Luo Ning felt a bit disheartened. Song FengXiao hadn’t been this cold before. He asked, “Brother Song, are you upset? You haven’t talked much since yesterday. If something’s wrong, just tell me.”

“You don’t even look at me.”

Feeling dejected, Luo Ning’s eyes drooped, resembling a pitiful little creature. He turned his head away. “You’ve really hurt my little fan’s heart.”

“Sigh, I’m so sad now that I can’t even focus on class.”

He turned around with drooping shoulders. His lonely back looked like a sad little animal, making anyone with a soft heart want to pat his head in comfort.

Song Fengxiao’s eyebrows twitched slightly. He remained silent, with the milk candies still lying on the desk, their round packaging cute and small. Only this soft little bee would eat such childish snacks.

After two classes, he noticed the buzzing bee hadn’t turned around. With a straight back, the soft hair that usually stood up now drooped, exuding an air of disappointment.

Song Fengxiao leaned alone in the corner, without the usual praise buzzing in his ears or admiring gazes directed at him. It felt like something was missing. Outside, even the sunlight didn’t seem as bright.

He tapped the desk boredly, his gaze falling once more on the two pieces of candy. Unwrapping the packaging revealed two white milk candies. They smelled quite nice but were a bit sickly sweet.

Hearing a soft rustle behind him, Luo Ning looked over sharply, his eyes bright. He leaned his hand on Song Fengxiao’s desk. “How is it, Brother Song? Isn’t it especially sweet?”

“By the way, keep that expression, it’s so cute. Let me take a picture of you.”

When Song Fengxiao ate the candy, his cheeks puffed slightly, and his expression relaxed. He looked like a high and cold cat. Luo Ning felt that the contrast was cute and wanted to capture it.

Song Fengxiao stiffened and stopped Luo Ning. “Aren’t you afraid your phone will get confiscated?”

High school students couldn’t openly play with their phones. Luo Ning stuffed his phone back into his pocket. “That’s true.”

“Anyway, since I’m close by, I can just turn my head and see your handsome face. No need for high-definition photos.”

Song Fengxiao didn’t understand how Luo Ning could so smoothly flatter him like that. Perhaps he was genuinely deep in admiration, and it flowed naturally.

If the little bee (Luo Ning’s nickname) simply admired him, he wouldn’t mind. But this admiration was mixed with impure feelings.

One step back from Song Fengxiao indeed made Luo Ning more bold. He felt that Song Fengxiao accepted his friendliness and didn’t reject friendship. Since they were friends, it was natural to have some closer interactions.

In the mornings, not only did Luo Ning bring milk and fruit snacks for himself, but he also brought a share for Song Fengxiao, even though he knew Song Fengxiao wouldn’t accept them.

After class, Luo Ning would go to the bathroom with Song Fengxiao and would follow him closely at lunch. He understood that Song Fengxiao responded better to a soft approach than force.

Through the class group, Luo Ning finally found Song Fengxiao’s contact information. He sent a friend request, propping his chin as he looked at Song Fengxiao. “Brother Song, let’s add each other as friends. Please accept my request.”

“We’re already sitting at adjacent desks. It should be okay to add each other.”

“Ow, look at my sad little heart! After so much effort to get close to you, I can’t even get your contact information. It feels like my spiritual world has turned gray, and I have no energy left. It’s so depressing.”

Hearing Luo Ning’s rambling that got more and more exaggerated, Song Fengxiao interrupted, “Adding friends is fine, but you’re not allowed to disturb me.”

Luo Ning was secretly overjoyed. “Brother Song, I’m not that free. I just want to have conversations with you normally.”

Song Fengxiao’s profile picture was a simple English image, just like it was expected. It was clean and neat, matching Song Fengxiao’s quiet and reserved personality.

Luo Ning still knew to keep his distance, fearing to annoy Song Fengxiao. After adding him, he just said goodnight or sent a cute emoji.

When Song Fengxiao saw the cat yawning lazily on the screen, it reminded him of Luo Ning’s lethargic appearance after morning readings. A smile unconsciously crept to his lips. Just as he was about to put down his phone, he hesitated and sent a simple emoji back.

His emoji was much simpler: a sleeping cat jpg, not cute at all, but it was enough to surprise Luo Ning.

…

Sitting behind him was the top student in the entire school. Luo Ning was smart, and with Song Fengxiao’s constant guidance and reminders, it was hard not to improve his grades. His accuracy in homework kept increasing, surprising all his teachers. Whenever he encountered difficult questions, he would just ask Song Fengxiao.

Gradually, he was able to sit next to Song Fengxiao, with books occupying half the space. If Song Fengxiao objected, Luo Ning would righteously reply, “Brother Song, it’s easier to ask questions this way. My neck has been hurting a bit these days, and turning around is exhausting.”

“You’re so thin, there’s no way I can’t squeeze next to you. I need to sit next to you to absorb some academic aura and keep reminding myself to take you as a role model and to catch up with you.”

Song Fengxiao shook his head. He had always found it hard to argue with Luo Ning. He helplessly lowered his head to continue his homework.

Luo Ning peeked over and sighed with a hint of envy. “Brother Song, there’s definitely a gap between people. You’re tall with long legs, handsome and talented. Not only can you write beautifully, but you’ve taken all the glory for yourself. Could you leave some room for others?”

