Xie Chunian now had a little husband at home, but he currently couldn’t slaughter pigs. All his income came from selling mountain goods or doing odd jobs at the dock. He was strong and managed to save some money each day, which made him live slightly better than the villagers.

Earning money outside wasn’t a long-term plan, so Xie Chunian also planned to farm. Since there had been no natural disasters these past few years, the harvests had been good. As soon as the sun rose, he carried a hoe to cultivate a piece of wasteland.

Luo Ning packed two pieces of flatbread and said, “I’ll go too. I don’t want to stay cooped up at home.”

The wasteland wasn’t far and was overgrown with weeds. The fertile farmland in the village had all been sold. If one wanted to farm more, they had to buy wasteland and cultivate it themselves.

Xie Chunian dug out the extra stones while Luo Ning squatted beside him pulling weeds. The roots of these weeds were deep, and his movements were clumsy. There were some he couldn’t even pull out.

Looking back, he had only managed a small pile of weeds. Luo Ning realized that his strength was even less than he had imagined. The original owner had always collapsed from exhaustion from farm work. No wonder he was so thin.

Luo Ning’s fingers were red, and fine beads of sweat formed on his forehead. Xie Chunian held his hand, brushed off the dirt, and pulled him to sit on the edge of the field.

It seemed his little husband was more delicate than expected. Xie Chunian rubbed Luo Ning’s fingers and said softly, “I’ll handle these rough jobs. You sit and play for a while. If you feel hot, you can go back to avoid the sun.”

Luo Ning felt a bit embarrassed. Most of the household chores were done by Xie Chunian. From feeding the chickens to chopping firewood and planting vegetables, it was all Xie Chunian’s work. Every morning when he woke up, his clothes had already been washed. Compared to that, it felt like Xie Chunian was taking too much care of him.

Luo Ning said, “There’s so much land, how can you manage it alone? I’ll rest for a bit and then come back.”

Xie Chunian wove a grasshopper for his little husband to play with. “It’s fine, I’m used to it. I can finish it all by morning.”

After thinking for a moment, he added, “If you’re worried about me, steam some more rice. Bathing and scrubbing my back tonight would be nice too.”

His rough voice carried a hint of laughter and some intimate teasing. Luo Ning’s heart fluttered slightly. Looking up, he could see the glistening beads of sweat on the man’s jaw, the moving Adam’s apple, and his muscular chest. Remembering the smooth muscles, he felt a bit thirsty and hurriedly urged, “Alright, you go and hoe the land.”

Seeing his little husband’s red ears, Xie Chunian found him truly adorable. With his little husband by his side, he felt as if he had endless energy, and he swung the hoe even faster.

Luo Ning knew he couldn’t help much. He watched Xie Chunian work for a while, then picked some wildflowers. With nothing else to do, he walked along the field ridge, checking for any wild vegetables to dig up for a cold dish.

The small path curved, and he spotted a wild peach tree by the roadside, its red fruit particularly beautiful. Luo Ning picked a few, then noticed a puddle nearby. He walked over to wash his hands. He then saw some motion in the water. He stepped back and saw many red-shelled creatures moving beneath the surface. They were plump and tender crayfish.

Crayfish weren’t rare in the village. They were only caught when someone craved meat. Otherwise, crayfish were chopped up to feed the chickens and ducks.

To find so many plump crayfish in such a small puddle was surprising, a stroke of luck for Luo Ning. He received a reward for completing his last mission. That was an increase of twenty percent in his luck value, but not as powerful as a koi fish.

But it was still better than average luck. For example, the hens at home typically laid only two eggs. Ever since he married, the hens managed to produce six eggs.

Seeing the crayfish made Luo Ning’s eyes sparkle. He rubbed his hands together, afraid to reach into the water because of their claws. Instead, he dangled a bamboo basket in the water. With a splash, many crayfish tumbled inside.

Luo Ning enjoyed this. He quickly ran back to get his basket. After pouring the crayfish in, he got another basket filled. The plump crayfish looked like they had a lot of meat. Luo Ning thought he could have a good meal today.

Lost in happy thoughts, he suddenly heard a thud nearby. He turned around and saw that a rabbit had crashed to death beside a tree trunk.

Luo Ning widened his eyes in disbelief. So there really was such a clumsy rabbit!

He imagined plates of rabbit meat and hurried forward to pull up the rabbit’s ears. It was heavy!

It was a beautiful rabbit, its fur snow-white and fluffy. But of course, such a cute rabbit had to be eaten.

Luo Ning smiled as he happily dragged a basket full of crayfish and carried a rabbit, returning to his field with a bountiful harvest.

Even Xie Chunian was a bit surprised that Luo Ning had managed to catch a rabbit just by taking a stroll. Seeing his little husband’s excited expression, he praised, “Wow, you’re amazing!”

Luo Ning smiled. “I’ll make you something delicious when we get back.”

There were too many crayfish to handle, so they had to scrub them one by one. Luo Ning prepared the side dishes and chili peppers, making a spicy and numbing dish of crayfish that was fresh, fragrant, and delicious. Just thinking about it made him salivate. Xie Chunian also finished preparing the rabbit, leaving half to air dry.

Dinner was so lavish that Luo Ning felt a bit stuffed. Not a single crumb was left on the plate, all of it was devoured by Xie Chunian.

