As dawn broke, several police officers arrived at the small apartment building. They forcibly broke down the door. Inside, there was a lingering smell of decay. Bloodstains were splattered on the shiny floors and walls, dark red and dried. A body lay next to a coffee table, and not far away, two objects quietly rolled on the ground. They were eyeballs. The person lay there with his neck twisted in an unusual position, with empty eye sockets wide open.

It looked bloody and carried an inexplicable eeriness that made one’s hair stand on end.

The police officers furrowed their brows. Who would use such a cruel method to harm someone?

After processing the corpse, they began investigating the cause of the incident. Luo Ning and another resident from the same floor were questioned as witnesses about the deceased’s situation.

The property management also reviewed surveillance footage to see if any suspicious people had entered the building.

The police officers carefully rewatched the footage to make sure no clues were overlooked. But the more they watched, the more they couldn’t help but shiver.

It was just as Luo Ning had said. The deceased hadn’t left the room since the 10th, nor had anyone entered. There was no murderer, so who could have done it?

Surely, it wasn’t suicide? Who would be so cruel to themselves as to break their own neck? Logically speaking, suicide wouldn’t lead to such a thing.

Before long, while checking for fingerprints and other evidence indoors, the police officers found a pinhole camera that seemed to have been installed specifically to monitor pets. The footage showed the man standing there in a daze, his expression ferocious, mumbling something.

Yet there was nothing in front of him. Then suddenly, the man clawed at his own eyeballs and broke his neck, his hands bulging with veins as if he were under some form of control. But there were no others present in the room.

With this evidence, even as they tried to remain calm, the police officers had to admit that there might indeed be some unknown, unseen factor at play.

The neighborhood was in an uproar. Everyone liked to watch a show. When the police came to investigate, someone took photos, and the brutal crime scene spread online like wildfire. Those residents who saw the dark, gaping eye sockets were chilled to the bone, while the more timid ones couldn’t sleep. They were afraid that they would experience something similar one night.

Some went to the property management office to complain, while others urged them to find the killer quickly. Others even vaguely speculated about supernatural forces. Such thoughts only heightened their fear!

For several consecutive nights, the lights in the neighborhood illuminated a wide area. Those living alone turned on their lights to raise their courage, while others considered moving due to the insufficient security in the neighborhood.

Luo Ning didn’t feel particularly heartbroken about his neighbor because they weren’t close to each other. However, it was disheartening to think that just a few days ago he had exchanged cheerful greetings, and now that person was gone.

The apartment next door felt empty. The kitten was now homeless, flicked its tail and paced restlessly, no longer lively. Luo Ning didn’t want to see the kitten become a stray, so he decided to adopt it and filled his home with many new items.

He once again felt the danger of the world. Accidents were entirely unpredictable, and he could accidentally encounter some ghost and die a horrible death.

Feeling stressed, lacking in sleep, and having to work or even work overtime during the day, dark circles appeared under Luo Ning’s eyes.

As the accumulated fatigue overwhelmed him, he leaned against his pillow, his eyelids growing heavy.

Yet he still forced himself to look beside him, extending his small hand with a hint of dependence on his expression. He said softly, “I want to hold your hand.”

At this moment, he was no longer afraid of Fu Xian. So what if Fu Xian was a vengeful ghost? If he were truly that terrifying, why would he protect him?

He shook his hand, blinking, and the wisp of black mist hesitated before drifting over. Luo Ning smiled sweetly and grasped the mist tightly in his hand.

He rubbed his face against the mist and finally closed his eyes obediently. His long eyelashes cast shadows like small fans, his jade-like cheeks slightly pink. His small mouth slightly parted as he breathed gently, sending warm breaths into the air.

Fu Xian condensed his form, standing beside him, his blood-red eyes calm, resembling a ruby, devoid of the usual violent or sinister aura.

He watched Luo Ning. The shallow breaths that brushed against him like feathers somehow softened a part of Fu Xian’s heart. Such tranquility was something he had never expected.

As a vengeful ghost with special powers, he could bring nightmares to others, yet he himself was constantly trapped in a nightmare, doomed to become a vengeful and evil ghost.

It was simply because he had died tragically and with great resentment. From the moment his soul regained consciousness, he had been forced to relive the pain he experienced before death, a cycle that tormented without escape.

But after coming here, Fu Xian noticed that the surge of resentment within him was becoming increasingly controllable. His usually cold body felt surprisingly comfortable here.

Fu Xian slowly bent down, his large hand brushing through Luo Ning’s hair, pressing down the few rebellious strands. The touch was soft. He couldn’t help but stroke it again. Luo Ning unconsciously nuzzled into the caress. Fu Xian’s eyes softened, feeling that… perhaps this person was a bit cute?

His eyes lingered on Luo Ning’s face—the delicate, rosy skin, the delicate little nose. Gradually, his gaze wandered to Luo Ning’s lips, which glistened and exuded warm breaths.

