Chapter 14: What Does It Mean?
***
After the landlady entered the room, the door was never closed.
Lin Yueye didn’t know when that girl had come in, nor how much she had heard before offering to help scan and pay the rent.
But the only thing she knew was that, at first glance, you would truly be stunned by a beauty beyond natural scenery.
Lin Yueye had already been stunned by herself when looking in the mirror, but she didn’t expect to experience it a second time in such a short period.
The girl appeared to be about 1.7 meters tall, as she seemed slightly taller than Lin Yueye from a horizontal perspective. She wore the blue and white dress uniform of Qihai No.1 High School, her long black hair reaching down to her slender waist. Long black knee-high socks were stretched tightly over thighs without any excess fat, with a pair of small bows tied at the top. Her figure was so proportionate that it almost achieved the perfect harmony of the golden ratio.
Beneath her night-colored bangs were a pair of deep, clear ink-colored eyes that brought a cool breeze of a summer night with just one glance.
She held her bag in front of her with both hands, standing perfectly straight. Every smile and gesture exuded the demeanor of a well-bred young lady.
But Lin Yueye didn’t know why… she felt that this girl looked familiar, as if she had seen her somewhere before…?
Yuebing climbed onto Lin Yueye’s shoulder and, while the girl was confirming with the landlady if the rent payment was sufficient, chuckled softly.
“Hee hee hee… poor little thing who’s never been in love, how should I put it~ Are you mesmerized?”
“Be quiet, I’m thinking.”
“Thinking about what?”
“If she helps me pay, will she charge interest?”
“Oh my snow biscuit, no wonder you’ve never been in love.”
The girl seemed to have settled matters with the landlady in just a few words.
The landlady was very satisfied after receiving the money. After all, the tenants renting this apartment were not wealthy, and rent payments were often in arrears. This time the payment was so prompt!
After receiving the money, the landlady’s entire demeanor changed.
She turned back and cheerfully told Lin Yueye that someone would come to repair the floor in the afternoon, assuring her to live there without worry. She didn’t say much else before turning to leave, probably rushing off to collect rent from the next household. Such are the simple worries of a rent-collecting auntie.
As she closed the door behind her, the sound of the door frame clicking shut…
In the room, only the faint light filtered through the curtains, illuminating the narrow little room, brightening the girl’s ever-present smile and Lin Yueye’s slight bewilderment. Their gazes met in the air, without sparking any fireworks — because little Yueye immediately lowered her head in retreat!
Little Yueye only then realized the awkward situation.
Oh… oh no.
Don’t go, auntie!
How am I supposed to face this awkward situation alone if you leave?! I don’t know her! Although I don’t know you either!
But when the girl’s pleasant voice rang out without any delay.
Lin Yueye knew that what must be faced couldn’t be avoided.
“Classmate Yueye, long time no see. Well, it hasn’t been that long, less than a week…? Oh my… what an adorable cat, is it yours?”
“Um… her name is Yuebing, hello class monitor…”
Lin Yueye didn’t know how to address her, but the only information she had was the “class monitor” note in her contacts.
Hearing this title, the girl’s smile suddenly paused for a moment, but was quickly covered by a continued smile.
“Oh my… Classmate Yueye is still the same as before. We’re classmates, there’s no need to be so formal. You can just call me by my name. Come here, little Yuebing~ Oh… it doesn’t seem very interested in me, does it?”
Obviously, Yuebing was tired from its earlier performance, and since you didn’t bring it any snow biscuits, it naturally ignored you.
You want me to call you by your name?
The problem is, I don’t know your name!
Yuebing, do you know?
The cat let out a helpless meow on her shoulder, I’m just a cat now, I advise you not to expect too much from cats, okay?
Damn it.
Anyway, let’s start by thanking her for what she did earlier. Not knowing her name, I’ll find out when we get back to school. Don’t dwell on this now.
“Um… I’m sorry.”
“Hmm? Why are you apologizing?” The girl tilted her head in confusion.
“You just paid my rent for me. I’ll pay you back.”
After thinking for a moment, Lin Yueye’s soft gaze, which had been falling along with her silver hair, finally lifted slightly, meeting the girl’s eyes again from a weaker angle, adding to her previous promise to repay:
“But, it might take a few days.”
“……”
The girl seemed to fall silent for a moment.
— When Lin Yueye lowered her head to express gratitude, she thought she heard the sound of a deep breath.
Eh?
A deep breath?
