Chapter 40: Did I Misunderstand Her?
***
Why did the location suddenly change?
Lin Yueye’s earlier agreement was just a temporary measure. She wasn’t truly mentally prepared to meet the parents!
The brown-haired maid walked gracefully in front, leading Lin Yueye out of the hall. According to her, they were going to a place called the “Back Hall” to wait for Xia Mujin. Her parents would also make time to meet Lin Yueye there privately.
In weather that was not at all cold at around 20 degrees Celsius, Lin Yueye forcibly walked with stiff steps behind the maid.
Stepping on the gravel path next to the garden fence, her heart was racing like a well-shaken bottle of Pepsi. She lowered her voice and leaned close to Yuebing’s ear, her earlier confidence suddenly diminishing by half.
“This is bad, Yuebing. How did Xia Mujin really manage to invite her parents out? Your parents just finished mourning their dead son, do they really have the mood to meet their daughter’s friend?”
“I don’t have a father or mother. I’m a naturally born spirit. How would I understand such things?”
“That’s true. In a sense, you’re also an orphan.”
“You’re not wrong to say that. I am indeed an orphan.”
Alright.
Although she didn’t get any useful information, her mood somehow improved a bit.
The silver-haired girl straightened her back and squinted, observing the back of the maid who had slowed her pace to match Lin Yueye.
As expected of a maid from a wealthy family… She must be judging the distance by the sound of footsteps, not walking too fast to embarrass the guest. It’s an essential skill for guiding visitors.
Lin Yueye was a bit suspicious.
Just as she had said earlier.
— Xia Mujin’s parents had just been mourning their son, would they really have the mood to meet their daughter’s friend?
They didn’t know Lin Yueye’s true identity. For just a mere friend, was it worth taking time out of their grief to greet her with a smile?
Even if she did face them, Lin Yueye wouldn’t be nervous. It would be happy to talk to the parents she had never known.
But…
If this was some trick that Xia Mujin was playing, it would be different.
Just as Lin Yueye was pondering whether to play it safe and find an excuse to go back and continue waiting…
The maid walking ahead further slowed her pace.
She half-turned towards Lin Yueye with a smile.
“Miss Lin, the Back Hall is just ahead, not far now.”
“Eh? Ah… thank you. Is it that white building ahead?”
“Yes, it is. We’ve already prepared tea and pastries in the Back Hall. You can rest there for a while and wait for the young lady and others to arrive. Also… if I may be so bold.”
The brown-haired maid, just before stepping onto the stone stairs leading to the white three-story villa opposite the hall, suddenly stopped and turned, giving Lin Yueye a graceful nod.
“Please allow me, on behalf of the maid team, to express our sincere gratitude for your presence today. The young lady looks very happy today. It’s wonderful that you could appear at the venue.”
“Gratitude…? Ah, please raise your head. I don’t remember doing anything worthy of your thanks…”
A white lotus under the sun, baking out the freshest scent of a little green tea.
When Lin Yueye showed a troubled expression with this appearance, that pure and innocent feeling would make anyone be honest with her.
The brown-haired maid was stunned for a moment, and somehow, as Lin Yueye said, she raised her head.
Then, the maid’s tone became even more sincere than before.
“Miss Lin, please don’t say that. Your friendship with the young lady is something worth celebrating for the entire Xia family.”
“?!”
Is it that exaggerated?!
Xia Mujin is beautiful and rich. Lin Yueye thought she must have a bunch of friends. What could she count as?
Could it be that she’s actually Xia Mujin’s first friend?
“Because you are the young lady’s first friend, you have no idea how moved we maids were when we heard she was bringing a friend home today… It’s been over 10 years, and this has never happened before… We were really moved to tears.”
It really is!
“That’s not… I think someone as outstanding as Classmate Mujin must have many people who like her.”
“You’re right, but ‘liking’ and ‘willing to approach her’ are two different things. The young lady is naturally introverted and unwilling to communicate with others. She’s always been alone. Although she’s outstanding, the pressure on her shoulders is too great… The master and madam are also very worried… You don’t know, when they heard you were coming, the master and madam were overjoyed. They…!”
Realizing she was getting too excited, the maid who had been working for the Xia family for over 10 years calmed herself down, using her excellent professional skills to readjust her speech to an appropriate level.
