Chapter 84: Cruel

***

After chatting with her birth mother whom she couldn’t acknowledge for nearly 10 minutes, Lin Yueye felt somewhat content.

Being content doesn’t mean she had no regrets even if she were to ascend to heaven right now! She still had many regrets!

For example, there was a big regret right in front of her.

—— It was time, “I” had to be buried.

As it approached noon at 12 o’clock, the atmosphere in this cemetery suddenly became solemn.

The money spent wasn’t wasted, you get what you pay for. When they provide this feng shui treasure land for burial, the accompanying sense of ceremony wasn’t neglected in the slightest.

Starting from around 11:30 AM, staff members wearing white robes came to lay flowers at the grave pit and were responsible for digging up the soil behind the tombstone on site. Actually, digging a pit wasn’t a big deal, it could be done quickly, but this was about ceremony. They would pause after each bout of digging to gesture everyone to bow, sending off the deceased — then continue digging.

Lin Yueye just followed everyone’s rhythm, she didn’t mind. After all, in two lifetimes, no one had ever bowed to her, so this was kind of a unique experience after death.

And when that small deep pit was almost completely dug, approaching noon at 12 o’clock.

Luo Yahan, standing straight with hands clasped in front, looked around and quietly moved closer to Lin Yueye.

“Where’s Lin Lebing? It’s been almost an hour, still hasn’t returned from the bathroom?”

“I forgot.”

“Huh?”

“Ah… no, Teacher Luo, I mean I forgot to tell you, she felt the atmosphere here was too stuffy, so she went outside to wait by herself. She said she’d come back when the burial begins.”

Still got to praise my quick thinking!

Actually, Lin Yueye’s initial response was her true feelings. When she said she forgot, she really did forget.

She was so focused on talking with her birth mother and marveling at the wealthy people’s funeral procedures that she forgot the troublesome cat was still out chasing butterflies and hadn’t returned.

Luo Yahan withdrew her gaze, not caring whether Lin Lebing would make it back in time.

“Is that so… I thought she was being silly and got lost looking for a bathroom. But… when she said the atmosphere here is oppressive, I completely agree. I think you’ll likely lose your reward very soon.”

Luo Yahan wasn’t joking when she said this. Her tone remained calm, but after hearing it so many times, Lin Yueye could detect the obvious worry in it.

Luo Yahan deliberately turned sideways to give Lin Yueye a clearer view, which was also a kind of guidance.

Actually, there was no need for her to turn sideways, how could Lin Yueye not see?

What she wanted Lin Yueye to notice was Xia Mujin, standing alone on the lawn with a blank stare.

There was no light in her eyes, and her pupils weren’t focused on anything. Like a shell without a soul, she stared emptily at the dust being lifted piece by piece behind the tombstone. Occasionally her fingertips would tremble slightly as she clenched them, then slowly released.

When Luo Yahan said “you’ll likely lose your reward,” this was what she meant.

She looked like she could break down crying at any moment, didn’t she?

Naturally, Luo Yahan hoped Lin Yueye would win this “bet” and safely receive her reward, but now it seemed impossible.

Approaching Lin Yueye’s ear, Luo Yahan’s delicate fragrance wafted over, her tone cold as a blade of wind.

“If you think letting her stay that way without crying counts as your victory… sorry, I won’t accept that.”

“I had no such intention.”

“Oh?”

Lin Yueye didn’t say anything more.

She moved her feet, passing in front of Luo Yahan, approaching Xia Mujin’s direction.

The reason Lin Yueye hadn’t approached earlier wasn’t because she was avoiding it.

She was just giving herself some time to think about what to say and do, after all, her every move now would affect Xia Mujin’s emotions, which were as fragile as silk threads.

At the same time, she was also giving Xia Mujin some time.

Since Mujin had come and chosen to face this, she shouldn’t help her avoid it from the beginning, but rather let her experience this atmosphere first, face reality. Otherwise, coming here would have been pointless.

And when Xia Mujin had immersed herself in it, as the shadow in her heart gradually expanded…

That was when Lin Yueye should do something.

Yueye quietly stood beside her, with a graceful movement, gently clasped her palm, holding her right hand’s fingers. The pleasant sound of their dress sleeves rubbing against each other was barely audible.

Feeling the sudden warmth on her cold fingertips, Xia Mujin weakly turned her gaze to the side.

“Yueye…?”

“Mm, it’s me?”

In the dim vision, that beautiful face reflected in Xia Mujin’s eyes, though without a smile, was exceptionally gentle.

Xia Mujin was stunned for a moment.

Because… this seemed like a smile she had seen before, making her particularly nostalgic and surprised.

Lin Yueye gripped her fingers a little tighter, seeing that some life had returned to Xia Mujin’s eyes. Contrary to her usual behavior of avoiding Xia Mujin’s approach, this time she actively moved closer, her delicate body even pressing against Xia Mujin’s waist.

“Is this better?”

“Yueye… what’s happening? Why suddenly…”

This successfully diverted some of Xia Mujin’s attention.

“Classmate Mujin must be very sad…”

“Not really…” Xia Mujin’s voice was very low, without much conviction, but the strength with which she held Lin Yueye’s hand was clearly much stronger, “Didn’t I say before… I won’t care about it, after all, he’s a brother I’ve never met… what’s there to regret, buried… just… just let him be buried, I… I have Yueye here with me… that’s enough…”

Her eyes were full of Lin Yueye, full of this girl she depended on.

This wasn’t wrong, people will grab onto a lifeline when drowning, escaping from the towering waves.

Perhaps this way, Lin Yueye could easily win the bet, at least during this funeral, there wouldn’t be any problems.

But…

“Mm, I’m here with you.”

“Then… let’s go over there! Ah… it’s really suffocating here, I’ve been uncomfortable since the beginning… so noisy… so tired, let’s go…”

“But please look ahead.”

“Eh?”

“Seeing off a family member is a precious ritual. I… even wish I had such an opportunity. Even if Classmate Mujin doesn’t care… please show your brother the utmost respect, okay?”

“If Yueye says so…”

“Mm, thank you.”

Xia Mujin didn’t even ask what Lin Yueye was thanking her for.

After all, even though she was holding Yueye’s hand, as the final shovel of dirt completely opened the pit, and everyone bowed once again…

Lin Yueye could clearly feel that Xia Mujin’s palm had become covered in cold sweat, trembling even more severely.

Observing from the side, Luo Yahan raised her eyebrows, somewhat surprised by Lin Yueye’s decision.

Are you sure…?

To continue letting her watch?

It wasn’t that Luo Yahan thought it was bad to have Xia Mujin face reality.

But the next part… might be too cruel for her.

Hearing footsteps, everyone’s gaze gathered towards the cemetery staff.

Even Lin Yueye had already heard Su Shuolan’s unable-to-hold-back crying sound as she covered her face.

Because.

“Xia Muqing” had arrived.

The cemetery staff, holding a box covered with black cloth in both hands, step by step, with serious expressions, approached the watching crowd.

Everyone lowered their heads in silent tribute.

—— That was the cremation urn.

It was the final proof of Xia Muqing’s existence in this world.

Thank you for reading. I’m sorry to say this, but I may have to drop this novel. It’s a good story, but it remains unpopular and has been for a long time. I suppose tearjerker dramas aren’t to everyone’s taste. If you enjoy the story, please help by giving it a good rating and writing a review on Novel Updates.
