Chapter 33: Chance Encounter

***

“Yiahh! Why do I have to come along too! I’m not fully awake!”

“Shh…! Don’t talk, do you really want me to face the unknown storm alone? I know you’re about to say you don’t mind, so I’ll answer for you, no, you do mind.”

On the first city bus of the morning, Lin Yueye dragged her family (referring to Yuebing) along.

After riding the subway for a few stops, they transferred to the bus station for a direct route. It didn’t waste much more time than taking a taxi.

On the way to the Xia family mansion, Lin Yueye checked the map app. Taking a taxi directly would cost about 70 yuan, but there was a public transportation option that took about the same time. She wouldn’t make such a foolish decision to spend so much money, even if it meant walking a bit more. Bringing Yuebing, who could turn invisible, saved the fare for one person. She was a money-saving, thrifty cat.

Arriving early, the morning bus wasn’t very crowded. Yuebing was drowsy, her body swaying left and right with the “creaky” motion of the bus, rocking back and forth.

Logically, after last night’s struggle with Yuebing for territory, Lin Yueye’s mental state shouldn’t have been very energetic either.

But the problem was, she couldn’t help but be alert now.

As for the reason…

Little Yueye’s shocked peripheral vision drifted to the seat beside her.

Blue hair in a single ponytail, cold ice-blue eyes, holding a magazine, with a blue leather bag slung across her shoulder.

Isn’t this Teacher Luo Yahan?!

What a coincidence that you’re also taking this bus!

Seeing a teacher outside of school is an awkward thing, but their eyes had already met, so running away was impossible.

There was no choice. Out of politeness, Lin Yueye had to sit in the empty seat next to Luo Yahan, and as soon as she sat down, she became troubled.

She wanted to ask about the meaning of those hints during yesterday’s class, but Luo Yahan clearly didn’t want to explain.

What… what should she say? Is it okay to not say anything? Should she have Yuebing turn into a cat to entertain her?

It’s so painful, so suffocating!

“So you came after all.”

“Eh?”

Unexpectedly, it was Luo Yahan who first broke the stiff atmosphere.

She didn’t close the magazine in her hand.

While flipping through it, she continued what she had just said.

“This bus, you’re also going to the Xia family mansion?”

“Mm… yes, so Teacher Luo is also…?”

“Yes, sigh.”

Sighing for some unknown reason, Luo Yahan closed the magazine cover and put it in her bag.

Taking advantage of her finally putting down what was in her hand, Lin Yueye said what she had been wanting to say all along.

“So… does Teacher Luo usually do some part-time work over there? Last time at the rental apartment, I saw you seemed to arrive with Classmate Xia?”

“You can understand it that way.” Luo Yahan placed both hands on top of her leather bag, tilting her head to look at Lin Yueye with a tone still terrifyingly calm, “I’ve known that Xia Mujin girl since she was little. When I have nothing to do, I go to her house to help out, like today, there are some trivial matters.”

“I see… Oh right, what you said to me in class yesterday, what exactly was…”

“I was just talking to you about the quadrant symbol problem. What, have you already figured out yesterday’s problem?”

“……”

You see.

Lin Yueye wanted to take advantage of the conversation to ask all her questions at once, but unfortunately, Teacher Luo clearly didn’t want to talk about this.

If she wanted to say it, there would have been no need for such a roundabout way of speaking yesterday.

Feeling slightly disappointed, Lin Yueye noticed Teacher Luo’s attire today.

It wasn’t the maid outfit or teacher’s uniform she had seen before, but a black fitted dress that complemented her nearly perfect figure. In the pocket of the dress, the corner of a white flower could be faintly seen, presumably to be pinned on later.

Lin Yueye was very clear about what business she had at the Xia family today.

This genius young teacher was probably also going to pay her last respects to Lin Yueye’s past self.

Alright then.

Perhaps noticing the observing gaze, Luo Yahan closed her eyes to rest, asking in a low voice.

