Chapter 38: Master and Servant?
***
“Hmm? Has Yueye already met Yahan?”
“Yes…? Teacher Luo came to teach our class.”
“I see, I see…”
Huh?
Although it was a normal question and answer exchange, and Lin Yueye didn’t feel she had said anything wrong, she somehow felt that Xia Mujin’s tone suddenly became less friendly…?
Yuebing somehow got hold of a cake and stood on tiptoes to offer it to Lin Yueye, but she wasn’t intending to share with Lin Yueye.
【Look at this little cake, it has patterns, isn’t it pretty? Don’t eat it though, I’m just here to show off. I’m holding it close to your mouth, but your eyes and mouth aren’t far apart, so just look at it, okay? Don’t swallow it in one bite!】
How despicable can you be!
If there weren’t so many people here, just for your despicable behavior, I would really perform a one-bite swallow for you!
Lin Yueye used her elbow to block Yuebing’s cake from her face while observing Luo Yahan walking towards the coffin below.
She was wearing the same maid outfit as when they met at the rental apartment, with simple lace trim, paired with white tights underneath. This light and cute style didn’t really match her mature and cold aura, but who cares when she looks good in anything, a perfect clothes hanger.
She walked around the ground floor hall, returned to her original position, then went to ask a few questions to the maids nearby. After everyone shook their heads, Luo Yahan sighed lightly and took out her phone from her pocket, seemingly making a call to someone.
Lin Yueye noticed a detail.
Those maids seemed to be very respectful towards Luo Yahan, straightening their backs when speaking to her.
She didn’t know who Luo Yahan was calling or what it was about, it wasn’t Lin Yueye’s business anyway. She was about to turn back to ask Xia Mujin about tomorrow’s cremation at the crematorium when she heard a phone ringtone coming from the pocket of Xia Mujin’s plain black skirt.
“Sorry, I need to take this call.”
Xia Mujin gave Lin Yueye an apologetic look, then took out her phone and answered, holding it to her ear.
“Yahan, what’s the matter? Hm, me? I’m on the second floor, with Classmate Yueye. You can see me if you look up. Ha… It’s nothing, just find a new one and put it there, no need to investigate. There are many people here with prying eyes, and there’s no need to waste effort on such a small matter. Oh my, Yahan, why are you becoming more and more like a nagging old lady? Don’t worry about other things, your main job today is to maintain order at the venue, you just need to take care of your… Oh… She hung up.”
“……”
What a fierce maid, hanging up on her young lady’s call directly!
Lin Yueye was slightly surprised. Luo Yahan below looked up towards the second floor for a moment, not waiting for Xia Mujin to finish speaking, then hung up and put away her phone, immediately turning back and quickly leaving the venue, doing who knows what.
Little Yueye knew she probably shouldn’t ask.
But curiosity was like water in her life, if not satisfied, she would die of thirst.
She patted Yuebing’s head, letting her go eat the cake by herself, and while Xia Mujin was putting away her phone with a helpless bitter smile, Lin Yueye asked quietly.
“Um… did something happen?”
“Something? Ah, it’s nothing, just Yahan being too serious about her work, wanting to confirm every little thing.”
“Little thing?”
“Yeah, it seems a few pieces of cake that were originally placed at the back of the hall as offerings for my brother are missing. Can’t we just replace them? Maids making mistakes in their work happens from time to time. If everyone in the Xia family had Yahan’s personality, wanting to get to the bottom of every little thing, many things wouldn’t be able to function. I really can’t… Ah haha, sorry sorry, why am I telling Yueye all this, anyway, don’t mind it~”
“I see, the cake is missing… cake… huh?!”
“What’s wrong?”
Lin Yueye thought for a moment and then looked serious and suddenly surprised with wide eyes.
But she quickly adjusted her state and waved her hand with a smile.
“No… nothing, I was just surprised that someone would take the offerings?”
