Chapter 59: Suffocation

***

This is… probably how things went.

Originally, little Yueye thought recommending Yuebing was a wise decision, but seeing her being led in by Teacher Luo with that silly look on her face, she actually started to regret it a bit.

Pushing a cat girl to the front row to perform, could this really work?

Perhaps it wouldn’t have worked originally.

But Lin Yueye’s behavior of burying her head in her book, unable to watch directly, actually sparked Yuebing’s fighting spirit.

Human… are you looking down on a divine being?

I’m not here just to eat for free. Mere performance is nothing but child’s play for me.

As Lin Yueye was already in despair, almost certain that the plan would fail at the first step, she faintly heard Yuebing’s nimble voice in her ear.

Extremely crisp and decisive, light and natural.

“Hello everyone~ My name is Lin Lebing, ‘Le’ as in music, ‘Bing’ as in ice-cold cola. I transferred here from a school in a small place. I haven’t seen much of the world, so please forgive me if I make any mistakes in the future. Thank you all~”

Pff…!

She really chose that name!

Actually, before she came, Lin Yueye had thought of many nice-sounding names for her, but this annoying cat girl was insisting on something, saying she must also have the surname Lin, and must have the name Yuebing. She didn’t like any other names.

You can’t possibly be called Lin Yuebing, right? Who on earth would have such a name?

So both sides compromised, and finally, under Yuebing’s mysterious persistence, she chose the name “Lin Lebing”.

Come to think of it, it does sound quite nice, just obviously doesn’t match Yuebing’s personality…

As expected.

A round of applause followed, with discussions rising and falling.

Nothing special. The girls felt that the class had gained a mascot, with a kind of urge to feed her like a cute little animal.

And the boys naturally wouldn’t resist cute things either. In fact, compared to the girls, they were even more excited about this kind of moe-type girl.

But unfortunately, this is a school, not a zoo, and Luo Yahan wouldn’t give them time to ask questions or admire.

“Good, it’s a good thing for Lebing to transfer at this time. You have less than 2 years until the college entrance exam, and it’s worth congratulating her for having the chance to access better educational resources. As she said, she comes from a small city outside of Qihai, and may not have seen much of the world, but it might take some time to adapt to life at Qihai No.1 High School. You all need to help her integrate into the class. As for the new student’s seating arrangement…”

Luo Yahan pretended to “choose” as she looked around the classroom, but in fact, they had already arranged the seating beforehand.

“Li Yao, pack up your things and come to the front. I remember you saying you were nearsighted and sometimes couldn’t see the blackboard clearly, right?”

“Eh…?” A girl named Li Yao, sitting in the back row, pushed her glasses and looked surprised. “But… but Teacher Luo, the homeroom teacher wouldn’t let me change seats before. And I’ve changed my glasses, my eyesight is fine now.”

“I’ve already spoken with your homeroom teacher. Come to the front.”

“Okay…?”

Whether she had actually spoken to the homeroom teacher or not didn’t matter to Luo Yahan.

After all, the seat Li Yao had been sitting in was right next to Lin Yueye, separated only by an aisle.

Watching the girl beside her pack up and move to the front, Lin Yueye couldn’t help but admire the authority of the Xia family.

Teacher Luo said she would apply for Yuebing’s orphan identity certificate in the shortest time possible, which could save a lot of procedures. As for school enrollment, they could skip those complicated processes for now. The official school registration might take some time, but letting her come to school through the principal’s approval wasn’t a difficult matter.

— When you have shares invested in the school, you can be as willful as you like.

But Lin Yueye actually found it quite strange… Teacher Luo was a maid in the Xia family, so it made sense for the Xia family members, but could a maid really have such great authority? Wasn’t Teacher Luo so poor that she had to take the bus?

As Yuebing hugged the schoolbag handed to her by Luo Yahan and made her way to the back row seat, the gazes following her in the class were actually quite complex.

