Chapter 49: Why Does She Do That?

***

Should I… decide whether to destroy her or not…?

Hearing this, Lin Yueye was even stunned for a moment.

This couldn’t be blamed on her, after all, in her two lifetimes, when had she ever had any choice?

Working overtime is your “voluntary” choice, paying extra rent is your “willingness”.

If you’re not willing, if you don’t like it, losing your job and home, that’s also your “own fault”.

When the power of choice was suddenly handed to Yueye, she was a bit slow to react.

As for Luo Yahan, she seemed to have already anticipated that this sentence would be difficult for Lin Yueye to understand.

On her icy and cold face, a barely noticeable trace of sympathy flowed towards this poor little thing, and she immediately emphasized and added a point.

“Are you feeling scared? There’s no need for that. Even if you choose the latter, you don’t need to worry about her retaliating. No matter how bad Xia Mujin’s personality is, she’s not essentially bad, nor is she an unreasonable, unforgivable bastard. She also knows that this matter is her fault, not yours. This is the only point I can guarantee you.”

“I…”

“What?”

“Teacher Luo, can I not choose for now?”

“Huh…?”

Lin Yueye clasped her hands together in front of her chest, her gaze softly cast towards the girl lying on the sofa.

Even for Luo Yahan, who had studied psychology, it was difficult to read exactly what complex emotions were in Lin Yueye’s eyes at this moment.

Soon, Yueye turned her gaze, as gentle as water, back to the front, and when her eyes met with Luo Yahan, she gave this explanation.

“You’re right… Being too weak will lead to constant bullying, but I want to hear everything you have to say first, to judge… whether I should choose another way to handle this, is that okay…?”

“……”

In the silence, there was a slight surprise.

After a moment, Luo Yahan turned around, her brown mid-heel shoes of her maid outfit making crisp clicking sounds on the stairs as she led the way upstairs again.

“I’ve said it before, the choice is yours. Whether it’s okay or not, you don’t need to ask me.”

“Th… Thank you!”

Lin Yueye thanked her and quickly quickened her pace to follow her to the second floor, the knot in her heart finally untangling a bit.

Hmm… This is good, she’s not that naive.

Although Yueye had no intention of calling the police from the start, she wouldn’t say it so easily.

Lin Yueye followed the cold beauty up the stairs, each step feeling as if she was treading on the painful life experiences of her previous life.

If a person doesn’t leave themselves a backup plan… if they’re too naive, they’ll end up suffering.

Think about it, if she had easily said “I won’t call the police”, then when Luo Yahan got to the second floor, she probably wouldn’t have much more to say to Lin Yueye.

Since you’re not planning to deal with this matter anyway, what else would she have to say to you? At most, she would just comfort Lin Yueye’s emotions a bit, then send her away, after all, things have already come to this, right?

But if she reserves, at least pretending in front of Luo Yahan that she might still choose to “call the police”…

Then it’s different.

Don’t be fooled by Luo Yahan’s constant emphasis on “I’ll help you”, Lin Yueye clearly remembered that Xia Mujin had said — she and Luo Yahan were childhood friends who grew up together.

Since they’re childhood friends, when something like this happens, Luo Yahan’s heart can’t be as calm as she appears on the surface.

Even if, for some reason, she truly despises Xia Mujin to the extreme and hopes Lin Yueye will call the police to handle it, shouldn’t there be some hints?

So no matter what she’s thinking, and regardless of why she’s doing this or how she hopes Lin Yueye will act, as long as Lin Yueye doesn’t reveal her choice too early, Luo Yahan will have to say something useful, like…

— Why exactly did Xia Mujin develop such an extreme personality.

Actually, this has nothing to do with the current Lin Yueye.

Each step on the stairs felt heavy, just like Lin Yueye’s downcast gaze.

She didn’t know why she wanted to know these things, why she wanted to learn more about Xia Mujin…

No…

Perhaps, she knew.

It was probably because of that young man lying in the crystal coffin in this mansion, Xia Mujin’s older brother, who still couldn’t rest in peace.

Unable to rest in peace, unable to fully let go — not just because of the tragedy of food poisoning.

But also what he missed in the life that slipped away from him.

………………………………….

Xia Mujin was “peacefully” sleeping on the sofa downstairs, while Lin Yueye, at Luo Yahan’s invitation, followed her up to the second floor.

Upon reaching the second floor…

Lin Yueye confirmed that this was indeed not some kind of reception room.

The room in the middle was unbelievably large, with a big soft bed that little Yueye would envy to tears even in her dreams, spanning north to south.

As for the overall decor and layout of the room, it wasn’t much different from an ordinary home.