The night was cool like water, but Luo Ning didn’t feel refreshed at all. His face was still flushed, and he couldn’t bear to look directly at the broad back in front of him.

The man still remembered those teasing words and asked Luo Ning to scrub his back.

If Luo Ning was unwilling, Xie Chunian would complain, “Baby, I’ve been working all day, and I’m so tired. I can’t even lift my hands.”

“My back aches too, my fingers don’t want to move. If you don’t help me scrub my back, then maybe I won’t wash at all.”

What could Luo Ning do? He could only endure his embarrassment, tightly gripping the towel. He couldn’t really let someone go to bed smelling of sweat.

And he felt a bit sorry for Xie Chunian, so he indulged him. Although he knew Xie Chunian was strong, how could someone doing physical labor all day not be tired?

Luo Ning carefully dampened the towel and wiped the man’s back. The skin under his fingers was tough and felt pleasantly solid.

They had already been intimate, but Luo Ning still lowered his eyelids, unable to look at him openly. His palms felt hot, making him want to wash up more.

A faint fragrance filled the air, and his eyelashes fluttered, as if brushing against Xie Chunian’s heart.

Xie Chunian pulled the person behind him close and bit into the other’s lips, grinding them until they turned a deep red.

Luo Ning’s eyes turned misty as his fingers scratched marks on the man’s neck. Just a moment ago, he said he couldn’t lift his hands. What was going on now?!

He thought resentfully, he really shouldn’t have been so soft-hearted. He wouldn’t be scrubbing any more backs ever again!

The next day, Luo Ning wore a top that covered his collar. In the late morning, he went to bring water to Xie Chunian. As he walked, he passed two women who looked at him with a strange look, with a hint of doubt.

Luo Ning greeted them with a smile, “Aunties, why do you seem to be avoiding me? Is there something going on?”

Luo Ning was known as a diligent young man in the village, and everyone generally liked him. Now that he asked, the two women shared what was on their minds.

“Luo Ger, we all thought it was your sister who was marrying Xie Chunian, so why did it change to you?”

“No news has spread in the village about a switch. When did you two change partners?”

“We heard your mother crying yesterday. She was crying so hard, saying you knocked your sister unconscious and took the wedding clothes to marry in her place.”

“That’s not right. Is it true?”

The two women recounted the story, and word had spread throughout the village. Normally, anything small could be the topic of gossip, let alone something as serious as this. It was unusual. Such incidents had never happened in the past.

Everyone in the village knew that the Luo family’s young son was honest and reliable. Their first reaction was disbelief. How could such a timid young man have the audacity to do such shameless actions without telling his parents?

If this got out, it would mean he was stealing his sister’s husband—he would be scorned!

But then they thought about it again. Given how his own parents were scolding him so badly and crying so hard, they couldn’t help but harbor doubts.

If it were true, then this young man was really shameless. Who would dare associate with him? If he could seduce even his brother-in-law, wouldn’t he also target other men?

Luo Ning understood. This gossip must have come from Luo Qing. After all, on the day of the wedding, no one saw Luo Qing. According to her, she was ‘knocked unconscious out in the house.’ He had thought Luo Qing was at home recuperating, but instead she was making trouble by pretending to be innocent and unaware to ruin his reputation and possibly tarnish his image in Xie Chunian’s eyes.

Luo Ning looked as if he had suffered a great injustice. His eyes turned red, tears brimming and threatening to spill over, resembling a pitiful child. “Aunties, how could I do such a thing? You know my character.”

“Why did Mother say such things? She clearly forced me to marry into the Xie family to replace my sister, all because my sister has someone she likes. She wanted me to give in to her.”

“I agreed to help my sister because I wanted her to be happy, but now she said it’s all my fault? I listened to her. I didn’t want her to be sad, but am I wrong?”

The two women’s eyes sparkled with excitement. They loved gossip, and what started as a simple question turned into the revelation that the Luo family’s eldest daughter had a lover. This made them even more astonished. The story was simply too juicy!

As a girl who was already engaged, how could she not properly wait at home for her marriage but instead fall for another man? It was shameless! They had always found Luo Qing strange. Everyone was from the village, digging mud, so why did Luo Qing always disdain others? She wouldn’t even greet people and was said to do nothing at home except buy clothes and accessories. She was lazy and greedy. Aside from her good looks, she had nothing else good about her.

Who would have thought Luo Qing could stoop to behaving even worse? She had no shame at all!

Compared to the usually honest Luo Ning, people were naturally more inclined to think that Luo Qing had done something wrong.

This was beyond being shameless. Throwing her own brother out to replace her in marriage—her conscience was dark to the core! She deserved to be eaten by dogs.

And what about the elderly parents in the Luo family—how could they allow Luo Qing to act recklessly? Were they getting senile?

One woman moved her eyes. “Luo Ger, tell Auntie. Who is your sister entangled with? Is he from our village?”

Luo Ning hesitated, seemingly frightened, covering his mouth. “Mother… don’t make me say it. I can’t disclose that.”

The woman pressed on. “It’s alright. There are just the three of us here. We will never spread it.”

“If you don’t tell us, how can we believe you? You need to make it clear so we can defend you.”
