Chapter 24: Resentment

***

Working hard for a lifetime, and in the end wanting to see how one passes away, is that too much to ask? Sob.

But as painful as it is to say, Lin Yueye had no standing to attend her own funeral.

The current me is not the past me, completely unrelated, there’s no reason to go even if I wanted to.

No reason to go… even if I wanted to?

Wait.

Little Yueye was originally regretful about this, but after being stunned for a moment, she suddenly grabbed the rope beside her and let out an exclamation.

“Yuebing! I think I know how to proceed from here!”

“Meow?!”

Yuebing, why did your body tremble and your fur stand on end?

It turns out, that wasn’t a rope, it was Yuebing’s tail.

“Sorry… but why do you always convulse like this? Had a stroke?”

“Still not letting go of my tail?!”

“?!”

Little Yueying looked at the bright red claw mark on the back of her hand, puzzled.

It’s not like I squeezed it hard again, what a petty cat.

But this didn’t dampen Lin Yueye’s excitement after discovering a “new world”!

The silver-haired, stunningly beautiful girl clenched her fists. Since transmigrating into this body until now, her eyes had never sparkled with such clarity of understanding as they did at this moment.

“I think I finally understand completely now, you know what, Yuebing? In my past life, I’ve already proven one thing with my life: even if you’re sincere and honest, even if you’re diligent and hard-working, without opportunities and background, it’s impossible to turn your life around!”

“So?” The cat girl hugged her tail and patted it, pouting as she recited robotically.

“So! If you encounter an opportunity and can seize it immediately, that’s what makes a wise person. You saw it today too, right? Let’s not worry about what Xia Mujin’s purpose is, but she definitely has the ability to make my life carefree at school, and she can indeed help us with our urgent financial needs. As long as we don’t get ourselves too involved and control her weird temperament, isn’t it all benefit without any harm?”

“Oh my, look at your wooden head, you’ve finally understood the importance of cozying up to a rich lady?”

“Don’t put it so crudely, I’m just being practical. We’re really struggling at this stage, so we need to use social wisdom reasonably, you know, social wisdom.”

“Social wisdom, what’s the specific translation for that?”

“Getting closer to her appropriately, there’s no need to deliberately avoid a chance to turn our lives around when it comes.”

“So what do you humans commonly call getting closer to rich girls like this?”

“Cozying up to a rich lady…?”

“See, we’ve come full circle, haven’t we?”

Hmm?

If you insist on putting it that way, it might indeed be so, but Lin Yueye had no intention of living off someone else. She just wanted to gain some resources through “socializing”, which ultimately still relies on her own mouth, so it’s still self-reliance!

It’s impossible to directly agree to Xia Mujin’s yet-to-be-revealed “conditions”. If the previous Lin Yueye was afraid, then the other party must have proposed some unequal cooperation that she couldn’t accept.

From Xia Mujin’s gaze, it was also evident that her intentions now were impure.

What Lin Yueye sought was the possibility of becoming “true friends” with the other party, changing her impure thoughts, and becoming friends who could truly support each other!

If the other party could sincerely want to lend a hand without ulterior motives, wouldn’t that be the first shot fired in turning around Lin Yueye’s miserable life?

I’m sorry, my former little sister, I don’t mean to take advantage of you. It’s just that your big brother is really at his wits’ end now, and can’t just live in this rental apartment with a stupid cat waiting to die.

To become friends, you have to start with understanding.

And now, there’s an opportunity to understand the other party a little better.

“That is, my funeral.”

“Ugh, human, you’re talking creepy, are you going to commit suicide again?”

“Don’t say such unlucky things, I’m talking about another funeral.”

Ignoring this stupid cat, Lin Yueye picked up her phone again, staring at Xia Mujin’s chat box.

Making a brave decision.

Heh… Didn’t you say you’d give me “trouble” in a few days?

Rather than waiting for death knowing the result, it’s better to take the initiative.

It had been a long time since Lin Yueye had been so serious about something.

She even felt that sending a message would seem too casual, so she didn’t know what got into her, maybe it was the adrenaline rush, but she actually used her naturally soft and weak voice to send Xia Mujin a voice message.

“Are you there?”

“I am.”

“Yuebing, I wasn’t talking to you.”

Fortunately, she hadn’t sent the voice message yet, otherwise she’d have to explain what this suddenly appearing silly creature was.

Pressing the microphone button again, this time without testing, she freed one hand to cover Yuebing’s mouth and started speaking directly.

“Thank you again for the red envelope you sent earlier. Classmate Xia Mujin, do you have time now? I’d like to ask about something. That is, when exactly is your brother’s funeral? May I ask if outsiders are allowed to pay respects, and if someone like me… could attend?”

The last sentence was spoken with a bit of inferiority. Lin Yueye didn’t mean to, but she suddenly thought of Xia Mujin’s status, so naturally had such concerns.

Originally, she thought after sending the voice message, it would take some time to receive a reply.

But just as Lin Yueye was about to try to overcome her embarrassment and take a shower…

The ringtone suddenly sounded from the phone she had just placed on the table.

Lin Yueye looked down in surprise, only to see the message box covered by Xia Mujin’s “desert sunset” profile picture.

— The other party had sent a video call request.

Thump.

Her heart skipped a beat, or rather, stopped for half a beat.

Lin Yueye picked up the phone tremblingly, hesitating as she looked at the options to answer or reject.

She was indeed caught up in the heat of the moment now.

But sending a voice message was already her limit.

Naturally, Lin Yueye pressed “reject call”.

Then, it was a race against time.

The “other party is typing” prompt lit up in the upper left corner of the message box. Before Xia Mujin could send another message, Little Yueye typed and sent a message at the fastest speed of her life.

【Just finished showering, not dressed, not convenient for video call.】

The “other party is typing” disappeared.

However…

— The other party sent a video call request.

“Huh?”

— The other party canceled the video call request.

From sending the request to canceling it was very quick, not giving Lin Yueye any time to think.

The message typed by the other party appeared on Lin Yueye’s screen again.

【Sorry, pressed the wrong button.】

This was the first message, and before Lin Yueye could say it’s okay, the other party demonstrated typing speed far surpassing Lin Yueye.

【I heard your voice message. I’ll let my father know, Classmate Yueye can definitely come too, there’s no rule that only family members can attend a funeral. But Classmate Yueye, may I ask a question off-topic?】

The next message came a bit slower.

As if the other party was carefully choosing her words.

Finally, it wasn’t in text form.

Instead, she sent Lin Yueye a voice message.

Lin Yueye played it on speaker and heard Xia Mujin’s voice, tinged with some coldness and pressure, coming from the speaker.

“Forgive me for being blunt, Classmate Yueye, whether it was at school today or just now, why are you so concerned about my brother’s affairs?”

Uh…

Lin Yueye had no evidence.

But she felt that in the tone of this message — there was quite a bit of resentment.

Thank you for reading. I’m sorry to say this, but I may have to drop this novel. It’s a good story, but it remains unpopular and has been for a long time. I suppose tearjerker dramas aren’t to everyone’s taste. If you enjoy the story, please help by giving it a good rating and writing a review on Novel Updates.
