Chapter 92: Four Seasons Know

***

Mujin, you’ve said these words so nicely and sincerely, that’s true…

But I’m still here! Saying these words that are no different from a confession, letting me hear it directly isn’t good, is it?!

Lin Yueye just wanted to find a crack in the ground to hide in.

Oh, no need for that, isn’t there one behind this tombstone? Already found a crack to hide in, no need to repeat the operation.

“Classmate Mujin…? Don’t tell your brother these things…”

“I will tell him.”

You’re not happy about it?!

Xia Mujin turned back with a playful smirk and winked at Lin Yueye, then eagerly turned back forward.

Somehow… it feels familiar.

Not just this scene, but the previous scenes too, they all gave Lin Yueye a sense of “deja vu.”

Looking at Xia Mujin telling her recent situations to that memorial photo, she was completely like a child under 10, sharing various interesting things with her elder brother. Since meeting her, Lin Yueye had never seen her speak with such light and lively tone.

“Look, brother, your sister must not be charming enough, even if I say this, Yueye might not agree.”

“Ah, speaking of which, I haven’t graduated from high school yet. If you were here, would you scold me for puppy love?”

“Even if you scold me, it’s useless. Who told you not to watch over me properly? Now your sister has run off with someone else, you regret it now, don’t you?”

Pfft, what regret are you talking about? Even if I wasn’t dead, I wouldn’t be so old-fashioned as to stop you from dating.

However… Lin Yueye could hear that Mujin didn’t really mean it this way.

She was just expressing to her departed loved one all those emotions that she had no one to confide in, no one to act spoiled with over these years.

“You must regret it… not being able to see me advance in school, never having sent me to school.”

“Since that day, I’ve celebrated every birthday alone… but I always kept your place. Year after year… it feels like it’s been so long, yet somehow… it feels like I haven’t celebrated a single birthday.”

“And your birthday too, brother, I still celebrate it as usual. That’s how it was before, and in the future… we’ll keep doing it the same way.”

She was smiling while saying it at first.

But why did her voice start to crack with tears as she spoke?

“Ah, do you remember that candied hawthorn shop we used to go to when we were little? They relocated due to demolition three years ago. The owner said he wasn’t going to continue the business, but I thought what if you came back one day, wouldn’t we still want to go buy some together? Haha… so I took over the shop. Even though the owner didn’t want to continue, our own people could keep running it. When I have nothing to do, I often go check on it. That rattan chair you used to lie in, sometimes I lie there too… close my eyes and take a nap, and half a day just passes by…”

When flowers bloom, and when they fall, I’ve watched them blossom and wither, counted countless cycles of the years.

Spring’s splendor, autumn’s yield, sitting by the window, waiting in silence, hoping for a fleeting glance of his smile. Snow has fallen for years, chilling my heart to the core, yet no footprints have marked his return in the snow.

The swing that the siblings had nailed together in childhood was covered in snow. Xia Mujin cleared away the snow herself and built a snowman.

The once-familiar gentle smile on the snowman’s face became increasingly blurred day by day. Even though Jin’er appreciated it alone, no one was willing to say again — you’re so skillful, it’s a pity the snowman will melt when spring comes, but don’t worry, we’ll make a new swing then, spring has its own things to do.

The snow melted, spring passed.

Where are you?

Standing while speaking, when words fell, she was already kneeling on the ground sobbing, still “greedily” wanting to continue telling stories of the past, thinking perhaps if he was really here, could they together remember those bustling peaceful years, butterflies flying and flowers dancing.

And there’s a saying that goes like this.

Never forget, think day and night, then hear the echo.

“Classmate Muj… Mujin.”

“Yueye…”

Look, bending down to see, she had already cried herself into tears.

Did she just start crying today?

Or had she been crying for all those years, just waiting for someone to help wipe away her tears, but no one could find where those tears were?

Even knowing this was beyond human capability, Lin Yueye still felt a “sense of dereliction” piercing like needles in her heart.

