At this moment, the door creaked open, and a woman dressed in a gray cloth dress hurried in. When she saw Luo Ning lifting the veil, her triangular eyes widened, and she scolded, “What do you think you’re doing pulling the veil off?! Put it back on quickly! The wedding procession is coming soon!”

The woman kept talking. After a busy morning, she felt irritable and complained to Luo Ning, “Don’t feel wronged. At your age, you should be getting married. Just look how lively today’s wedding is.”

“Xie Chunian doesn’t have any money now, but he at least has the skills of a butcher. That’s not too bad. You don’t think I will harm you, do you?”

“Don’t compare yourself to your sister. Your sister is beautiful and smarter than you. She has never done rough work since she was a child, so she’ll suffer when she gets married. You’re different. You know everything, and you can live well even if you marry Xie Chunian.”

“Once you marry him, you’d better take care of your husband and have two sons. You’ll be living a prosperous life.”

Luo Ning remained silent, sitting quietly on the bed. This matched the original owner’s character well. The person talking nonstop was the original owner’s mother, Mrs. Luo, and her constant nagging was just to make him submit.

Luo Ning didn’t want to hear Mrs. Luo’s lectures. He absentmindedly scratched the edge of the bed, keeping his head down, lost in thought.

Getting married so suddenly after arriving was quite a shock to Luo Ning, but Xie Chunian was his mission target. He had to marry him. This was the only way to get close to Xie Chunian without raising suspicion.

But he was troubled about how to interact with Xie Chunian after marriage. He couldn’t become intimate with a stranger, yet as the man’s partner, he couldn’t ignore him either.

Luo Ning frowned in distress. He was thinking about it when the female lead, Luo Qing, quietly entered. As the female lead, she was quite beautiful, the village beauty adored by many young men. She said in a soft voice, “Mother, don’t worry. Xiao Ning is always well-behaved and obedient. He will definitely understand.”

“With Xiao Ning married to Brother Xie, once the swine fever passes, they’ll be able to eat pork every day. He might even come back to thank you.”

“With one ger married off, you and Dad will be relieved. Young Master Chen and I fell in love at first sight. He said he would come to our house to propose. Once I marry him and move into town, I’ll need Xiao Ning to take care of you both.”

At this point, a hint of smugness appeared in Luo Qing’s eyes. She was beautiful, and she believed she deserved a better life than marrying a peasant from the village. She wanted to enjoy a comfortable life in town as the wife of a wealthy man, which was fitting for her beauty.

Sure enough, after just a stroll around town, a rich young master had taken a liking to her. That young master came from a family that owned a cloth shop.

It wasn’t uncommon for women in the village to marry into town, but that mostly applied to becoming a concubine. What she wanted was the status of the legitimate wife, which was a world apart from those women.

She sighed and turned to Luo Ning, saying, “Xiao Ning, don’t blame your sister. I have my difficulties. I already have a lover, so how can I marry Brother Xie?”

“I know it’s unfair to you. Don’t worry. Once I marry into town, I’ll find ways to help you.”

“Look, today is your wedding day. I even stitched a wedding handkerchief for you.”

Although she spoke of apologies, there was no sincerity in her eyes.

Being willful and unwilling to marry meant she could just push her own brother out? In the end, it was selfishness.

In this family, no one had ever thought of the original owner’s feelings. No one cared whether he wanted this or not. It was all about not wanting to return the betrothal money of twenty taels of silver.

Luo Ning found it ironic and asked quietly, “Sister, weren’t you already engaged when you got to know that young master?”

According to the strict rules of ancient times, reputation was especially important. Once two people were engaged, if either party broke it off, they would be subjected to gossip and slander. Luo Qing hadn’t even canceled her engagement but was already flirting with another man. Spreading that around would surely harm her reputation.

Luo Qing had done a good job hiding it. No one in the village knew about her affair with Young Master Chen in town.

When Luo Ning brought this up, he stepped on a painful spot for Luo Qing. It was as if her cover was ripped away. Her face turned red as she looked at him with anger. “What nonsense are you saying? I’m your sister! How dare you question me? What can I do? I met Young Master Chen at the wrong time. I’m in a difficult situation as well. I couldn’t possibly marry Brother Xie while having feelings for another man.”

Who told Xie Chunian to be so incompetent? A smelly butcher, what qualifications did he have compared to the young master of the cloth shop?

Luo Qing felt unhappy and didn’t want to discuss it further. Worried that someone outside might see her, she carefully slipped out.

Luo Ning stared at the red wedding clothes he was wearing. Mrs. Luo stood guard beside him, making sure he was obediently prepared for marriage.

Before long, the wedding procession arrived. Luo Ning was helped outside. Weddings in the village weren’t very elaborate. They lived modestly, and the bridal procession came in a donkey cart, which was considered quite good.

Amidst the noisy commotion, a rough, large palm reached out to him. With the red veil blocking his view, Luo Ning could only see the man’s strong waist. Holding onto that large hand, he climbed onto the donkey cart.

The cart jostled along, and amidst the sound of drums and gongs, he arrived at a new place. After the wedding ceremony, he was settled into the bridal chamber.

He cautiously glanced around the unfamiliar room. It was clean and simple, with just a wooden bed he was sitting on and a few cabinets. The only decoration was the red “double happiness” character on the window.