This wasn’t important, what surprised Yueye the most was that Xia Mujin’s room was filled with all kinds of cute plush dolls, on the table, along the walls, in the corners, even on the windowsills, a pink sea of softness and cuteness.

It was just like the decor that some cute little girls with princess fantasies would have, completely mismatched with Xia Mujin’s violent personality…?

But Lin Yueye only caught a glimpse of the room from outside, as Luo Yahan, who arrived a bit later, closed the door.

“Very curious?”

“Ah… no, I just didn’t expect Mujin would like these plush toys too…? Sorry… I shouldn’t have looked around.”

“Don’t worry about it, I originally didn’t care, but I’m now the head maid employed by the Xia family, right? If you eat their food, you have to do their work. Guests of the Xia family are not allowed to enter the Xia family’s private residences without permission, that’s the rule. I’m not about to break the contract on this small matter. Anyway, it doesn’t matter where we talk, come this way.”

“Okay, I completely understand, work is just that difficult… Especially since Teacher Luo has multiple roles, it’s really impressive.”

“Heh… your words have become sweeter recently, kid. Did you have some enlightenment after experiencing a life-and-death situation? Uh… why are you squeezing into the corner, are you still scared?”

“No… not at all, I’m just not used to such a big house.”

Yeah, right.

It’s true that she’s not used to it, but little Yueye is squeezing into the corner to use her body to squeeze the little cat girl closer to the wall!

Yuebing is hugging a big bag, full to the brim, her face beaming with the joy of acquisition, but being squeezed hard against the wall by Lin Yueye, she’s almost being squeezed into a cat pancake.

【Lin Yueye, what are you doing! I just sent out a distress signal for you, and now you’re repaying kindness with enmity by trying to squeeze me to death!】

I really want to squeeze you to death!

Is this bag you’re hugging all salt? Are you trying to turn the house into a salt production site?!

Ah, there’s no time now to choose between throwing away Yuebing or throwing away this bag of salt.

After all, Teacher Luo leading the way in front has already stopped at the farthest corner of the second floor, where a beautiful landscape painting is hanging.

I don’t know why we specifically came here, but Lin Yueye probably could ask something to break the silence…?

“Um… Teacher Luo, may I ask if Mujin usually lives with her parents? Such a big house… it can accommodate many people, right?”

Luo Yahan reached out to adjust the binding of the obviously valuable landscape painting on the wall, then her cold profile reflected in Lin Yueye’s eyes as she answered her question.

“Indeed, there are many rooms, it can accommodate many people, but Xia Mujin has lived alone since she was young. The rooms you saw, except for her living quarters, are all storage rooms or empty rooms.”

“Living alone…? Where…”

“Here.”

“……”

Wait…

This house, which is comparable in size to a reception hall…

Only she lives here?!

Is the extra space for square dancing?

Lin Yueye couldn’t understand rich people’s thinking.

As if seeing Lin Yueye’s shock, Luo Yahan sighed lightly and let go of the decorative ribbon she was adjusting on the painting.

“Don’t misunderstand, this isn’t rich people making trouble out of nothing, it’s just a necessity.”

“Necessity…? But… does one person need to live in such a big place? I don’t quite understand, and you said since childhood… did Mujin dare to live alone in such a big place when she was a child? This probably refers to after she started middle school…?”

“Earlier, from about 7 years old.”

“So young…? Wasn’t she scared?”

Lin Yueye looked around. This place looks grand now, but when night falls and it gets dark, it would probably be like those castles in movies. For one person, the more spacious the living environment, the more it would scatter your confidence, not to mention when it’s windy and rainy. The scenes shown in movies could literally scare someone to death.

Living alone in such a place… isn’t that asking for trouble?

Just as Lin Yueye thought Xia Mujin was naturally brave, Luo Yahan’s response completely surprised her.

“Of course she was scared. That girl is more timid than anyone, afraid of the dark, and afraid of thunder, that’s why there are so many plush toys in her room, to give her courage.”

“Then why does she still live alone… wouldn’t it be better to live with her parents…”

“If anyone else moves into the mansion, she would suffer from severe insomnia. Living alone alleviates it a lot.”

“Oh…? Then why not live in a smaller place? If it’s not so spacious, maybe… it would be much better?”

“She’s most afraid of enclosed spaces. If the living space gets smaller, I guess even sleeping pills wouldn’t help.”

“Huh?”

She even needs to take sleeping pills?

Oh no.

After this conversation, it seems Lin Yueye didn’t understand a single word!

Why does she do that?!

Thank you for reading. I’m sorry to say this, but I may have to drop this novel. It’s a good story, but it remains unpopular and has been for a long time. I suppose tearjerker dramas aren’t to everyone’s taste. If you enjoy the story, please help by giving it a good rating and writing a review on Novel Updates.
