Chapter 42: She’s Gone Mad

***

Sometimes, silence is the most deafening.

“Classmate Mujin…? What exactly is…”

This was already the second time Lin Yueye had spoken up to ask.

But Xia Mujin was just checking the door lock on her own, as if she hadn’t heard Lin Yueye’s call.

Until she stroked the LCD screen of the door lock that had been heavily encrypted from the inside, muttering to herself one sentence after another, completely unlike she was responding to Lin Yueye’s words.

“Please ask Miss Lin to wait in the back hall for a moment.”

“The master and madam would like to see you too.”

“Your arrival here is worth having a celebration banquet for.”

“Because you are the young lady’s first friend.”

What… what nonsense are you talking about to yourself?

Lin Yueye was a bit nervous, originally not intending to listen carefully, but those familiar phrases flooded into her mind, linking with words spoken not long ago. Where this sense of familiarity came from, a certain conclusion suddenly took shape in the girl’s mind.

Looking at that figure that seemed to be trembling slightly with excitement, Lin Yueye’s cold sweat suddenly seeped out.

This is bad…

Really terrible…

“That maid… were all the things she said taught to her by you, Classmate Mujin?”

“Yes, Yueye is very smart, but you understood a little late.”

She directly responded to Lin Yueye’s words for the first time.

Xia Mujin’s fingertips slid from top to bottom along the LCD screen.

As her fingers left the door panel, with her heel as a pivot, pinching the hem of her black dress, Xia Mujin turned from the door like an elegant dancer. Though it was a very natural smile, it made Lin Yueye shudder.

“Yueye guessed correctly, every sentence she said, every action, every expression, was what I had her recite word for word, and required her to perform with emotion. This is a basic skill for the maids in the Xia family, hmm, they’re all very excellent. If it wasn’t like this, Yueye wouldn’t have obediently followed her here…”

She moved.

Her heeled shoes stepping on the floor made a sound like a funeral bell.

The smile on her face remained unchanged, but in the backlit direction, it suddenly took on an unnatural blush.

“Ah… but there’s one thing I should make clear, although it was word-for-word recitation, the part about ‘Yueye being my first friend’… is absolutely true, okay?”

“That really doesn’t seem to be the case… Classmate Mujin is clearly so high above others, and so good at manipulating people’s hearts…”

Lin Yueye smiled bitterly and stepped back against the sofa.

Having just been tricked, she now found it hard to believe anything the other said.

But Xia Mujin just shook her head, not stopping her steps.

And because of what Lin Yueye had just said, she added some sadness and grievance.

“But I… have never thought of myself as anything special… That feeling of being different from others since birth, Yueye can understand too, right? When they talk to me, they all wear masks and falsehoods, everyone is flattering, people like this… why should I have to call them ‘friends’?”

“Classmate Mujin… what do you mean by this…?”

“I’m saying… only you, Yueye, are different…”

The face of otherworldly beauty, with a somewhat dreamy expression, was already right before her eyes.

Lin Yueye could continue to retreat, after all, this place was spacious.

But she knew that from the moment the door was locked, retreating had already lost its essential meaning.

Two extremely beautiful pairs of eyes stared at each other, finally the deep, dark one, as if admiring some enticing work of art, cupped her hands towards Lin Yueye’s cheeks.

“We are the same kind… I’m surrounded by flattery, you’re surrounded by rumors, they’re all lies anyway… Yueye, we can definitely become good friends, right…”

“I’m not like you…”

Lin Yueye suddenly retreated a step to avoid Xia Mujin’s hands. Although her face still looked calm now, her heart had actually been freaking out long ago.

But…

Hearing her say “the same kind”, then looking at the splendor here, thinking about the path of trials she had walked to get here…

Lin Yueye instinctively wanted to refute her, that anger burning over from a rainy night at the orphanage.

“How are we different…?” Xia Mujin wasn’t in a hurry though, lowering her hands and asking with an indulgent look in her eyes.

“Flattery can’t hurt you… but rumors can hurt me. Your sorrow is just one-sided… but my experiences… I had no choice.”

“Yes… Yueye is much more pitiful than me…”

Xia Mujin’s eyes reflected this face so beautiful it made one lose themselves, memories seeming to tick-tock in some classroom on a sunset afternoon.

“But it was you who was so pitiful… who said that day, that I was the miserable and pitiful one.”

“?”

Past Lin Yueye! When did you dig yourself into such a hole?!

Xia Mujin’s indulgent gaze became increasingly unfocused, she slowly spread her arms, as if praising the girl before her as incomparable.

“Yueye… do you really know how different you are… how excited you make me…?! Ah… I wanted so much to refute you then, I wanted so much to say how could a pitiful wretch like you, who has to struggle with all your might just to stay alive, just to prove your innocence, turn around and pity someone like me…? But I found… that you were completely right, in all my life… I’ve almost never heard a single true word, they smile at me on the surface, but behind my back who would really treat me as a friend? And you…! You who no longer cared about life or death… told me the truth.”

Xia Mujin’s breathing became very heavy, she seemed to be trying hard to control her hands, her whole body was tense.

“You could have just cried and begged me once… and I could have silenced all of them for you, but you said you didn’t need it… Your hateful eyes at that time almost made me lose my mind… Do you know, when you said that even if you died, you wouldn’t submit to others again, I realized that everything you said was right…! Compared to you, I’m just like a fake thing, I’ve almost never truly lived, I absolutely could never make that kind of expression!”

“What on earth are you saying…”

She’s gone mad.

Lin Yueye felt, she really had gone mad.

Having everything wealth and glory could offer, yet seeing through the falsehood within at such a young age, this crazy young lady craved the world that existed only in Lin Yueye’s eyes, not her poverty, but the tenacity of her soul.

“So… Classmate Mujin, do you… want to be friends with me?” Lin Yueye tried her best to remain restrained, knowing that her every move now could lead to irreversible consequences.

Fortunately, Xia Mujin nodded.

“Mm… of course, being able to be friends with Yueye like this is my honor, right…?”

“If it’s just that… then I think it shouldn’t be difficult…?”

Unfortunately, Xia Mujin seemed to have stopped listening already.

She looked at Lin Yueye as if intoxicated, like she was examining the perfect world she had fantasized about countless times.

“How could just being friends be enough… Rather… Yueye, I may have already fallen in love with you…”

“Huh?!”

“Ah… I’ve been dreaming of imagining, if I could make that gaze submit… if I could see you who are so strong, you who have already crossed over life and death… rebelling against the whole world to the end, yet only begging and crying to me… then would I be able to become real like you? That must be what it means to be alive! Yueye… Yueye! Tell me, how could I not love you like this!”

“?!”
