around them.
“My god, she’s so beautiful!”
“Is she some big celebrity?”
“Quick, take photos! Record!”
Many phone cameras were aimed at Mingzhu, but she paid no attention.
Even if photographed, these pictures and videos wouldn’t circulate publicly.
“Move him to a shaded area first,” Mingzhu spoke.
“Miss, liability hasn’t been determined yet…”
The driver hesitated somewhat, since he was the one driving, he needed to handle this properly.
The assistant had already taken action.
The intersection was quickly cleared, ensuring it wouldn’t obstruct traffic.
But the number of onlookers didn’t decrease.
Mingzhu curiously observed the young man who had been moved under the tree shade.
He was very tall with long, slender legs.
Earlier, the assistant couldn’t drag him alone.
Although wearing a mask and helmet, completely covered up.
Yet one could still see his entire face was flushed with an unnatural redness, his eyes tightly shut, breathing rapidly.
“Bring a bottle of water.”
The assistant fetched mineral water, half-lifted the young man, and removed his helmet and mask.
Another wave of astonished exclamations immediately rose around them.
The young man’s sweat-drenched black hair clung messily to his somewhat pale forehead, his cheeks flushed with a sickly rosy hue.
Even in such a disheveled state, his well-defined features remained strikingly beautiful enough to lift one’s spirits.
Mingzhu leaned closer to observe.
The young man’s long, delicate eyelashes cast shadows beneath his eyes.
Making her unable to resist wondering what those eyes would look like once they opened.
