- Chapter 49 - Holding Tight to the Big Boss of the Apocalypse (13)
Being able to activate an ability was naturally a good thing, especially in the apocalypse where it could mean survival.
However, Mu Chengfeng had never seen this kind of ability before. All he knew was that it could corrode.
As the zombie lay on the ground, a glimmer of light flashed in its brain. Mu Chengfeng sliced it with his knife and extracted a crystal.
He hadn’t expected this level two zombie to have a crystal core. The crystal core was important, a key to upgrading for ability users, and it served as a universal currency in the apocalypse.
He disdainfully wiped off the blood and stored it away, then loaded all the gasoline onto the car. Next to the gas station was a supermarket. Inside, it was quiet. There was nothing unusual on the ceiling, so he felt safe transferring their supplies to the car, filling it completely to the brim.
No wonder space abilities were so popular in the apocalypse. They were like walking warehouses. Luo Ning felt a bit envious of the female lead.
His only cheat code was the gene modification liquid, but unfortunately there was only one left, which had a chance of activating an ability.
It was getting late, and they needed to find a place to rest quickly. Sleeping in the car at night was unsafe, as darkness concealed dangers. Clearing zombies in the city was too troublesome, so they headed to a more secluded area.
As the sun set, the soft evening light filtered in through the car windows, painting the sky with fiery hues, a dazzling glow that spread across the horizon. If it weren’t for the apocalypse, this would be a stunning view.
Luo Ning lazily leaned against the seat, the strands of his hair catching the light, his fair cheeks rosy and soft.
He munched on some chips and felt a bit thirsty, so he pulled out his favorite milk to drink.
It certainly couldn’t compare to the freshest, but what was there to be picky about now?
The sweet taste was so comforting!
He contentedly squinted his eyes, habitually licking the milk from the corners of his mouth like a kitten, his red lips slightly parted, and his pink tongue peeking out, glistening with moisture.
Mu Chengfeng caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye, and his hand trembled slightly. His eyes darkened. This person was too cunning. If he wanted to drink milk, just drink it. Couldn’t he be a bit more proper?
Hmph, he knew this kid had plenty of tricks up his sleeve.
Luo Ning took a sip and found some left in the cap. Reluctantly, he licked the milk residue, looking like a kitten. However, his unconscious movements had a hint of flirtation and temptation.
Mu Chengfeng finally couldn’t hold back any longer. He felt a headache coming on. Could this person calm down for a moment? He frowned and said seriously, “Can you be more serious?”
“Stop thinking about all this nonsense all the time!”
Luo Ning looked confused, mumbling, “I’m just drinking some milk. Is that a problem?”
What was with Mu Chengfeng’s expression as if he saw through the essence of the situation?
It was all so strange. Sometimes, he found he couldn’t understand what this man was saying at all.
Ignoring him, Luo Ning took out a lollipop and started to chew on it.
Mu Chengfeng felt helpless. It seemed he couldn’t reason with him. He had to stick to his principles. No matter the means, he would remain indifferent.
As the sky darkened, the car drove into a small county town. The county town wasn’t large, with only low buildings. It appeared very desolate. The usual noise had vanished, leaving only the roars of zombies.
Most survivors had banded together to seek refuge in bases, while those remaining were generally infected.
In the night, only a few dim lights flickered. The electrical systems hadn’t completely shut down yet, but in a few months, they would be relying on generators.
Mu Chengfeng kept Luo Ning behind him as he searched for a supermarket that was still lit. After clearing out the zombies inside, he locked the doors tightly and found a clean spot to sit.
The shelves were empty of food and water, but some miscellaneous items remained.
Luo Ning had some snacks but wasn’t full. He took out some vermicelli and jerky, while Mu Chengfeng heated up the electric cooker.
The refreshing vermicelli was put into the pot, steaming hot, with some pickled vegetables and a couple of slices of jerky added. It should taste very nice.
Luo Ning stood up to wash the dishes but accidentally stepped on a water bottle. His foot slipped, and he stumbled sideways.
He thought he would fall on his butt, but he was caught by a pair of hands, landing against Mu Chengfeng. He ended up lying sideways on Mu Chengfeng’s lap. He looked up and met Mu Chengfeng’s deep eyes, which held a complicated expression.
The two were very close. Luo Ning’s small frame could easily fit into Mu Chengfeng’s arms. The position felt somewhat intimate. Luo Ning blushed and quickly looked away, saying in a soft voice, “Thank you.”
Mu Chengfeng snorted coldly. He knew the other party was up to no good, trying to get close to him with ulterior motives. How naive.
