Chapter 62: Won’t Forgive?

***

When meeting someone and arriving early at the agreed location, there are typically two possibilities.

First is to express sincerity in apology by showing a clear apologetic attitude, letting the other person feel the sincerity.

Second is being too nervous to sit still, arriving early to familiarize with the environment and think about what to say.

Obviously, Xia Mujin fit both cases.

She sat there with an untouched coffee in front of her, fingers intertwined under the table rubbing and pinching each other, her gaze empty and unfocused.

After hesitating for a long while, the apology that had been brewing in her heart for several days finally came out slowly from her mouth.

“Thank you Yueye for still willing to meet me… about what happened at my house the other day… I’m truly sorry… I want to know if Yueye is feeling better now… after experiencing something like that… you must feel terrible, right…?”

“……”

There was no immediate response.

After all, Lin Yueye had anticipated that Xia Mujin would say these things.

Slowly placing the cup she was holding back on the table, Lin Yueye’s eyes showed no tears, but just a slight frown spoke more than tears could.

Her small lips trembled slightly, and her fragile tone of voice was simply pitiful.

“Yes… since that day… I’ve been very scared, I don’t know why Classmate Mujin would do such a thing… even though I said I didn’t want to…”

“That’s because…!”

She suddenly looked up trying to say something, but the words got stuck in her throat and were forcefully swallowed back.

Yes, she certainly couldn’t say it.

After all, the reason she became so “frantic” that day was because it was Ling Qingyue’s memorial service.

Unable to face reality, she tried to vent her almost collapsed emotions on Lin Yueye, even though she said she didn’t want to.

But since Xia Mujin was avoiding it, how could she possibly tell Lin Yueye this most fundamental reason?

Finally, Xia Mujin’s already empty gaze became more void, and the words she spoke while lowering her head, though barely audible, still carried an undeniable conviction.

“That’s because… I deeply love Yueye… that’s why I did that… I was impulsive, Yueye can report me to the police… you can hit me or scold me as you like, I won’t complain… after all… I almost… almost… hah… hah…”

“?”

Is that a repentant attitude!

Though speaking words of apology, as she recalled the situation from that day, Xia Mujin’s cheeks unconsciously flushed with an unhealthy red, her breathing becoming increasingly heavy, making it impossible to properly continue the apology.

The “shouldn’t be like this” and “feeling regretful” in her eyes were like angels and demons residing in the human heart, wrestling and fighting, making Xia Mujin’s mind almost crash and unable to think.

It was Lin Yueye’s soft call that brought Xia Mujin’s thoughts back to reality.

“Classmate Mujin…?”

“Hm?! Ah… sorry, I really am…” Xia Mujin clenched her fist and knocked her forehead with the back of her hand, “About what happened that day… Yahan told me everything, it was the maid who brought you there who felt guilty and confided in Yahan.”

Oh right, Teacher Luo said she had properly explained the situation from that day, and wouldn’t mention Lin Yueye’s plea for help.

“Will you fire that maid…?”

“Of course not.” Xia Mujin gave a bitter laugh, lightly shaking her head, her face still showing lingering fear, “Not only will I not fire her… I should give her a raise, she did the right thing, if she hadn’t told Yahan, and if Yahan hadn’t stopped me… Yueye might have really been… been defiled by someone like me.”

Don’t even mention purity.

Even her life might have been at stake.

Yueye had just recently emerged from the shadow of attempting to jump off a building, if she had been forcefully pinned down and played with by such savage behavior again, her mental capacity would likely face another breakdown, and this time it probably wouldn’t just be a failed suicide attempt…

Hearing the word “defile”, Lin Yueye felt a phantom pain in her neck, her thighs still retained the warmth of Xia Mujin’s burning hands from that time, regarding this incident, it indeed still left her traumatized even now.

“Actually, Teacher Luo suggested that I should report to the police.”

“Mm… that’s just like Yahan’s personality, straightforward about right and wrong, direct to the point, Yahan said you’re still hesitating whether to file a police report… right?” Xia Mujin’s bitter smile didn’t waver at this, “Actually… I also think I would feel better if Yueye chose to report it to the police… even if my reputation is ruined, that would be my retribution.”

“But I don’t want to report to the police.”

“Eh?”

Looking up in surprise, Xia Mujin could see that slightly grieved little face was exercising maximum tolerance.

“If I report to the police… Classmate Mujin’s reputation at school would become very bad, right… I know that feeling, so I don’t want you to become like that too.”

“Yueye, saying such things only makes me feel… feel worse…”

“It’s not like that… even though I’m scared and resentful, I know… that wasn’t Classmate Mujin’s true intention, if you were really the kind of young lady who treats others as playthings… why would you come to apologize to me today?”

“Yueye…”

Every gentle word struck at the bottom of Xia Mujin’s heart, so soft and tender, Lin Yueye’s words were like giving a direct massage to Xia Mujin’s tense emotions.

But before Xia Mujin could say a word of thanks, Lin Yueye completely turned away her gaze that hadn’t been meeting hers to begin with.

“But… I don’t plan to forgive you either, I’m not reporting to the police only because I know how unpleasant that feeling is, not because I think Classmate Mujin did nothing wrong.”

“I’m sorry…”

“Classmate Mujin really went too far this time… why treat someone like a pet… I only wanted to be normal friends with Classmate Mujin, right? I have dignity too, even if I die poor, I wouldn’t want to be collared and kept at home like a cat or dog.”

As she spoke, Lin Yueye seemed to suddenly remember something and was struck by it, bringing her hand to the corner of her eye, truly having something of a sobbing feeling.

“Uu… I regret this too… I originally hoped to be friends with you, I really thought Classmate Mujin was a good person at heart, I still think so… but now, we probably won’t be able to talk anymore…”

The little deer that had just entered her heart suddenly jumped out coldly, leaving Xia Mujin frozen in place.

Belatedly realizing what Lin Yueye had said, she hurriedly stood up, almost in a “desperate” state as she tried to remedy the situation.

“No… no! Yueye, I want to be friends with you too…! I know I was too hasty before, I apologize to you… I can apologize in any way! Let’s start over, be friends, yes, being friends is fine too… how could we not be friends? Don’t say that… give me one more chance… please?”