“If you’re hungry, you can eat some food,” Xie Chunian said as he entered with a bowl and chopsticks.

Luo Ning bit his lip and pulled off the veil. He originally planned to marry quietly, but after some hesitation, he felt it was unfair to Xie Chunian. No matter what, Xie Chunian shouldn’t be deceived. He had the right to know the truth.

As for whether he would be sent back or allowed to stay, that was Xie Chunian’s choice.

The person sitting on the bed—Xie Chunian remembered him. He was Luo Qing’s younger brother, a child of the Luo family. Luo Qing had left a high-profile and arrogant impression, while Luo Ning was quiet and always kept his head down.

But now, the image of the obedient young man sitting there suddenly became vivid in Xie Chunian’s mind. The young man was thin and small, with a faint pink hue on his face. His eyes were particularly beautiful, sparkling and bright, but now they were looking around nervously.

Like a frightened deer, it felt almost wrong to speak loudly.

Xie Chunian felt a strange emotion rising inside him. “So it’s you who came to marry me?”

Luo Ning explained, “My mother made me marry you.”

It was clear to Xie Chunian with just a bit of thought that the Luo family wanted to back out but didn’t want to face the consequences of breaking off the engagement, so they married their younger son into his household instead.

Although he was angry at the Luo family’s deceit, Xie Chunian wouldn’t vent his anger on the young man.

Luo Ning continued, “Brother Xie, I’m sorry. If you don’t want this, I can leave now. I’ll explain outside that it was our Luo family’s mistake. No one will blame you.”

Xie Chunian’s voice was muffled as he replied, “So, I paid the bride price only to end up empty-handed? Will your family return the bride price?”

Luo Ning’s ears turned bright red, overwhelmed with shame. He nervously clenched his fingers, tongue-tied for a long while. After a while, he finally managed to say in a small voice, “Brother Xie, I really can’t get them to return the money. It’s because I’m useless.”

“If… if you don’t mind, I can be your husband. I can do many chores, sew clothes, cook, anything. I’m sure I will be a good husband.”

After saying this, Luo Ning felt even more embarrassed and squeezed his fingers tightly.

Xie Chunian silently looked at Luo Ning. The room was incredibly quiet. After a long while, he finally spoke, “Alright.”

Although he held no feelings for Luo Qing, the fact that the marriage partner had been secretly changed to Luo Ning by the Luo family should have made him angry. But after looking at the young man a bit longer, he suddenly found him quite pleasing to the eye. Having him as a wife wouldn’t be bad, and he decided not to dwell on it anymore.

Upon hearing the affirmative response, Luo Ning’s eyes brightened, and a smile appeared at the corners of his lips, though he actually felt quite nervous.

If Xie Chunian had rejected him, he was afraid he would be beaten to death upon returning to the Luo family. He had nowhere else to go. He was already thinking about where to find a place to stay when Xie Chunian actually agreed.

The tense atmosphere quickly dissipated. Seeing the young man smile sweetly made Xie Chunian’s expression warm up, and he handed him the bowl and chopsticks.

“Eat up, the food is getting cold.”

The bowl was mostly filled with vegetables, topped with a layer of fragrant chicken. Due to the swine fever, there was no pork, so they had to make do with chicken and duck for the meal.

The aroma filled Luo Ning’s nose, and he felt hungry now. He took the bowl and put a large piece of meat in his mouth, his cheeks puffing up.

Seeing him looking somewhat cute, Xie Chunian’s fingers curled slightly. He felt an urge to poke him.

“You should rest in the room for now. I still need to go out and entertain the guests.”

Luo Ning nodded. After finishing his meal and resolving worries on his mind, he relaxed a bit, peeling the peanuts on the table as a snack while listening to the idle chatter outside.

As dusk approached, guests gradually left. The cook, who had been helping out, cleaned the dishes and chopsticks and left with a smile, carrying the leftover food away.

Xie Chunian wasn’t sociable. He spent his days focused on making a living and wasn’t very familiar with the village men. No one stayed behind to create a ruckus during the wedding night.

Luo Ning had the chance to wash up early, removing the makeup from his face, taking off the wedding dress, and letting his hair fall loosely behind him.

Xie Chunian bathed quickly. With his strong physique, he didn’t mind using cold water at night. He returned to the room dripping with water.

Luo Ning realized they were alone in the room, his back stiffening with tension. He wondered if anything… well, that wouldn’t happen. After all, Xie Chunian had just accepted him. He probably wouldn’t touch him.

Luo Ning silently reassured himself, feeling his legs tremble a bit.

Xie Chunian remained silent, his gaze scanning Luo Ning. With his heavy clothes removed, the young man with loose hair looked even smaller. His face was tiny enough for Xie Chunian to grasp with one hand. He seemed so soft, and his slender waist could be easily held. The thin underclothes didn’t cover much, accentuating his attractive curves.

Xie Chunian’s throat moved, then he suddenly stepped forward and picked Luo Ning up horizontally. Now that he was his little husband, why shouldn’t he touch him?

Pushing the young man down onto the bed, they fit snugly together. Just as he imagined, Luo Ning was soft. Xie Chunian held him tightly, taking in the young man’s fragrance. His little husband’s eyelashes fluttered, his bright eyes sparkling, and his cheeks flushed with embarrassment, making him even more enticing.