“Miss Yueye, you seem to have some questions.”

“Ah… no… I was just a bit curious… Teacher Luo and Classmate Xia are old acquaintances, and Classmate Xia’s family is so wealthy… Teacher Luo is so capable, I thought you wouldn’t usually take the bus?”

“From an energy-saving and economical perspective, public transportation is always the affordable and efficient choice. Besides, how wealthy Xia Mujin’s family is has nothing to do with me, right?”

“Teacher is right…”

After thinking for a moment, Luo Yahan half-opened her eyes, seemingly considering any errors in her words.

“Of course, saying public transportation is efficient only applies when it’s not crowded, like now.”

“……”

How can you say such deadpan things as if you’re telling cold jokes!

Lin Yueye smiled bitterly a few times, once again falling into the awkward situation of not knowing what to say.

It would take about 20 more minutes to reach their destination.

Turning her head, she saw that Yuebing was already asleep, sleeping like a dead cat.

As for the questions she wanted to ask Luo Yahan, they all involved Teacher Luo’s privacy. If Teacher Luo didn’t want to talk about it, it would be quite impolite for her to ask.

Staying silent until they reached their destination was also an option.

But Lin Yueye happened to have a question she wanted to ask the teacher.

“Teacher Luo, do you have a moment? I’d like to… consult you about something.”

“Teaching, educating, and resolving doubts are a teacher’s responsibilities. However, if you’re asking about subjects outside of mathematics, I may not be able to help you much.”

Is she hinting that I shouldn’t ask about the Xia family matters…

It doesn’t matter. Lin Yueye had already decided to ask Xia Mujin about many things today, so she didn’t intend to say much here.

What she wanted to ask about had nothing to do with the Xia family, but another rather perplexing matter.

— About the 【Mengyu】 she had come across on her phone last night.

Mengyu had sent another message in the morning asking if she had watched the anime she recommended. Lin Yueye actually thought this was quite inconsiderate. The previous Lin Yueye’s mental state was so unstable, yet you keep recommending depressing anime and persistently asking about it. Aren’t you afraid she might really break down on the spot?

Lin Yueye almost pressed the delete friend button in the morning, but considering it was a friend the previous Lin Yueye hadn’t deleted for five years, she reluctantly held back.

But this sense of confusion left her feeling uneasy.

Luo Yahan was a genius, with a resume that left people astonished.

This was a rare opportunity, and Lin Yueye wanted to hear a genius’s perspective, to see if it would be any different.

“I have a friend.”

“Lin Yueye, you have a friend now?”

“……”

Teacher Luo, please don’t attack me directly, I’ll really cry!

Lin Yueye coughed lightly twice to readjust her thoughts and continued asking.

“I… I used to have a friend who said that someone would always add fuel to the fire when she was feeling down, inappropriately telling her sad stories, very inconsiderate. Teacher Luo, what do you think about this situation… should this kind of friend be kept?”

“Let me confirm.” Luo Yahan’s cold eyes moved, listening patiently before nodding and saying, “You’re saying that your friend’s friend, instead of cheering her up when she was sad, tried to induce her to become even sadder, is that right?”

“Yes, don’t you also think this behavior is particularly excessive?”

“From a general perspective, it is indeed inappropriate. People have limits to what they can bear when in pain, and exceeding that limit can easily lead to breakdown.”

“Right…”

Originally thinking that Teacher Luo Yahan had already given her conclusion, Lin Yueye decided she would delete 【Mengyu】 as a friend later, to prevent this person from continuing to ask about her anime watching progress.

However.

Luo Yahan put her hand to her chin, pondering for a moment.

Then she raised her head slightly, her eyes, beautiful like ice crystals, reflecting Lin Yueye’s confusion.

“But there are always exceptions. Before discussing this issue, what I want to know is, has this friend of yours ever cried when she was sad? Or rather, is she used to shedding tears when she’s upset?”
