That smile was like a tiny hook, catching hold of Zhao Zihe’s heart while also making him intensely curious about what Xia Zhixu had said.

“What did he say? Could it be that Aunt Jiang found out and decided to forcibly separate a couple?”

“Could it be he’s fallen for someone else?”

“Which bastard is so bold as to steal him from Brother Jiang?”

“Neither,” Jiang Minghui said softly.

“He said that because of family circumstances, he almost couldn’t go to school. His previous boyfriend funded his education. But after arriving at university, he got dazzled by the glitz and glamour, became vain and had crooked thoughts. But after breaking up with his boyfriend, he came to his senses and realised he couldn’t live without his botfriend…”

Jiang Minghui’s words stunned the banterers into silence.

To be honest, though they were all good-for-nothings, they couldn’t help but feel a tinge of respect.

That answer was so straightforward that it left them speechless.

“…Well, this Xia Zhixu is… pretty honest, huh!”

One of them couldn’t help but exclaim.

Jiang Minghui’s eyes crinkled with laughter.

“Don’t you think this makes him even more likeable? Before, I just thought he was my type. Now, I feel like I’m genuinely falling for him.”

Having seen so many scheming people around him, Xia Zhixu’s sudden honesty only fueled his desire to conquer him even more.

Zhao Zihe clenched his fist abruptly, a flash of anger crossing his eyes.

‘So Xia Zhixu had a boyfriend after all. And yet he still provoked Jiang Minghui—isn’t this just eating what’s in the bowl while looking at what’s in the pot? And all that talk about not being able to leave his boyfriend? Definitely a ploy to get what he wants by pretending to back down. Absolutely!!’

‘That despicable person!…’

***

“La la la la…”

Xia Zhixu’s phone rang as its screen lit up. Seeing the name displayed, his eyes instantly brightened.

Song Qingchuan.

Song Qingchuan hadn’t intended to call Xia Zhixu. But remembering his pitiful expression when he left, and his unusually odd behaviour today, he made the call anyway.

The phone was answered almost instantly.

“Brother!!” Xia Zhixu’s voice rang out, brimming with surprise and excitement.

Song Qingchuan’s eyes softened slightly, his heart tingling with warmth. He glanced up at the streetlight that had suddenly illuminated the path. Night had fallen, yet the lamp glowed unusually bright, illuminating the road ahead.

“Mm!” Song Qingchuan murmured in response.

“Hehe, I was really good today…”

Xia Zhixu began recounting the day’s trivialities to Song Qingchuan, including his conversation with Zhao Zihe in the dormitory.

Walking back under the lamplight, a cool breeze blew past. Song Qingchuan patiently listened to Xia Zhixu’s chatter. The breeze brought an unprecedented sense of peace, finally giving Song Qingchuan a feeling of solid ground beneath his feet.

It was a strange sensation.

He had stood on the edge of a cliff, convinced he’d rot in the mud for the rest of his life. Even Xia Zhixu, whom he’d protected with his heart and soul since childhood, had abandoned him. Yet… beyond the cliff wasn’t a bottomless abyss, but… spring.

“…Hmph, I’m so smart! I knew he liked Jiang Minghui, but he wouldn’t admit it!” Xia Zhixu’s voice carried a hint of smugness.

“Yeah, you’re smart,” Song Qingchuan replied earnestly.

“Don’t even try to fool me. I’m coming to see you after class on Friday. You’re not allowed to hide from me!”

Xia Zhixu frowned, feigning sternness.

Unfortunately, his voice was soft and utterly harmless.

“Oh, and one more thing—I want to eat big shrimps this weekend.”

Xia Zhixu licked his lips, already craving them.

“Alright. It’s getting late. Get ready for bed soon,” Song Qingchuan said.

“Okay.”

Xia Zhixu reluctantly agreed. His chatter had already taken nearly half an hour, and Song Qingchuan must be exhausted after work.

After hanging up, Song Qingchuan glanced at the balance in his phone wallet and smiled wryly. He’d have to find a way to make some money soon. Otherwise, if the little crybaby didn’t get his big shrimps this weekend, he’d probably flood his room.

***

With classes in the morning, Xia Zhixu groggily climbed out of bed to wash up. When he grabbed his books and left the dorm, the other three roommates were still asleep.

In the original host’s memories, Zhao Zihe was the type to skip class too—telling him to attend might even anger him.

Xia Zhixu had no intention of skipping class. Since Song Qingchuan wanted him to study diligently, he would study diligently.

After breakfast, he arrived at the lecture hall just on time.

Xia Zhixu glanced at the time on his phone.

He didn’t even notice someone had stepped in front of him.

“Xia Zhixu.”

The familiar voice made Xia Zhixu instinctively lift his gaze, looking confused, staring ahead.

Upon recognising Jiang Minghui, Xia Zhixu unconsciously clenched his fists, silently encouraging himself on. Having encountered him so many times already, the initial fear had faded.

It was just that he still found it incredibly uncomfortable.

Jiang Minghui’s gaze was so warm it made Xia Zhixu uncomfortable, even slightly repulsed.

‘Clearly, he had already made it clear to Jiang Minghui, yet this Jiang Minghui still came to him! Couldn’t he just act as if he were dead? Wasn’t a qualified ex supposed to be dead?’

Watching Xia Zhixu’s ever-shifting expression, Jiang Minghui’s lips curved into his most charming, confident smile.

“You have an early class today, right? I brought you breakfast.”

With that, he pulled out the breakfast he held.

Unlike the usual plastic food bags, this breakfast was packed in an elegant paper box—clearly quite expensive.

“No, thank you. I can buy it myself,” Xia Zhixu hurriedly replied.

After a moment, he added, “If possible, I hope you won’t come looking for me anymore.”

Jiang Minghui froze slightly. He’d pursued many people before, showering them with extravagant gifts, and almost none had lasted long.

Delivering breakfast was a first for him—and his first attempt had ended in a complete failure.

“I know you already have someone you like, but you can’t stop others from pursuing you, can you? It’s just breakfast! I’m sure your boyfriend wouldn’t mind if he knew—after all, he can’t look after you at school!”

Jiang Minghui felt a bit annoyed, and in his speech, he unconsciously compared himself to Song Qingchuan.

“He wouldn’t even know if you were being mistreated at school. I think I’m the one who’s more suited for you…”

“How could you be like this?”

Before Jiang Minghui could finish, Xia Zhixu cut him off.

Jiang Minghui turned to Xia Zhixu, who looked puffed up with indignation, as if he’d committed some grave mistake.

“I was the one who went back on my word earlier. If you’re angry, you can scold me. Why are you talking about Song Qingchuan like that? I already said I don’t like you anymore! If you’re still upset, just hit me! I can buy my own breakfast! I don’t need your help!” Xia Zhixu said, pulling out his little frog wallet and opening it to show Jiang Minghui.

“I have money.”
