- Chapter 9 - The Cannon Fodder He Cries Again
Xia Zhixu arrived at the dormitory door and heard voices and laughter coming from inside. He raised his hand and knocked on the door. The voices inside paused for a moment, then the commotion resumed.
Thinking that someone would come to open the door for him, Xia Zhixu stood at the door and waited for a while, but after waiting for a long time, no one came to open the door for him. Xia Zhixu couldn’t help but knock on the door again, but there was still no response from inside.
‘Could it be that the sound came from the next room?’
Xia Zhixu rummaged through his backpack for a while before finally finding the key. He unlocked the door and walked in, only to see all three of his roommates chatting inside.
The one by the door was sitting there cracking sunflower seeds.
The bed by the door belonged to Zhao Zihe. Xia Zhixu’s bed was behind the door, and the other two beds were on the same side as Zhao Zihe’s, belonging to Chen Mingyu, and on the same side as Xia Zhixu’s, belonging to Zhou Wen.
Zhao Zihe was the wealthiest ‘big brother’ in the dorm. Chen Mingyu and Zhou Wen followed Zhao Zihe around. It seemed that Zhao Zihe’s family had some connection with Jiang Minghui’s family.
In fact, Jiang Minghui and Xia Zhixu met through Zhao Zihe.
Before Jiang Minghui started pursuing Xia Zhixu, the relationships in the dormitory were tolerable. Although they didn’t interact much with Xia Zhixu, they didn’t openly target him either.
Shortly after the military training at the beginning of freshman year, it was Zhao Zihe’s birthday. He hosted a gathering and planned to take the entire dorm to a bar. Xia Zhixu initially didn’t want to go, but not wanting to be looked down on by his roommates, he went anyway.
They happened to run into Jiang Minghui, who was out with friends at the bar. Zhao Zihe went over to greet Jiang Minghui. Out of courtesy, Jiang Minghui joined the group for a drink, and that’s how he met Xia Zhixu. Soon after, he began pursuing Xia Zhixu.
Upon learning this, Zhao Zihe frequently spoke disrespectfully to Xia Zhixu, saying that he was unworthy of Jiang Minghui and that Jiang Minghui was merely playing around with him, always with a lofty, superior attitude. He even dragged the other two into isolating Xia Zhixu, taking every chance to belittle him.
Every time he saw someone give Xia Zhixu a gift, he would mock him with biting sarcasm.
After learning that Xia Zhixu had an ‘older brother’ who was a car mechanic, Zhao Zihe became even more snide. Yet, every time Jiang Minghui was around, he would pretend to be friendly and obedient with Xia Zhixu.
The original host assumed that Zhao Zihe looked down on him, which was why he acted that way.
But now, seeing Zhao Zihe again, he was suddenly reminded of someone from his previous world—his fiancé Lu Jingzhi’s secretary.
In front of Lu Jingzhi, the secretary was always polite and considerate, carefully tending to Lu Jingzhi’s mood. But the moment Lu Jingzhi wasn’t around, the secretary would say sharp remarks and pull all sorts of White lotus tactics to frame Xia Zhixu.
‘Aren’t Zhao Zihe and the secretary two of a kind?’
The secretary liked Lu Jingzhi and targeted him.
So, if the secretary targeted him out of jealousy, and Zhao Zihe was doing the same thing. So it can be concluded that… Zhao Zihe likes Jiang Minghui.
“Oh, isn’t this our Young Master Xia? You’re back already?” Zhao Zihe sneered at Xia Zhixu.
“Now that your mechanic brother isn’t holding you back, you think you can soar up to the branches and become a phoenix? Some people shouldn’t be too cocky.”
“Exactly, I don’t know how a grown man with working limbs can use such tactics to lure men and not feel ashamed.”
Zhou Wen chimed in immediately.
Zhao Zihe smiled disdainfully, clearly pleased with Zhou Wen’s words.
‘These kinds of trashy remarks are nothing compared to what that secretary used to say,’ Xia Zhixu thought.
The secretary would always speak in a condescending tone, “You’re not bad either, though you’re not very smart. Still, with your decent family background, it makes sense you could become Mr Lu’s fiancé… That’s probably the only value you have in this life. Be obedient, and you might still live comfortably. Don’t even think about coveting what doesn’t belong to you. But don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Mr Lu. He’s gotten used to my care, after all…”
“You have nothing to offer Mr Lu besides your status. There are plenty of pretty faces out there—you’re just a decorative vase with a bit of status. People should know their place; otherwise, they won’t even know how they end up dead.”
“Trying to win a man back through tears and tantrums to win back a man is the most pathetic thing you can do. Do you think you can take him away from me? The moment the scales tip my way, you’ve already lost.”
He would even say in front of Lu Jingzhi, “Mr Lu, Young Master Xia has such a good personality. He’s not petty. I actually like his easygoing personality. He speaks freely. I can’t do that. I always have to think about the company’s image…”
Just as he was about to stop reminiscing, Xia Zhixu realised that he actually didn’t find the secretary so repulsive after all. At least he wouldn’t say such low things.
Many words have the same meaning, but when the secretary says them, they sound completely different from when these people say them.
Xia Zhixu decided simply to block out their trash talk. His mouth wasn’t quick, and he still had half a semester left before he could move out…
Clearly, in this world, people still harbour prejudice against homosexuality, unlike his previous world, where same-sex marriage had long been legalised.
Yuan Bao clenched its tiny fist, pulled out the notes it had made and chukled.
‘Hehehe! It was time for its star performance!’
Yuan Bao, “Host, go up and curse them out.”
Xia Zhixu, “Curse them for what?”
Yuan Bao, “Lift your chin at a 45-degree angle, with three parts disdain and seven parts arrogance, and say, ‘Those with dirty minds see filth in everything.’”
Xia Zhixu tried lifting his chin.
Yuan Bao, “Yes, yes, that’s right! Just like that. Now look straight at Zhao Zihe.”
Xia Zhixu lowered his eyes to look at Zhao Zihe.
Zhao Zihe frowned.
Yuan Bao, “That’s the spirit! Quick, say the line!”
Xia Zhixu thought carefully and said, “People with dirty minds see filth in everything!”
Xia Zhixu’s voice was soft, which made it sound even more sarcastic.
Zhao Zihe saw the sarcasm in Xia Zhixu’s eyes.
‘What did that downward glance mean?’
‘How dare this poor loser look down on him?!’
Zhao Zihe sprang up from his seat like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, his anger boiling over like a feudal patriarch whose authority had been challenged.
He roared, “What do you mean, Xia Zhixu, you broke-ass loser? Who are you calling dirty-minded? Are you looking for a beating?”
His voice was so loud that Xia Zhixu instinctively shrank his neck, uncomfortably.
Yuan Bao looked at the furious Zhao Zihe acting so aggressively and wanted to rush out and slap him twice.
‘How dare he bully its host!! Doesn’t he know that its host is timid and a little crybaby?! So what if your voice is loud!!’ (▼ヘ▼#)
Xia Zhixu frowned, clenched his fists, and mustered his courage, feeling that he should clarify the situation, “I’ve already made things clear with Jiang Minghui that we won’t be together. I don’t think we’re compatible. If you like him, then pursue him. Don’t give me that attitude.”
Zhao Zihe froze, staring at Xia Zhixu in shock.
Zhou Wen and Chen Mingyu also looked at Xia Zhixu, faces full of disbelief.
‘That’s Jiang Minghui, ah! Xia Zhixu actually said he wouldn’t be with Jiang Minghui.’
