Chapter 35: Whisper

***

Looking around, all was sorrow.

If you spoke of the decor at the Xia family mansion today, it was quite desolate.

Along the tall fence hung strips of white paper and flowers, with elegiac couplets fluttering in the autumn wind.

The arriving guests, without exception, were dressed in black and white attire, expressing their condolences to the departed soul.

But…

That was how they looked after entering the mansion!

Before entering, those distinguished guests invited in twos and threes, though wearing white flowers, could hardly conceal their smiles. They chatted animatedly, taking advantage of this rare opportunity to discuss business and opportunities. Hardly anyone mentioned the Xia family’s deceased eldest son, even though this was the most glorious moment of his life.

If someone did bring him up, it was never with kind words, inevitably leading to a few jokes.

“They only found him after all these years… You could say this child was quite unfortunate. Have you heard how the Xia family’s young master passed away?”

“You don’t know? Starved to death, of course. Ate something he shouldn’t have, poisoned himself. He had just died when the Xia family found him. Good grief! I’m telling you the truth, don’t laugh. If we’re being honest, he was a pitiful soul, but this way of dying is really…”

“Hey, yes, yes… Respect the dead, respect the dead. Once we go through that door, we can’t show any smiles. We’re just here to make an appearance, you know. The Xia family would be annoyed to see us otherwise.”

“Exactly, and besides, a smile might be heard by the vengeful spirit. How harmful would that be? Haha, just kidding, just kidding.”

“……”

The two wealthy ladies walked towards the entrance, still laughing and chatting.

Left behind at the roadside was a silver-haired girl who had overheard this conversation.

With trembling hands, she led a cat girl.

Go… go through that door without smiling, or the vengeful spirit might hear?

How about I do you a favor? You don’t need to go in, just say it here, and ghosts and spirits will hear you loud and clear!

I really want to curse you all!

“Ah… Yuebing, I feel so sad.”

“Who wouldn’t be? Someone’s asking for a slap in the face.”

“I’m not talking about you… Didn’t you hear them laughing at me, calling me a starved ghost?”

“No way, who could eat more than you? Even expired pork would avoid you… Ow!”

“Can’t that little mouth of yours say anything nice?!”

Lin Yueye pinched Yuebing’s cute face, full of collagen, and stretched it from side to side, making her small frame sway back and forth.

She stopped short, only indulging in this outburst because there were few passersby. After all, to others, Lin Yueye appeared to be having a fit at thin air.

Sigh…

After composing herself, little Yueye’s mental state also stabilized.

Forget it, when you’re alive, you can’t expect anything from others, let alone when you’re dead.

Unless it’s your own family matters, how can you expect others to shed tears and mourn for you? The fact that they know to limit their mockery is already giving you face.

You can’t count on outsiders, but at least your own family should be able to empathize…

“Ah! There you are! Classmate Yueye! Over here, over here!”

“Hm?”

Wow, it’s Classmate Xia Mujin, who, upon finding her, was calling out and waving in her direction.

Look at our own family member, smiling so brightly and charmingly on this day of mourning.

Today, Xia Mujin wore a pure black dress with some simple lace trim, matching black socks and medium-heeled shoes. Her black hair cascaded down her shoulders as she raised her hand, a white flower pinned to her chest. Even without adornment, her outstanding qualities and flawless jade-like beauty were hard to conceal, truly bewitching.

Lin Yueye felt like crying but had no tears. However, she still had to force a reluctant smile and stiffly raise her hand to return Xia Mujin’s greeting.

But who knew…

She came running over directly!

Huh?!

Her heeled shoes tapped out a rhythmic beat on the ground, and within a few steps, the fragrance of flowers arrived.

Xia Mujin didn’t care about the coming and going of guests outside. She was like mountain temple peach blossoms eagerly awaiting the April winds, rushing straight towards Lin Yueye. Without a word, she wrapped both arms around her elbow.

The sensation of her chest pressing against her arm at zero distance startled Lin Yueye. People always need some time to process new experiences they encounter for the first time in their lives.

But Xia Mujin didn’t seem to want to give her this moment of pause.

Her ink-black pupils burst forth with grand brilliance, a restrained smile of joy climbing to her brows.

“Classmate Yueye really came! I’m so happy, I thought you would surely change your mind!”

“I… I’m sorry, is it wrong for me to come?”

“How could it be wrong? Come, come, I’ll take you in… Hm? I feel like I just bumped into something?”

“Did you…? No… I don’t think so?”

As Xia Mujin looked around in confusion, Lin Yueye also deliberately glanced around, pretending not to know anything.

But in fact, she could see everything.

Yuebing was just sent flying by you!

At this moment, Yuebing had just gotten up from the ground, dizzy and disoriented. Her gaze was locked onto that Xia Mujin-branded bulldozer. With her little tiger teeth bared, looking both fierce and cute, if it weren’t for the heavenly realm’s rules against revealing oneself, she would have surely bitten her!

Xia Mujin only looked around briefly before withdrawing her gaze and dismissing her confusion.

When people have more important matters at hand, they don’t have the leisure to waste time on things they’re not interested in.

She held Lin Yueye’s arm more tightly, black and silver hair intermingling at close proximity. The stronger pressure of her soft mounds made little Yueye want to back away as if electrified, but Xia Mujin would immediately press close again. She looked like a clingy girlfriend, but only Lin Yueye could feel the force behind it — she seemed to fear that she might run away!

“Never mind that, let’s go, Classmate Yueye~”

“Okay… but Classmate Mujin, could you loosen your grip a bit…? It hurts a little, and… I won’t run away…”

In fact, Lin Yueye was just making a request. Her body was unimaginably fragile, feeling discomfort from even the slightest pressure, let alone Xia Mujin gripping her arm with such force, smiling but clearly harboring ill intentions!

But this “negotiation” from Lin Yueye’s perspective looked like “begging” in Xia Mujin’s eyes.

Pitifully delicate, seemingly about to shatter at the slightest touch, with a soft light flickering in those crimson eyes — enough to simultaneously evoke humanity’s most primitive protective instincts and desire to conquer.

This made the young lady of the Xia family catch her breath.

Even her wrist movement almost lost its strength.

But before the red glow could creep up her cheeks, Xia Mujin’s action of re-embracing Lin Yueye’s arm became even more intense.

“No way…”

Xia Mujin leaned forward, maintaining a smile that outsiders could see, but actually whispering close to Lin Yueye’s ear.

Her voice was sweet, but to Lin Yueye, it sounded like a demon’s whisper, each word stabbing at her heart, making it tremble.

“Classmate Yueye came out of kindness to mourn and send off my poor brother… didn’t you? My home might be a bit big, and if I don’t guide you properly… you might get lost, you know?”
