With plenty of free time on the weekend, Luo Ning decided to cook. He made an effort to cook delicious meals, wanting to please Fu Xian.

He had heard that ghosts could absorb the flavor of food. Since he hadn’t had time to buy incense, candles, clothes, and paper houses, he figured he would start with cooking. Surely even a ghost couldn’t resist delicious food, right? Luo Ning thought uncertainly.

Delicate fish, glistening red braised pork, and sweet pastries.

Luo Ning set one portion aside on the table.

A fragrant aroma filled the room, with black mist swirling around. Without realizing it, he took a breath and tasted the delicious, tender flavor of the meat.

He was originally uninterested in these things. Vengeful spirits had always fed on resentment, which was cold and decayed when consumed. Yet, food from the human world contained a warmth that was comforting to eat.

Before he knew it, he had absorbed all the invisible heat from the food.

Feeling satisfied, the coldness around the vengeful spirit dissipated a little. He hadn’t killed this person, so taking some things felt justified.

Luo Ning didn’t know if Fu Xian was still around or if he would appreciate it. After thinking for a moment, he went to grab a piece of pastry to taste.

At the first bite, he was pleasantly surprised. The pastry tasted like chewing wax. It was bland and dry, almost inedible. But Luo Ning was happy. He had heard that if a ghost ate food, it would lose its flavor.

This meant it was effective.

If Fu Xian was willing to eat his food, it proved that he did not hate him to the core and wouldn’t harm him immediately.

Luo Ning was a bit excited. He could save his life. The tragic death of Li Dapeng had left him with a shadow. To change Fu Xian’s fate, he not only needed to increase Fu Xian’s favorability to ensure his own safety but also needed to build a closer relationship, dispel Fu Xian’s resentment, and prevent him from becoming an enemy to the protagonist.

Luo Ning decided to continue his food-themed strategy, including arranging for candles.

…

Although Li Dapeng’s incident was chilling to hear, the busyness at work soon made his colleagues forget about it, and the atmosphere returned to a casual one.

Luo Ning got off work. When he entered the elevator, it was empty. Just as he felt a bit uneasy, a thin man entered. He wore a white shirt and glasses and looked quite handsome. He seemed to be a neighbor from the same floor.

The man greeted him kindly, “Just got off work?”

Luo Ning smiled back and replied. Although they were neighbors, their different work hours meant they rarely saw each other, and their relationship was not close.

When they reached their floor, the man politely handed Luo Ning two oranges. He said, “I bought these downstairs. They were cheap and pretty sweet.”

Luo Ning did not refuse and thanked him.

They had spoken only a few polite words. But later that evening while making dinner, Luo Ning heard meowing and scratching sounds at the door.

Luo Ning went outside to check and saw that it was a round, plump golden tabby kitten, looking very cute. It was meowing and tilting its head at him. It wasn’t shy at all and wagged its tail, trying to squeeze into his apartment.

Luo Ning was charmed by the kitten. He smiled and squatted down to pet its soft fur, which felt incredibly smooth. He vaguely remembered this kitten. It seemed to belong to his neighbor, as he had seen the neighbor carrying it out.

The kitten was so adorable that Luo Ning fed it some bananas. Realizing it was getting late, he picked it up to take it back, and thinking of the neighbor’s kindness, he also grabbed a small cake for him to try.

He knocked on the neighbor’s door, but there was no sound. After waiting for a while, there was still no response. He frowned, remembering that the neighbor should have come back. He knocked harder, and after a few minutes, there was only silence inside. Perhaps the neighbor had gone out again?

Luo Ning waited a bit longer. The kitten was unafraid of strangers, but it started to become anxious since it hadn’t seen its owner. It scratched at Luo Ning’s arms and attempted to get away to go outside.

Luo Ning chased after it. It was already eleven o’clock. He kept an ear out for sounds from the neighbor’s apartment but hadn’t heard any sounds of a door opening and closing. The kitten was meowing at the crack in the door. He moved closer, seemingly picking up some faint scent, very subtle and mixed with a hint of fishy smell.

Luo Ning couldn’t recall what that smell was. As long as it wasn’t a gas smell, it should be fine. The neighbor had not opened the door. Perhaps he was just in a deep sleep.

Since he had to work the next day, Luo Ning couldn’t wait any longer. He decided to take the kitten back to his place for the night and return it the next day.

The next day when he returned, he asked the property management office if the tenant next door had come back. The office said they hadn’t noticed anything.

That night when Luo Ning knocked again, there was no result. He felt puzzled. The kitten was so plump and clearly well-loved. How come the neighbor hadn’t come looking for it after being gone for so long?

He opened his door and stroked the kitten’s fur to calm it down. The kitten arched its back, watching the air warily, letting out anxious purrs.

Cats could see more than humans, and he guessed it was meowing at Fu Xian. After a struggle, he had finally managed to lull the kitten to sleep.

In the quiet night, a sudden knocking echoed at the door, rhythmic and almost hollow in the stillness.

Luo Ning rolled over, startled awake by the sound. He slipped on his slippers, intending to see who it was. It was late at night, and everyone was asleep. Surely the property management wouldn’t disturb anyone. Perhaps it was the neighbor?

As he walked to the door and stepped into the living room, his heartbeat suddenly quickened and a chill ran through him.

Luo Ning halted his steps. He listened to the knocking, which grew increasingly irritating. He didn’t move forward.

A faint, almost invisible wisp of black mist began to gather.

The vengeful spirit detected a disgusting smell from outside and felt displeased.

The knocking sound at the door was growing louder and louder, accompanied by muffled sounds. Luo Ning thought that perhaps something really was happening next door. But out of instinctive caution, he decided to take a look through the peephole.

But a strand of black mist covered his eyes. The vengeful ghost was not so kind. He hadn’t intended to interfere but thought that since he had been living comfortably here and had eaten so much meat, he would still stop Luo Ning. He knew how cowardly and useless this person was and that seeing whatever filthy thing was outside might scare him to tears.

Although it was pitch black, in that short moment, Luo Ning caught a glimpse of what was outside. He stumbled back in shock.

It was indeed his neighbor outside, but no longer in a normal state. The entire face was bluish-black, with the eye sockets empty and without eyeballs, staring directly at the peephole. The neck was also twisted, with dark blood flowing down. The white shirt collar was drenched in patches of crimson, making him extremely terrifying.

Luo Ning had locked eyes with those two empty sockets, and it really startled him.