“They said they must meet this girl who is willing to be friends with the young lady. You know… today is the memorial service for their missing son. These days, the madam’s mood has been very depressed. I think the young lady specially arranged for her to meet you, hoping to change the madam’s mood. Being constantly depressed can make one sick. I can only say… the young lady is being filial.”
So that’s how it is…
After hearing these words, Lin Yueye suddenly felt a bit guilty.
Perhaps she had thought too badly of the person.
There might be some extreme aspects to Xia Mujin’s personality, but she shouldn’t condemn her entirely just because of this.
Lin Yueye was quite gratified.
Perhaps this former sister doesn’t care much about her unfortunate older brother, but at least she’s quite filial to her parents.
Maybe I’ve gained another reason to rest in peace.
………………………………
The maid left after bringing Lin Yueye to the Back Hall. She slowly closed the big door, respectfully gesturing for Lin Yueye to wait patiently.
And now, in the spacious reception room.
There was only one person and one cat left.
After seeing off the maid, Lin Yueye immediately relaxed her spirit. She turned around to survey her surroundings, unable to help but marvel.
Is this what the inside of a duplex villa looks like…?
The height of this floor alone is enough to stack five Yuebings, right?
Lin Yueye even naively stood on her tiptoes trying to measure the distance between the porcelain white floor tiles and the marble ceiling, but this was obviously futile. In the face of the power of money, she seemed too insignificant.
“Wow… this reception room is too big, isn’t it? It’s like a palace from TV… Yuebing, did you see? This is the goal we’ll strive for in the future.”
“Wuwu, Lin Yueye, this place is too wonderful, this thing is powerful, delicious! Really delicious!”
“Can’t you appreciate the architecture… You only know how to eat, what are you eating?”
Lin Yueye shrugged helplessly and walked to the table in front of the large white vase against the wall not far away.
Just as the maid had said, it was full of various small cakes, donuts and other sweets, as well as floral teas and red wines. Seeing these things, Lin Yueye’s suspended heart finally settled down completely.
Phew… It seems she had overthought things. She had suspected Xia Mujin of playing tricks earlier, but now it was clear that this reception space, along with the snacks and desserts, was obviously arranged for her to meet Xia Mujin’s parents, not out of some selfish calculation.
Really, it’s not right to misunderstand others like this~
After silently apologizing to Xia Mujin in her heart and shaking her head with a wry smile, Lin Yueye temporarily set aside various suspicions in her mind. She then noticed that Yuebing was tearfully breaking open cakes and stuffing them into her mouth one after another, occasionally pressing her hands together in prayer — the deity had actually started thanking the human world for its food offerings, truly a reversal of roles.
“I’ve never seen you like cake this much before… What flavor is this cake?”
“Cake flavor!”
“What a thunderstruck artistic expression…”
“Wuwu, the cake isn’t important…! What’s important is this seasoning, this one, it’s super delicious!”
“Is this… white sugar?”
Yuebing was breaking open the cakes and eating them dipped in the white powder served in a bowl, one piece after another, seeming to enjoy it immensely.
Lin Yueye remembered that when she was young, steamed buns dipped in white sugar were indeed delicious… but eating too much wasn’t good, right?
However, Yuebing was a deity.
She simply couldn’t be judged by human standards. She had said herself that even if she ate all the snow biscuits in the human world, there wouldn’t be any problem. Just in terms of her stomach capacity, even black holes would fear her.
Perhaps because there were enough cakes here that couldn’t be finished, and Yuebing had just discovered a new world, she dipped a piece of cake in the white powder and held it to Lin Yueye’s mouth.
“Here! You try it too!”
“Cake is already sweet, won’t this be too sweet… Well, a little bit should be fine, ah…”
The cake covered in “white sugar” was pushed entirely into Lin Yueye’s open mouth by Yuebing.
As a result…
The moment her tongue touched the edge of the cake, Lin Yueye’s eyes widened suddenly.
“What…! Cough! Cough cough! It’s so salty! What is this?!”
“?!”
Yuebing was startled, she hadn’t expected Lin Yueye to have such a shocking reaction to the delicious food!
Human, you really understand!
Not daring to spit it out and dirty the clean floor, Lin Yueye swallowed the cake with an almost dying feeling. Then she picked up the plate full of “white sugar”, dipped her finger in it a little, brought it to her mouth, and carefully licked it with the tip of her tongue.
After confirming, she was dumbfounded.
“Salt?!”