“Yeah… There are all kinds of people these days, and there’s no surveillance at the back. Ah, whatever, anyway, no matter how many offerings there are, the deceased can’t eat them, so what’s the difference whether they’re there or not.”
Can’t eat?
I don’t think so!
Lin Yueye wanted to cry but had no tears, glaring at Yuebing who was sitting cross-legged on the ground, eating cake with a face full of happiness.
The cat girl noticed the gaze, perhaps because she was happy from eating, and flashed a brilliantly radiant smile at Lin Yueye.
【Do you want some too? You can only have one bite, okay?】
Do I want some?
I want to eat you right now, you despicable cat girl! Do you know that what you’re stealing now is my offering!
No, no, no… she doesn’t know, she’s just a cat, it’s not worth getting angry at her.
Lin Yueye took a deep breath to adjust her inner grief and anger, trying her best to calm her thoughts.
Suddenly, she felt her hand being gripped tighter.
“Eh?”
Turning her head, deep dark eyes were already close at hand.
Pressure!
“By the way… Yahan hasn’t been saying anything strange to Yueye recently, has she?”
“Strange things…? No… not at all.”
“Really?”
Keeping a straight face without a change in heartbeat was Lin Yueye’s forte.
She swallowed and reluctantly nodded.
She might have indeed said some strange things… but I can’t possibly admit anything to you.
Xia Mujin stared into Lin Yueye’s eyes, almost as if trying to peek into the depths of her soul.
After a while, she relaxed again, followed by a sigh.
“Ah… that’s good. I don’t know what’s wrong with Yahan, she’s always been advising me, saying not to cause trouble for you, Yueye, but I just want to be friends with you, you know? Yahan wasn’t like this before… she went abroad to study and came back all stiff and serious, it’s really boring. If she had said something strange to Yueye, making you misunderstand me, that would have been troublesome. Well, it’s good that she didn’t say anything.”
“It feels like… Classmate Mujin and Teacher Luo don’t get along very well?”
“Don’t get along? Hahaha, not at all, we get along very well! After all, we’re childhood playmates~”
“Huh?”
I don’t see it that way.
You’re always complaining about her, and Teacher Luo doesn’t seem very friendly towards you either.
Rather than playmates, you seem more like archenemies?
Perhaps not wanting Lin Yueye to have any doubts about this, Xia Mujin turned her head and gave her a bitter smile, placing one hand on the glass. Then, looking down at Luo Yahan who had returned to the front desk from the back, she tilted her head, letting her black hair slide off her shoulder, and explained a bit to Lin Yueye.
“Yahan is a true genius… Hehe, Yueye, let me tell you a secret~ Although Yahan is two years older than me, she was a timid crybaby when we were little. She would always hide behind me at the slightest thing, not at all like an older person.”
“Really…? But Teacher Luo looks so reliable.”
This statement was completely beyond Lin Yueye’s expectations. She couldn’t imagine that ice-cold girl having the appearance Xia Mujin described when she was young.
“That’s why I say Yahan is becoming less and less cute!”
Xia Mujin nodded with absolute certainty, her expression full of reminiscence and dissatisfaction.
She squinted her eyes, looking at the ice-blue figure directing the maids to work in an orderly manner on the first floor.
As her eyes as dark as the night slowly opened, she said quietly.
“But as you can see, due to some uncontrollable reasons, Yahan now needs to work for the Xia family. Teaching is her hobby, but if we’re talking about her main job, the work here takes priority. She’s an excellent head maid of the Xia family… top-notch abilities, if it weren’t for her, the logistics of the Xia family would probably be in a mess. Oh my… but this might also be the reason why she dislikes me so much now?”
“The reason… is it?”
“Yeah, after all, suddenly changing from childhood playmates to subordinates, from equal friends to master and servant, Yahan isn’t the type to yield, so that’s probably why she’s always at odds with me? I can understand, but I don’t mean to look down on her, you know? Hahaha, to be honest, my father and mother instructed her to keep an eye on me, I’m even a bit afraid of her.”
