- Chapter 55 - The Feeling of Returning Home
“Just now, the Earthquake Bear broke through at Purple Radiance Mountain, and its energy leaked, getting detected by the Heavenly Pivot Array,” Su Yao reported. “After that, it got targeted by Green Hills Mansion. Due to the significant threat it poses, Green Hills Mansion is now fully mobilizing to hunt it down!”
Su Mu was shocked.
The Earthquake Bear, after all, was one of his loyal spirit beasts. He couldn’t just stand by and let something happen to it.
“Where is it now?” Su Mu asked.
“About a hundred miles from the Misty Forbidden Zone,” Su Yao replied.
Su Mu instantly realized how tricky the situation was. If the Earthquake Bear were within the Misty Forbidden Zone, everything would be manageable. But with the bear still a hundred miles away, there was no way Su Mu could reach it in time.
“Caw, caw, caw…”
A chorus of cawing echoed in the distance, catching Su Mu’s attention.
The Spirit Crows, now all at the second-tier, had become much stronger and faster. Perhaps they could reach the Earthquake Bear in time to assist.
“The bear is in danger; could you go and help it?” Su Mu transmitted his thoughts to the crows.
The Spirit Crows responded with enthusiastic caws, eager to help.
“Remember, your safety comes first. If you encounter danger, retreat immediately. Don’t take unnecessary risks,” Su Mu cautioned.
Compared to the Earthquake Bear, Su Mu valued the ten Spirit Crows even more. The bear had joined later, but the crows had been with him since they were born, and he had watched them grow.
On the ground, especially in the forest, the Earthquake Bear was nearly unbeatable. The real threat from Green Hills Mansion came from the aerial harassment. The humans had obtained many secret techniques from ancient ruins, allowing them to control flying creatures. These flying mounts, with their superior altitude, made it difficult for the bear to retaliate. The constant aerial attacks were wearing the bear down.
In the forest,
“Use Flame Arrow Talismans,” a commanding voice ordered from above.
In an instant, numerous talismans were activated, transforming into blazing arrows that rained down on the mountain.
Boom!
When one of the arrows struck a small hill, it shattered completely, leaving nothing but rubble.
The Earthquake Bear roared in fury. The humans used Flame Arrow Talismans primarily because of their long range, keeping the bear at bay. This strategy was slowly wearing the bear down, but it remained fierce and full of life due to its formidable defense and vitality.
Some of the human cultivators eyed the bear coldly. The more resilient it was, the more determined they became to kill it.
Suddenly, another barrage of Flame Arrow Talismans descended. But this time, when the arrows exploded, they released a strange black smoke along with the flames. This smoke was toxic, but not in the usual way. It specifically targeted the bear’s demonic energy, spreading through it to paralyze the bear’s body and consciousness.
Gradually, the Earthquake Bear’s movements became slower and more labored.
“Caw, caw, caw…”
At that moment, a series of loud caws pierced the air.
The humans looked up in shock to see ten enormous black crows flying toward them. Each crow was over six feet long, and they moved with terrifying speed.
The crows began to attack the airborne human cultivators, disrupting their previously untouchable position. One of the human riders, mounted on a white crane—a first-tier supreme-grade beast—was suddenly targeted by one of the crows. The crane had no chance to defend itself and was quickly brought down.
At Green Hills Mansion,
In the Heavenly Pivot Array’s central hub, Gao Siming and the other high-ranking officials were stunned. The appearance of these Spirit Crows was entirely unexpected.
Normally, avian and terrestrial beasts occupied different realms and wouldn’t collaborate. It was unthinkable that a group of Spirit Crows would come to the aid of a giant bear.
“How did these Spirit Crows suddenly appear and attack our flying riders?”
“This must be a coincidence. There’s no way crows would cooperate with a bear.”
“A coincidence? This is no coincidence. There’s something much more complex going on in the Ancient Wilderness Mountains.”
The officials argued heatedly, unable to reach a consensus.
But their debate didn’t last long. They soon saw two of the crows fly down to the bear’s side. The bear didn’t attack the crows, and the crows didn’t attack the bear. Instead, they interacted with surprising affection. One of the crows even perched on the bear’s shoulder.
The officials at Green Hills Mansion felt their understanding of the world being turned upside down.
“Something is seriously wrong with the Ancient Wilderness Mountains,” Gao Siming, who was not one to hesitate, quickly made a decision. “Order an immediate halt to the operation. All forces are to withdraw.”
If they were to continue hunting the bear, they needed to first understand what was happening. The Ancient Wilderness Mountains were starting to feel unfamiliar, and in such a situation, pushing forward could lead to greater losses.
A quarter of an hour later,
At the edge of the Misty Forbidden Zone,
The massive brown bear stared at the mist ahead, a look of excitement in its eyes. The sight of the mist gave it a sense of warmth and security. It seemed that as long as it reached the mist, all dangers would disappear, and it would finally be safe.
The recent experience of being hunted by humans had genuinely frightened the bear. If not for the timely intervention of the Spirit Crows, it feared it might have been killed. The humans were truly as terrifying as the Divine Tree had warned.
Whoosh!
A large white shadow suddenly appeared, pouncing on the bear.
Startled, the bear instinctively prepared to strike back, but as soon as it felt the familiar cold aura, it stopped.
“Stupid bear, you’re back,” a cheerful voice rang out.
The bear’s vision cleared, revealing the familiar form of a white python. For some reason, the bear’s nose tingled, and it felt an inexplicable sense of returning home. The white python before it was like the foolish yet endearing little brother waiting for it at home.
Though moved, the bear grumbled, “You dumb snake.”
However, instead of attacking, it walked alongside the white python into the depths of the Misty Forbidden Zone.
“Welcome back,” a voice greeted them.
After traveling about thirty miles, the bear and the white python encountered the Snow Spirit Mink. Soon after, they arrived at the foot of the giant ginkgo tree.
In front of the giant ginkgo tree,
A tiny Purple-Gold Mosquito was perched on a ginkgo leaf.
“Divine Tree, is that bear also one of our companions?” it asked curiously.
If anyone were present, they would be amazed to see a mosquito capable of speech.
Su Mu had noticed something unusual. As he gained more knowledge about the outside world, he understood more about the creatures under his command. He knew that not all second-tier beasts could speak. In fact, it was quite rare for a beast to speak clearly after advancing to the second tier. Most beasts only gained the ability to speak human language upon reaching the third tier.
But the beasts under his command were different. Aside from the naturally low-potential Spirit Crows, all the other beasts could speak.
Among them, the Earthquake Bear and other beasts hadn’t been able to speak before encountering him. Su Mu had reason to believe this change was due to him. It seemed that the Life Essence not only improved a creature’s cultivation potential but also enhanced its intelligence.