She also crouched down, using the back of her hand to wipe away the tears from the corner of the young girl’s eyes, burning hot, scorching the lost years.

I won’t tell you not to cry.

Because crying is also an expression of emotion, rather than keeping it bottled up inside, you should “accuse” that unreasonable brother like this.

But…

“Mujin, may I correct something you said?”

“I…”

“I think… your brother, he didn’t miss your school advancement. Remember? When he was found… he was studying at Qihai No.1 High School, in the same grade as you, and you were the student representative, right? I remember you gave a speech in front of the new students… do you know what this means…”

“!”

A dragonfly touches the clear spring, breaking the autumn water, just like Xia Mujin’s eyes that suddenly rippled with tears after being momentarily stunned upon hearing these words, one glance spanning ten thousand years, looking back to the midsummer of high school enrollment that year.

That boy who had struggled through hardships and forgotten many important things.

Raising his head in the crowd, he saw the graceful girl on stage, who had grown into a city beauty, who had already become independent.

Their lives had no intersection.

Even though he stumbled to the same school as her, fate played such a joke on them, making the two never meet, missing each other in such a small space, ultimately leaving regret.

But if you spread out this regret and look at it from above?

Why was Xia Muqing able to return to Qihai that he didn’t remember in the last few years of his life, standing under the stage where his family member shone brilliantly, watching her enter school in new clothes, even though confused, still having hope in his eyes, clapping with folded hands and smiling?

At first glance, it seems like fate’s unfairness.

But actually, it was fate’s mercy.

It gave Xia Muqing one last year. That year, he fulfilled his promise.

He also stayed alone in the shabby rental apartment, even though poor, he would buy a cake, sing the birthday song, sometimes crying, as if someone was humming along with him, but he had forgotten who it was.

Presumably at that time, she too, across half the city, was humming the same notes…

The two people trudged through mountains and waters, singing melodies that mixed with the noise of time and city, staying with the flying butterflies and flowers of childhood, together playing fate’s symphony — they had never been apart from each other, even though they never met.

Speaking of this… even Yueye’s eyes were filled with tears of “gratitude.”

“You say… you say when he stood below the stage… when he opened his eyes and looked at the stage, if he had known that such an excellent girl was his sister… don’t you think, how proud he would have been…”

“He did come to send me to school… Yueye… he really came…!”

“Yes, he didn’t break his promise, he came.”

He trudged through mountains and waters in tattered clothes, perhaps it was really just to see you once…

Lin Yueye responded to the girl crying loudly, lending her embrace for support, and herself… perhaps also needed such an embrace.

So warm… Mujin’s body temperature isn’t that cold at all.

The young man in the memorial photo before the tombstone smiled, even he thought there were regrets when he died, but little did he know, it had already been fulfilled.

Yueye gently patted Mujin’s back, her tone gentle and slow, surprisingly like a children’s song and a lullaby.

“Mujin… if one day you really fall in love with me, before I dump you… I’ll tell you a secret.”

“Can’t you… tell me now…”

“Nope?”

Even if you act spoiled with me now, it’s still not allowed, okay?

I think when I remember the sound of wind that year, remember the color of the butterfly that landed on the swing in the courtyard that year.

Equal with you, carrying complete memories, only then will I recognize you.

And that day… won’t be far away, after all, the distance between you and me no longer needs to traverse mountains and waters.

In front of the memorial photo, the potted plant that Yuebing placed had withered and fallen, someone always has to leave.

But behind the tombstone, fresh sprouts broke through the soil, meeting a passing butterfly, staying with each other for a moment.

Seasons turn, flowers bloom and wither, but there’s no need to worry about falling flowers.

Because the four seasons know, autumn also has flowers that should bloom in autumn.

Thank you for reading. I’m sorry to say this, but I may have to drop this novel. It’s a good story, but it remains unpopular and has been for a long time. I suppose tearjerker dramas aren’t to everyone’s taste. If you enjoy the story, please help by giving it a good rating and writing a review on Novel Updates.
