Chapter 53: When to Open Eyes?

***

“Brother…? What’s wrong with you…?”

Xia Muqing would never speak like this.

His good upbringing made the boy’s temperament as gentle as jade, and all his tenderness was given to the family he spent day and night with.

So Xia Mujin absolutely couldn’t have seen Xia Muqing in such a fierce state.

And his merciless cursing did indeed successfully anger the criminals.

“You little bastard! Who the fuck are you cursing at?!”

“Cough…!”

The kidnapper with a volatile temper became enraged, grabbing Xia Muqing’s tie on his shirt. The boy’s wrists were tied behind a pillar, and being forcibly pulled forward like this, the collar tightened around his fragile neck, instantly making him cough violently a couple of times.

“Don’t touch him!!! Don’t hit my brother! Don’t hit him!”

With no time to ponder the reason for her brother’s unusual behavior, Xia Mujin screamed to stop them, tears falling in large drops on the ground.

She used her only movable feet to kick the ground hard, getting her previously clean shoes and princess dress covered in dust.

The little princess of the Xia family, who always loved being pretty and clean, couldn’t care less about these things now. Her eyes reflected the image of her brother being grabbed by the tie and coughing violently, unable to breathe. She was almost going crazy with anxiety!

Seeing Xia Muqing’s face turning blue, the other criminal quickly patted the assailant’s shoulder.

“Hey, Brother Liu, be careful! Don’t actually kill him.”

“Tch.” The man with a face full of flesh, called “Brother Liu,” disdainfully let go of the tie, cursing under his breath, “I just hate these rich kids. Just because they were born into the right family? It really pisses me off! If we didn’t need him, I’d kill him right here today.”

“Brother Liu, calm down, calm down! Once we finish this job, we can get as much money as we want, right? It’s not worth causing trouble here, we won’t be able to face the boss. Instead of this, let’s hurry up and take this girl away before something goes wrong.”

“Tch, he got lucky.”

Xia Muqing, released from the tie, leaned back against the pillar, gasping for air.

Xia Mujin’s voice was now completely choked with tears.

“Brother… wuwu… are you okay… don’t scare me…”

“Mujin… don’t be afraid… cough…!” Even though his face was full of ferocity just moments ago, when his gaze turned to Xia Mujin, there wasn’t a trace of fierceness in the boy’s eyes.

Taking advantage of the two criminals talking, he lowered his voice and quickly whispered instructions to Xia Mujin.

“No matter what happens… don’t panic… listen to your brother, from now on, close your eyes… okay? No matter what, don’t open them, and don’t speak. Just pretend you’re taking a nap… pretend all this… is just a nightmare, and when you wake up… you’ll be at home.”

“What about brother… brother will come home too, right…?”

“I… mm, of course, we promised to go home together, brother won’t lie to you… but if you don’t listen and open your eyes… then I won’t be able to come back, okay…?”

“But brother’s eyes look… I don’t want to…!”

“Listen!”

“…!”

The boy’s slightly stern rebuke was enough to make Xia Mujin gently close her eyes — even though she was unwilling.

Xia Mujin had always been a lively young lady who didn’t like to follow rules, but she always obeyed Xia Muqing’s words without question.

Because she knew that her brother was the person who loved her most in this world.

So she… should also trust her brother.

Brother said if she opened her eyes… he wouldn’t be able to come home, and Xia Mujin didn’t want that.

So, Xia Mujin slowly closed her eyes.

All the scary things around her seemed to be separated from her.

Brother wants to go home with Mujin…

Today is Mujin’s birthday…

Brother made a cake himself at noon, and promised to feed me in the evening… Brother has never broken his promises, has never lied to me.

If possible, Xia Muqing wished he could cover her ears for her.

But unfortunately, he couldn’t do that now.

“Brother Liu, you take the girl to the car first, you go ahead. After I release this boy, we’ll meet at the agreed place.”

“You don’t need to tell me.”

Xia Mujin kept her eyes closed.

She heard footsteps coming towards her, she couldn’t see her brother’s face, didn’t know what would happen, her whole body was trembling.

But until those footsteps were right beside her, when Xia Muqing’s cold voice sounded…

Everything seemed to become quiet.

“I’ve memorized your face…”

“Huh?” Brother Liu’s arrogant gaze, hiding murderous intent, looked down at the young master who calmly said these words. “Little brat, what did you say?”

“I said… I’ve memorized your face.”

Xia Muqing smiled coldly, his gaze sharp to the point of seeming unlike a 7-year-old child, but rather… like a praying mantis ready to strike back at the ants at any moment.

“Heh… Once you release me, I’ll draw your face… and that one over there too, you bastards, none of you will escape.”

“You… say that again?” The criminal’s fist clenched, veins bulging on the back of his hand.