Fu Xian’s gaze paused, as if drawn by the warmth. He leaned in closer, his thin lips tentatively brushing against Luo Ning’s. They were soft, soft as can be, similar to a strawberry he had once rarely tasted in the distant past.

Luo Ning sleepily licked his lips. Fu Xian felt as if he had been burned and abruptly retreated, his eyes momentarily stunned. If he hadn’t been calm, his ears would have turned red.

He recalled the sensation. It didn’t seem unpleasant. After hesitating for a moment, he pressed lips against his again, savoring the feeling. It was very, very comfortable.

A hint of joy crossed his face. When Luo Ning let out a little whimper, Fu Xian’s fingers stroked through his hair. In Luo Ning’s dream world, the dark flashes quickly vanished, replaced by beautiful scenery—a blue sky, clouds like cotton candy, and a surrounding sea of pink flowers, fragrant and warm.

Luo Ning’s furrowed brow relaxed, a hint of a smile appearing on his face.

When the sunlight streamed through the curtains, Luo Ning felt it was too bright, waking him up. His body felt incredibly light, as if he were a ball of cotton. He was surprised to find he had slept soundly until dawn.

After reflecting for a moment, he suddenly sat up, hurriedly checking the time, worried he might be late for work. Then it dawned on him. Today was the weekend, and he finally felt relieved.

Luo Ning tidied his messy hair and went to the kitchen to make breakfast, only to catch a whiff of a faint smell—something that smelled burnt.

The kitchen door was shut. Luo Ning quickly opened it and looked towards the source of the smell. On the stove, a pot was steaming.

He approached and saw that it was likely porridge, but the heat didn’t seem to be controlled properly, so it was overcooked and looked rather dry.

There was no one else in the house. Who had been cooking?

Luo Ning turned to look at the air. The sunlight was dancing, and the wisp of black mist seemed to have vanished.

He took the porridge outside, unable to hold back his excitement. His eyes lit up. He felt happy that Fu Xian had actually cooked for him.

Thinking of how clumsily Fu Xian had busied himself in the kitchen, now hiding away, warmed his heart. He even found Fu Xian quite adorable.

He appeared so fierce, but it was unexpected to see him in the kitchen. How kind! Luo Ning’s heart softened in an instant.

Although the porridge was burnt, it was Fu Xian’s thought that counted. Pairing it with some kimchi, Luo Ning still ate it all. He even found it delicious, feeling happy and satisfied.

It seemed like everything had turned beautiful. The sunlight was warm, the room felt cozy, and the kitten was cute.

At this moment, the black mist curled up in a shy ball, observing the person who had slept in late. For some reason, he felt compelled to cook.

He knew how to cook good food before, but after drifting as a spirit for many years, memories of cooking had long since faded. After finally boiling a pot of simple porridge, it turned out poorly. Just as he was trying to toss the pot out, he heard someone inside getting up and quickly floated away, feeling embarrassed and frustrated.

Luo Ning wiped his mouth and said to the meek black mist, “The porridge is delicious. I like it.”

“Can you come out for a moment? I want to see you.”

He waited for a while, and the wisp of black mist finally floated out. Despite the dark appearance, Luo Ning could sense the other’s awkwardness.

He hooked a finger around the black mist and smiled, and at that moment, the softness in his heart made him hug the wisp of black mist.

Even as a ghost, Fu Xian was gentle.

The black mist stiffened for a moment, wrapping around Luo Ning. Gaining some confidence, Luo Ning wanted to take another step forward to understand Fu Xian better. He asked softly, “Can I see your appearance? I want to see you more clearly.”

“If that’s the case, then I can tug at your clothes and hold your hand.”

Luo Ning asked expectantly. When he saw that the mist was unresponsive, he thought he was being rejected, and disappointment began to fill his eyes. Suddenly, the mist began to dissipate, swirling in the air before slowly gathering together, forming half of a silhouette that grew clearer.

Before him stood a tall man in a light-colored shirt, his complexion pale, his handsome features elegant and refined, exuding an air of scholarly with deep crimson eyes.

Fu Xian concealed the bloodstains on his shirt and brushed away the shadowy long hair. The left side of his face, which had just been bones and rotting flesh, was now covered with pale skin, appearing in its best condition.

Luo Ning stared in awe, his eyes sparkling as he praised, “So handsome!”

With such handsome features, he could easily be considered a school heartthrob!

A slight curve appeared at the corners of Fu Xian’s lips as he maintained a facade. He knew how timid this person was. Once he saw his true form, he would likely be scared to tears again.

Fu Xian extended his large hand, his broken knuckles appearing long and slender.

Luo Ning was puzzled and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Fu Xian’s hand pinched at Luo Ning’s cheek, and he replied seriously, “You wanted to hold hands, right?”

Luo Ning’s face turned red in an instant. His eyelashes fluttered as he grasped the man’s cold palm. Feeling its chill, he squeezed it tightly, trying to transfer some warmth.

Luo Ning wasn’t frightened, but the kitten beside him puffed up, threateningly producing a growl in its throat, annoyed by the suddenly overwhelming scent of decay.
