Chapter 18: Unable to Refuse

***

“Why is she back… Wasn’t she supposed to have dropped out?”

“I don’t know… Should we tell the teacher?”

“Let’s not get involved… It’s kind of scary.”

Second year of high school, Elite Class 1.

This was the class for the top 60 students with the best grades in the year.

Just as Lin Yueye had expected, she really used to be a top student.

After entering the classroom, she didn’t say anything, but walked around the room as if nothing had happened — just to see which of the empty seats had textbooks with her name on them, which should be her seat.

Luckily, she easily found the seat near the back row, with the desk and chair neatly arranged, and every book labeled with the name 【Lin Yueye】. The girl randomly pulled out a textbook and began to flip through it, ignoring everyone else.

— After all, having stayed up late, her spirits weren’t exactly high. Her eyes were still beautiful, but showed signs of fatigue.

Moreover, after seeing the “Pay Attention to Food Safety” slogan earlier, asking her to smile would be as impossible as trying to pluck a star from the sky. The fact that she wasn’t wailing loudly was already showing great restraint.

But perhaps it was because of this slight weariness that she was able to calm down and faintly hear the discussions among her classmates in the noisy classroom.

Heh.

Why don’t they just say I’m doing some indecent part-time job?

The reason is simple.

When a person who has been weak and unable to speak up for years finally dares to choose death, the nature of many things changes.

It’s quite sad to say, but that’s how people are. Lin Yueye came back from the brink of death — she really did jump, no joke — and so no one wanted to be the first to push her off the cliff again. No one wanted to be a “murderer.”

It wasn’t out of sympathy, just fear of causing trouble.

The girl sitting in front, turned her head back several times but hesitated and turned back. If she could change seats, she probably would have run away already.

【Hehe, Lin Yueye, you’re such a heartthrob.】

Yuebing sat on the edge of the seat that Lin Yueye had cleared a little space for, pressing close to her body and smiling. Her divine power was really convenient; even without speaking, she could transmit her voice directly into Lin Yueye’s mind. The little cat girl called this 【mental transmission】.

“Being sarcastic, aren’t you?” Lin Yueye snorted with a laugh, “Let me tell you, at least for now, absolutely no one will bother me. They’re all afraid of getting involved. I’m a real time bomb now, super scary.”

【You seem proud of it.】

“What else can I do? Wait… didn’t you run out of divine power? Where did this mental transmission come from?”

【Huh? I slept well yesterday, so I recovered a bit of power!】

“Really?! That’s great, Yuebing. Quick, investigate why Xia Mujin had that attitude towards me yesterday!”

【Ah…? Didn’t I just use it up?】

“Where did you use it?”

【Mental transmission, of course. I’m talking right now, aren’t I? Can you hear me?】

“You really know how to use your divine power on the handle of the knife. Sometimes I really want to have a fierce fight with you.”

One human and one cat chatted freely behind the textbook, completely unaware.

—The classroom suddenly fell silent.

When she realized this situation, Lin Yueye thought the teacher had arrived.

But when she looked up…

She saw again that figure that made her frown involuntarily, pushing open the classroom door, carrying a bag, and stepping in slowly.

The bell tied to the bag jingled once, sounding particularly clear in the gradually quieting classroom.

Ink-splashed shadows, lotus blooming with each step.

It was the girl Lin Yueye had seen at home yesterday.

The young lady of the Xia family, Xia Mujin.

As soon as she arrived, the classroom fell into a dead silence. It wasn’t the same kind of silence that occurred when Lin Yueye arrived, but another kind of silence that arose out of “awe.”

Xia Mujin seemed to have developed a certain habit.

— After entering, she first glanced at the seat in the back row.

To be specific, it was around Lin Yueye’s seat.

Lin Yueye observed her movements through the corner of the book with her peripheral vision. Obviously, when Xia Mujin saw that someone was actually sitting there today, a hint of surprise appeared on her face.

Heh, surprise is useless. I’m definitely safe now.

When you found me alone in the rental room, you could do whatever you wanted. You could even beat me and no one would know. But here, with so many people around, you surely wouldn’t want to bother with me, right?

The higher one’s status, the more they care about reputation. Who would want to get too involved with someone who attempted suicide? That would be like drawing fire to oneself, unnecessarily inviting scandal.

