The car drove for a long time and the next stop was a big city. In addition to replenishing supplies, Luo Ning planned to find some clothes and seeds.
The city was filled with many zombies, almost clustered together. When they couldn’t avoid them, they had to get out of the car to clear a path. Mu Chengfeng’s powers had upgraded, allowing him to wield them with ease.
Black mist coiled in his palms like flames, eroding the masses of zombies. Occasionally, he would collect a few crystal cores that fell to the ground.
As the zombies pressed closer, Luo Ning suddenly sensed something was off. In the midst of the horde, he spotted a tall zombie carrying a little girl on its back. The girl was dressed in a dirty Lolita outfit, with two small braids. Her eyes were devoid of life, and her mouth was twisted into an inhuman grin, as if it had been forcibly ripped apart.
The appearance of the little girl was the most bizarre. It seemed she was controlling all the nearby zombies.
Luo Ning was astonished. Zombies had developed intelligence. He hadn’t expected this to be a psychic zombie. It was even harder to deal with.
The little girl was pulling at the threads in the air, trying to control the minds of several humans.
Chen Li felt dizzy and unconsciously moved forward, but Luo Ning managed to pull him back just in time. This zombie was skilled at weaving illusions. What Luo Ning saw suddenly transformed into a field of cotton candy. He wanted to move blankly, but the system spoke in his ear, like a thin membrane that could pop with a poke, and Luo Ning suddenly regained consciousness.
Mu Chengfeng’s will was strong. He wasn’t easily controlled. However, the little girl’s tricks angered him. He used the black mist to strangle the zombies in front of him and threw his knife straight at the little girl.
The girl’s pupils narrowed into slits, and she emitted an unpleasant hissing sound from her throat. Feeling danger approaching, she shifted her target, commanding the zombies to go after the weaker Luo Ning.
Mu Chengfeng’s eyes turned cold as he shielded Luo Ning behind him. The black mist seemed to come alive, spreading through the air and transforming into sharp black blades that pierced the little girl’s arm, causing her to fall from the tall zombie she had been on.
Her eyes turned ferocious. She noticed her arm was corroding and let out a scream in anger, commanding the zombies to attack while attempting to escape.
In an instant, she was pierced through the chest by a zombie behind her. Among the zombies, there was only level suppression. Once the authority that came with their levels was lifted, zombies could even turn against their own kind.
Without the psychic control, the zombies became more scattered. Some even instinctively feared the black flames and dared not approach. After the zombies retreated, Mu Chengfeng pushed Luo Ning into the car and dashed out through a gap.
Chen Li followed closely behind, finding a safe spot to stop.
They loaded food—milk, vegetables, and jerky—into the car, as well as supplies from the grain and oil section.
But while moving things, Chen Li suddenly felt an itch on his arm. He swallowed hard, and as he realized something, his eyes slowly moved downwards. Suddenly, his pupils constricted. There was a small cut on his arm, faintly oozing black. Although the wound was easy to overlook, it instantly plunged him into despair.
Chen Li’s heart nearly stopped. He realized he had been inadvertently scratched by a zombie. He had been feeling so proud for escaping a wave of zombies, yet here he was, so unlucky.
Whether bitten or scratched by a zombie, infection was inevitable.
Chen Li felt like crying. He wasn’t ready to die. He didn’t want to.
Luo Ning had already walked quite a distance when he suddenly noticed the footsteps behind him had stopped. He turned around and asked, “Why did you stop?”
Mu Chengfeng’s expression darkened as he stared at Chen Li’s pale face.
