Chapter 80: Arrival

***

Lin Yueye rarely used “luxurious” to describe a cemetery.

In her impression, shouldn’t cemeteries be associated with words like “desolate” and “barren”?

But what was this place!

Where Teacher Luo parked, it looked like an expensively renovated hotel parking lot, with neatly painted parking spaces, marble columns around the perimeter, a small fountain at the exit, and lush greenery.

They walked quite far behind Teacher Luo before seeing the cemetery.

Those mountains, that water, that verdant scenery.

Surrounded by mountains and winding waters, my friends.

A meandering stream surrounded the vast main cemetery, distant mountains layered in emerald, nearby trees lush and green. Each tombstone had its own epitaph, three-tiered small steps, and well-dressed upper-class people coming in pairs or small groups to pay respects to family members, burning incense and praying, offering sacrifices before the tombstones, elegant as if in some otherworldly paradise.

Seeing Lin Yueye again in this melancholic and gentle state, Luo Yahan lightly coughed to call back her wandering consciousness.

“We’re almost there, why are you daydreaming again.”

“No… Teacher Luo, I’m just feeling somewhat emotional.”

“Tell me your thoughts, consider it practice for your Chinese teacher’s reading comprehension.”

“It’s just that, when people are alive they’re divided into different classes, with mansions and small apartments, and even after death it’s still the same story, some buried in remote wilderness, others eternally resting in scenic places like this. Whether dead or alive, people really are worlds apart…”

“Is that so… I don’t feel there’s any difference.”

Luo Yahan held down her ice-blue hair strands that were slightly lifted by the gentle wind, gazing at the same mountains that Lin Yueye was observing, speaking frankly rather than with emotion.

“When people die, they’re just piles of waste earth. No matter how beautifully the mountains are maintained, to the dead they’re still remote wilderness. You call it an otherworldly paradise, but in the end it’s still desolate land devoid of people at night, fundamentally no different from the concrete ground behind your house.”

“!”

Wow, Teacher Luo, you’re really straightforward, both in words and reasoning.

But what’s wrong with the concrete ground behind my house! It’s not like it’s stopping you from parking!

Luo Yahan’s long legs strode quickly ahead, while Yuebing, falling behind somewhat, held Lin Yueye’s hand and asked with innocent curiosity.

“Lin Yueye, where’s your tomb?”

“Whose tomb are you talking about.”

“Talking about your tomb.”

“How would I know, and that’s not my tomb, that’s my past life’s tomb.”

“It’s all the same.”

“This cat really has a way with words.”

While chatting, they had walked almost half of the winding path by the cemetery.

Lin Yueye occasionally observed the tombstones nearby, which all had photos of the deceased and their dates of birth and death.

Sometimes they passed by people paying respects, with soft sobs, and even though she knew this was a place for tears, it still made her heart heavy.

The cemetery wind was cool, and today Lin Yueye was wearing white short socks, her calves feeling a bit chilly.

Actually, it wasn’t her legs that were cold, but her heart.

She came to send off her past life self, but ended up just holding hands with a cat girl.

“She’s coming.”

“Yueye, what did you sa… huh?!”

No, wait, wasn’t that Teacher Luo speaking?

Before her mind could fully emerge from the cemetery’s atmosphere, she looked up to see Luo Yahan ahead turning back with a warning glance, stepping aside from the path.

Then… Lin Yueye saw that figure running towards them, waving in their direction.

“Yueye!”

“Classmate Mujin…?”

Wearing a plain black dress, pure white shoes that couldn’t help but gather some dust on the small path.

When passing Luo Yahan, she naturally said a polite “Thank you for your trouble, Yahan,” but without pausing at all, she was already standing in front of Yueye, tightly gripping Lin Yueye’s hand that wasn’t being held by Yuebing, like a drowning person grabbing a lifeline.

“You finally came, Yueye… why did you come so late? Was there traffic on the way?”

“The road wasn’t… um, yes, there was some traffic, we came a bit late.”

“Ah, I knew it, Yahan’s driving has always been good, so it must have been traffic.”

Actually, there hadn’t been any traffic, the whole way had been smooth.

Moreover, Lin Yueye had just checked the time, it was 10:00 in the morning, still two hours before the funeral was scheduled to begin, so there really wasn’t any “late arrival” to speak of.

But when she saw Xia Mujin now smiling to welcome her, with clearly reddened eyes, she couldn’t say anything else.

What you consider perfect timing might feel like an eternity to others.

You might think the timing is just right, but you don’t know how long those dozens of minutes might feel to her.

Precisely because it was such an occasion today, Xia Mujin felt every second was like a year, hoping Lin Yueye would come earlier to share some of time’s velocity with her.

Lin Yueye couldn’t turn back time, so somehow, she just silently gripped her hand back a little tighter, as if doing so would comfort some forgotten softness in her heart.

But this rare moment of tenderness didn’t last long.

After all, Xia Mujin really couldn’t ignore the other hand of her Yueye being held.

Following that hand to the side, she saw Lin Lebing who was holding a wilted potted plant while bobbing her head around observing the surroundings.

“So you came too… Classmate Lebing.”

“Yes, whoever Sister Yueye pays respects to, I pay respects to as well,” Yuebing said matter-of-factly.

Originally, Xia Mujin wasn’t very welcoming of her.

Especially her clothes, which seemed to match Yueye?!

So enviou… no, how shameless!

And if you’re coming anyway, what’s that thing you’re holding?!

“What’s that thing you’re holding? I don’t remember potted plants being used in this kind of ceremony.”

“Spider plant.”

“……”

So it really is.

But that’s not what I was asking about?!

Lin Lebing seemed like Xia Mujin’s nemesis, every sentence Xia Mujin said to her was like punching cotton, using considerable force but never feeling like landing a hit, which was quite infuriating.

Lin Lebing might have felt she was being a bit fierce, and even shrunk behind Yueye, which made Xia Mujin’s blood pressure skyrocket!

Actually, she wasn’t hiding.

Mainly because she saw some bread crumbs on the ground with a group of ants crawling towards them, so Yuebing kicked the crumbs further away, letting the ants crawl a bit more for exercise.

“Yueye, you look beautiful today too, you today…!”

“Xia Mujin.”

“Eh?”

Perhaps Xia Mujin wanted to say something more, but from behind, Luo Yahan’s cold voice interrupted her words.

When Xia Mujin looked back, Luo Yahan pointed ahead, reminding her.

“This isn’t the time for small talk with Lin Yueye, didn’t I tell you earlier? Once you start talking, you never stop. Uncle and Auntie have been messaging me since morning, saying they want to meet Lin Yueye. Now that she’s here, have you told them? If you have, you can take her over now.”

Uncle… Auntie?

Are they talking about the head of the Xia family and his wife?!

Lin Yueye’s heart suddenly skipped a beat, almost dying.

Come to think of it, Mom and Dad would definitely come to Xia Muqing’s funeral.

Coming here as Xia Mujin’s friend, meeting them would be natural.

Which means…

This time there’s really no escape, it’s going to be the first time meeting parents in two lifetimes?

Right, I was so focused on how to stop Xia Mujin from crying, how did I forget about this?!