But…

Lin Yueye’s hand holding the textbook suddenly trembled.

【Human… it looks like she’s walking towards you?】

“Are you serious… No way… Listen, Yuebing, be prepared this time… When it’s crucial, you need to scratch her.”

【……】

Yuebing?

Don’t just stop talking when your mental transmission runs out of divine power at the critical moment! You still have a mouth, don’t you?!

There was no time left to communicate with her feline teammate.

Because under the astonished gazes of the whole class, Xia Mujin had already walked to Lin Yueye’s side.

She smiled, patiently looking down at little Yueye who had her head buried in the textbook, and said gently.

“Classmate Yueye, you’ve come back to school. As the class monitor and student council president, I’m sincerely happy about this.”

“Mm…”

Nodding perfunctorily and very reluctantly moving the book away from her face, Lin Yueye’s gaze once again met those deep eyes as dark as a cool night.

I get it.

Judging by her words just now, bringing up her positions as class monitor and student council president, she wants to use me to boost her reputation, to reinforce her reliable image in front of the classmates, right?

As expected.

After all, Lin Yueye had never had any expectations for anything to begin with.

But still, she felt a kind of inexplicable desolation in her heart.

The whole class seemed to be on the other side of a wall.

While she was buried alone on this side.

In her past life, although she had no friends either, she was too busy rushing about to pay attention to these things, so it didn’t feel this obvious.

And the previous 【Lin Yueye】 probably faced this kind of situation and sadness every day at school.

But… Lin Yueye suddenly felt like there was a rustling sound coming from her collar.

Snapping out of her jumbled thoughts, Lin Yueye looked down and was surprised to find Xia Mujin adjusting the bow at her collar.

“It’s tied a bit crookedly…? Although it doesn’t violate school rules, Classmate Yueye is so pretty, even the details should match up to you.”

“?”

Not surprisingly, Lin Yueye heard gasps and whispered discussions of surprise from around her. Probably no one could have imagined that the most prestigious young lady Xia in the class would personally help someone fix their attire. This was something that had never happened before.

— After all, in everyone’s eyes, although Xia Mujin wasn’t cold, she was generally the type who wouldn’t talk to people unless there was work to be done. Her personality tended to be aloof, giving people a sense of high pressure, like “don’t bother me unless it’s necessary.”

It’s normal for them to gasp.

Yuebing, you don’t need to follow suit and gasp too! Why do you have to imitate everything?!

After a simple adjustment, Xia Mujin hung her bag on the edge of Lin Yueye’s desk, politely asking her “You don’t mind, do you?”

Naturally, there was nothing to mind about that.

But Xia Mujin’s next words left Lin Yueye completely bewildered.

“So if Classmate Yueye has time now… could you come out with me for a moment? I have some things I’d like to discuss with Classmate Yueye. Ah… everyone else, please review yesterday’s lesson? The teacher will be asking questions when they arrive.”

With just this one sentence, all the students in the class started flipping open their textbooks and reciting the ancient poems and texts they had studied before.

This was the best class, they were all top students, not afraid of the teacher’s questions.

— But, they would pay special attention to Xia Mujin’s words. Her meaning was clear: there’s no need to pay attention to what’s happening here, so no one would be so insensitive as to continue looking this way.

As for why it was like this…

When Lin Yueye sensed something wasn’t right and didn’t want to go out alone with her, so she tactfully asked this question, she understood.

“But… class is about to start, isn’t it…? Is it okay to go out now…”

“Regarding that, it’s fine,” Xia Mujin was smiling sweetly, but to Lin Yueye, it felt terribly cold, “Whether it’s me, or Classmate Yueye, or the subject teacher, I think… we shouldn’t lack this little bit of time, right?”

“……”

This… this is bad, what she’s saying makes so much sense, and it seems there’s no reason to refuse?

Whether it makes sense or not isn’t important.

What’s important is that she seems to really have power and influence!

Following the instinctive resistance of her soul, Lin Yueye wanted to continue making excuses.

But seeing Xia Mujin’s smile that showed no intention of giving up…

Little Yueye could only let out a plaintive sigh in the end, leading her cat girl, once again like a bullied child, following behind Xia Mujin as they walked out of the classroom through the back door…