“Why don’t you write a book called ‘How an Excellent Person is Cultivated’?”

Song Fengxiao felt a bit tired. He was almost immune to Luo Ning’s flattery. He reached out to press down on Luo Ning’s head. “Stop being silly. Are you bored? Don’t you have enough homework?”

Luo Ning silently complained that Song Fengxiao clearly enjoyed hearing flattery. As a friend, he was just trying to satisfy Song Fengxiao’s strange interests.

Luo Ning’s deskmate glanced back secretly, his eyes filled with surprise and a tinge of sour envy. He had personally witnessed how Song Fengxiao and Luo Ning became familiar with each other. While they weren’t especially close, it was clear that among all the classmates, Luo Ning had the most direct connection with Song Fengxiao.

It turned out that being thick-skinned allowed one to cling to the powerful and gain the benefit of Song Fengxiao’s tutoring. It was no easy feat.

The two weeks flew by, and soon it was time for the monthly exams. The exam rooms were prepared in advance, and the teachers repeatedly explained the important points.

Given Luo Ning’s past grades, he was certainly assigned to the exam room filled with the lowest-ranked students. Sitting in the classroom, he didn’t feel nervous. He had a solid grasp of the basics and tried his best, completing all the questions he could.

The test was easier than Luo Ning had imagined. Some of the questions were ones he had practiced repeatedly, so they were fresh in his mind. He estimated that passing every subject wouldn’t be a problem.

After two days of exams, Luo Ning left the classroom feeling relieved. He was ready to find Song Fengxiao for a meal.

As he turned the corner of the stairs, someone roughly grabbed his sleeve. “Luo Ning, stop right there!”

Qiao Yuming looked extremely displeased, as if Luo Ning owed him eight million.

Luo Ning shrugged off Qiao Yuming with annoyance, wondering what had gotten into him this time.

Qiao Yuming blocked his way. “So you’ve grown some guts! Last time you dared to splash water on me and even got my family to pressure me. Did you say something to my parents?”

Recently, Qiao Yuming had been having a rough time. His parents constantly blamed him, scolding him for breaking off the engagement with Luo Ning and insisting he lower his attitude to win Luo Ning back. Qiao Yuming was getting fed up. His parents hadn’t been this nagging before. He was sure that Luo Ning had said something to cause his parents to force him to compromise.

Honestly, Qiao Yuming was used to Luo Ning’s pestering. He saw it as evidence of his charm. When Luo Ning was clinging to him, he felt disgusted and resentful. Now that Luo Ning wasn’t fawning over him, it made him feel like he was losing face.

Qiao Yuming firmly believed that Luo Ning was still infatuated with him. He would never admit that Luo Ning had truly given up on him, stubbornly telling himself that this was just a new trick from Luo Ning, a sign that Luo Ning was getting smarter.

Qiao Yuming sneered, “You’re pretty good at playing mind games. I really underestimated you.”

Then he thought of something, making him even angrier. “You’re still shamelessly hanging around Song Fengxiao. Are you trying to provoke me and make me jealous? I’ll tell you, that’s not going to happen!”

Qiao Yuming despised Song Fengxiao’s aloof and hypocritical demeanor the most. Coming from a poor background, he acted all high and mighty. Who was he trying to impress?

The person he liked, Cheng Yu, admired Song Fengxiao greatly, and now that Luo Ning was also getting close to him, Qiao Yuming was even more infuriated. Whenever he bumped into Luo Ning, he couldn’t help but vent his anger.

Luo Ning’s eyes were filled with amusement. He found Qiao Yuming’s thought process particularly strange. How could someone be so ridiculous?

“Qiao Yuming, how could you be so ridiculous? What can I possibly like about you? Barking like a mad dog? Sitting at the bottom of the class? Your good-for-nothing charm?”

“To speak frankly, aside from your overly imaginative mind, you’re useless at everything else.”

Luo Ning had enough of him. He and Qiao Yuming found each other repulsive, yet Qiao Yuming still had to come over and cause trouble. It was like asking for a beating.

Luo Ning walked past Qiao Yuming, eager to go upstairs. Unexpectedly, Qiao Yuming reached out and shoved him. “What right do you have to insult me, you shameless little parasite?”

With a forceful shove, Luo Ning stumbled, losing his balance and almost tumbling down the stairs. Luckily, there weren’t many steps, or else he might have seriously injured his head.

Still, it hurt. A throbbing pain in his head and a sharp ache in his ankle. Tears welled in Luo Ning’s eyes as he struggled to get up.

Qiao Yuming hadn’t expected the push to be so strong. Watching Luo Ning roll down, he felt a mix of panic and a hint of relief, his eyes filled with malice.

Qiao Yuming didn’t plan to help Luo Ning up immediately. Since he didn’t seem to have any serious injuries, it was fine for him to suffer for a bit.

Before he could say anything condescending, a sharp pain shot through his ankle. Then he felt a punch to his back, causing Qiao Yuming to crumble to the ground, his knees slamming loudly. He grimaced in pain.

Song Fengxiao shot a cold glare at Qiao Yuming and scooped Luo Ning up, hurrying to the infirmary.

Luo Ning’s face turned pale, his head spinning. He leaned against Song Fengxiao’s chest and clutched his shirt like an injured little animal, softly whimpering.