The seat beside Lin Yueye — quite a few people had been coveting it.

But no one dared to say it.

Especially the boys.

Lin Yueye might be at a disadvantage in terms of public opinion, but her figure and appearance were beyond reproach. If people were to privately evaluate candidates for the school beauty, Lin Yueye could even beat Xia Mujin by a few votes despite the unfavorable rumors. Considering that Xia Mujin was already known for her stunning beauty, it was enough to show that little Yueye was naturally gorgeous, and there were reasons for people to be jealous.

So the seat beside her was a “premium viewing spot”. When tired from studying, one could turn their head and see the profile of a goddess-like beautiful girl. How refreshing that must be.

The girl who sat beside her before was called Li Yao, the most honest and straightforward girl in the class, who cared about nothing but studying.

Not long after the start of the school year, the homeroom teacher had specifically arranged for her to sit in that spot. Actually, quite a few people thought she was lucky.

But strangely, wasn’t Li Yao all about studying? The back row was fine, but the front row would be more efficient. There was one time when she wanted to move to the front row, but the homeroom teacher actually refused. This was quite unusual.

But this time… Li Yao didn’t say anything and easily moved to the front row?

And now, the seat beside Lin Yueye was replaced by the newly arrived little mascot, probably without any controversy.

Even if someone felt sour in their heart, they couldn’t direct it towards the mascot. This was also a kind of balance, I suppose. This is how lolis are, conquering everything just with their cute appearance, harmless to humans and animals alike.

Yuebing sat in her new seat, swinging her short legs, occasionally showing off her new textbooks in her schoolbag to Lin Yueye.

【Hehe, mine are newer than yours, what do you say?】

“……”

So what if they’re new! If you keep babbling, I’ll draw a turtle on your new textbooks to let you experience the despicable side of humans!

“Alright, now that the seating is arranged, Lin Yueye, you and the new student happen to have the same surname, and you’re desk mates. Take good care of her in daily life. Your academic performance is good, you’re second in our class. If the new student has any questions, explain things to her more often.”

“O-Okay.”

Who was first again?

The last time I happened to see the grade sheet… was it Xia Mujin?

“Lin Yueye, after class, bring the new student to my office. Come pick up the test papers you missed the other day, and as for Lin Lebing, needless to say, I’ll give you some extra lessons to help you catch up with the class progress. That’s all for now, take out last week’s holiday assignment papers, and get ready to start the class…”

……………………………………

Extra lessons?

Lin Yueye really did bring Yuebing, each holding their textbooks, obediently coming to Luo Yahan’s office after class.

Seeing these two jokers, one tall and one short, looking so eager to learn, Luo Yahan could barely keep her expression straight.

She held her forehead and sighed.

“Ah… you didn’t really think… I was asking you to come here to do exercises, did you?”

“Well… Teacher Luo, isn’t the next exam coming soon? Lebing’s grades might be quite poor…?” At this point, Lin Yueye was still trying to fight for Yuebing’s chance to study. She could count quickly, but not from 1 to π.

But studying can be done anytime.

However, some things wait for no one.

Luo Yahan pushed down the textbooks in their hands, shoved all the test papers aside, and said with a serious expression.

“If it’s about studying, I don’t mind sparing all my time to teach you later. But now… take a look at this message yourself.”

“Message…?”

Lin Yueye took Luo Yahan’s phone, which had no case or screen protector, but was kept in good condition despite its plain appearance, and looked at the message displayed on the simple screen.

Judging from the contact name, it was sent by Xia Mujin.

【Yahan… can I ask you a favor? Are you at school? Can you help me tell Yueye something? If she can forgive me… I’m waiting for her at the coffee shop in the commercial street outside the school. If she can’t forgive me, please let me know too… I don’t dare to send her a message… Can you help me relay this?】

— Missed call.

— Missed video call.

【Yahan? Are you there?】

【Has Yueye responded?】

【Yahan? Please reply quickly! I’m suffocating.】