When Lin Yueye found it strange and looked up, there was nothing unusual.
The girl was still smiling faintly and shaking her head gently, the small bell hanging on her phone jingling pleasantly.
“It’s alright, Classmate Yueye. You should know that these are just trivial matters. What you don’t know is that after the incident from the other day was reported to the school… I can’t speak for others, but at least for me, I was really worried. You didn’t reply to messages for so many days, I could only come to visit in person. I’m sorry for coming unannounced, it’s truly presumptuous of me.”
“It’s not…”
“Classmate Yueye, do you mind if I look around?”
“Please… feel free.”
Lin Yueye, with the cat on her shoulder, stepped aside to make an even narrower path in the already cramped space.
To be honest, she felt there was something odd about her conversation with this “class monitor.”
Were they friends before, the previous Lin Yueye and her? After all, she seemed genuinely concerned about her.
But if you say they were friends, her words seemed too cautious, as if they were unfamiliar.
“Is this where Classmate Yueye usually lives…?”
For the first time, the girl’s voice showed a ripple different from her previous calmness.
This ripple seemed to be a bit of sadness, and some kind of… pity?
She looked around at the walls that could be traversed in just three steps.
The cracked floor, the rusty doors and windows.
Lin Yueye remained silent.
Because she could see that this girl’s demeanor was out of place here, and she didn’t expect her to understand anything.
After all, she would probably soon say something like “the living conditions here are not good, why don’t you move to a better place?” – something akin to “why don’t you eat meat porridge,” right?
But strangely enough.
This girl didn’t say anything either.
Until she stood in front of Lin Yueye’s old wooden table and saw those medicine boxes scattered on the desk.
Evidently, the pretty face of the girl showed even more concern than before.
“Classmate Yueye, is your health… better than before?”
“Well… I still need to take medicine.” Lin Yueye was at least quite healthy until now, but with the medicine boxes right there, she couldn’t exactly say she was in perfect health, could she?
Hearing this, the girl’s eyes dimmed a bit, but then, as if attracted by something, she looked up towards Yueye’s neck.
Neck…?
At first, Lin Yueye didn’t know what was there, but when she also turned her gaze in the same direction as the girl’s…
— She instinctively raised her hand to cover the collar of her dress!
The movement was so abrupt that it even sent Yuebing tumbling onto the bed. The little cat grumbled as it walked to the side and curled up by the wall.
Lin Yueye belatedly realized what she had done.
But earlier she just felt… very upset.
Perhaps it was because the girl in front of her looked so kind, making Lin Yueye feel a bit relaxed, wanting to try and make friends with her, to escape her previous bad luck?
But when Lin Yueye discovered that the other was looking at the new clothing tag on her collar that she hadn’t cut off yet.
She probably knew that her idea of making friends might end before it even began.
【Haha! Ling Qingyue? You also got into Qihai No.1 High School? What a coincidence! We’ve been classmates for five years, from now on we’ll be best buddies!】
Once upon a time, the young girl believed that friendship wouldn’t be lost due to material things, that they were two unrelated matters.
Until she heard that the other person had privately complained and mocked one thing.
— Have you noticed? After five years, Ling Qingyue is still wearing the same old shoes from middle school.
A simple sentence.
But it was enough to leave a deep crack in the young girl’s heart.
Some heartaches are like sharp blades formed by a single sentence, incredibly hurtful.
Lin Yueye knew that what she was doing now was like hiding a guilty conscience, it was just that recalling some unpleasant memories made it hard for her to control herself.
Her lips trembled as she released her hand covering the tag and spoke softly.
“No… it’s not, I just bought a new piece of clothing yesterday… I forgot to cut off the tag, please don’t mind…”
“Yueye…”
“……”
Huh? Why suddenly drop the “classmate”?
There was no time for Lin Yueye to be puzzled and confused.
“From earlier, including how you address me, what do you mean by all this…?”
Looking up, she didn’t see mockery.
She only saw that the pain on the girl’s face was becoming increasingly difficult to conceal.
And for the first time, unlike her previous calmness, “anger” was revealed.
Without warning, she suddenly strode forward! Her steps quickened, the sound of the bell on her phone strap becoming incredibly intense.
“Do you think I would bully you like those damn people, look down on you?”
The girl’s floral scent became more prominent as she rapidly approached in the small space.
Lin Yueye didn’t know what had suddenly come over her, feeling a bit scared, she instinctively stepped back.
But there was a wall behind her.
There was nowhere to retreat.