“Say it again? What if I say it ten times? You damned trash, when I catch you… we don’t need the police, our Xia family can tear you to pieces, do you believe it…? When you fall into our hands, it won’t be so easy… mmph!”

“You’re asking for death!”

An adult’s heavy punch landed on Xia Muqing’s face.

Blood immediately sprayed from his nose, and two teeth flew out of his mouth.

Brother?!

Xia Mujin seemed to hear something falling to the ground!

Even though Xia Mujin wanted to open her eyes to see what happened, the words Xia Muqing had said were swirling in her 6-year-old naive mind — it was a kind of “protective charm.”

“It’s nothing… just a button that fell off… ha… really not sturdy.”

Xia Muqing spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva, enduring severe pain and tears, looking at the criminal in front of him with a challenging gaze, sounding full of sarcasm.

Little did he know, these words were meant for his sister to hear.

— Brother is fine, it’s just a button that fell off, so, don’t open your eyes, don’t look at anything.

The criminal’s temper had already reached its critical point.

He even picked up a piece of scrap metal nearby, but when he was about to smash it into the arrogant young master’s head… he still retained some rationality.

“Damn it… I’ve changed my mind, let you go? You little bastard, dream on!”

He shouted loudly to the person guarding the front door about the change of plan, deciding to take the boy and release the girl.

Obviously, this boy posed a greater threat, and if they didn’t make him behave properly in these days, it would indeed be risky to just let him go like this.

The criminal cut the rope binding Xia Muqing’s wrists with a knife, brutally slamming him to the ground, using his elbow to firmly press down on his delicate neck, rendering him immobile.

This is good…

Xia Muqing didn’t make a sound of pain, after all, that would frighten his sister.

This way… Mujin can be saved.

And at this moment.

The criminal guarding the door received a phone call and turned back with a terrified look, shouting!

“It’s bad, Brother Liu! We need to go! The Xia family’s people are here!”

“What did you say?! Didn’t the boss deliberately give the wrong address? How did they find us?!”

“I don’t know! Tch… The boss says the factory outside is already surrounded… Hurry! Either one will do, we need to escape from the back door immediately!”

“What about that girl?!”

“There’s no time!”

Xia Mujin’s wrists were still tied to the pillar, cutting through the sturdy hemp rope would take time, and running with two children wouldn’t be as fast as with one.

The criminals also knew what would be the safest option.

“Get up quickly…!”

Brother Liu forcefully lifted Xia Muqing’s arm, effortlessly picking up this boy who still had blood dripping from his mouth.

Actually… Xia Muqing’s consciousness was already a bit hazy, that punch earlier had made his head buzz, feeling dizzy and nauseous.

But… he heard it.

The Xia family’s people were just outside…

I want to go home with Mujin…

I want to celebrate her birthday, I even bought her a gift… I haven’t told her where it is.

“Let me go…!”

“Aah!!! Damn it! Skinny! Come help! This brat bites!”

“Forget it! Run first!”

Xia Muqing fought back with his remaining consciousness, biting and kicking, using all his strength. He knew that if he could just hold them up a little longer, until the Xia family’s people found them, he could be saved, could go home with his sister.

No matter how many times the thick elbow frantically struck his back, Xia Muqing held onto the steel beam welded to the ground, refusing to let go.

The criminal panicked.

He hurriedly picked up a steel block that had fallen nearby and violently smashed it against Xia Muqing’s head!

—ring————

Everything turned blood red, the world spinning.

Xia Muqing’s vision and consciousness sank into silence in a final struggle.

The sounds around him were chaotic, the sound of a truck starting its engine made him uncomfortable, the sound of the wind rushing outside was right by his ears, rough curses echoed all around.

Slowly… he knew nothing anymore.

He only knew that, in his muddled consciousness.

He was softly singing the birthday song.

And she, facing that childish and gentle voice, happily clapped her hands, keeping the beat.

……………………………………

“Young lady! Young lady! Are you alright! Young lady!”

“The young master was taken away by them through the back door! Contact the police! Quickly!”

The maid who came with the bodyguards helped untie the rope on Xia Mujin’s wrists.

The delicate wrists were already red from the binding, with traces of blood appearing.

But the usually delicate young lady didn’t cry out at all.

No matter how the maids called out, she didn’t respond.

She stared with wide, lifeless eyes at the blood stains scattered near the steel plate not far away.

Eyes…

When did they open?

Brother clearly said… if I just open my eyes… brother won’t be able to come back…?

Perhaps, the eyes were never closed.

She wasn’t an obedient child.

Empty and helpless eyes watched her dearest being beaten, blood splattering.

Amidst the concerned inquiries of the maids, her stiff lips gradually trembled…

The voice was very small, barely audible.

She was imitating the tune that Xia Muqing had weakly hummed with lip movements, smiling after realizing she had already opened her eyes, just before being knocked unconscious by the steel block.

“Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday to you…”
