According to the rules, cannon fodder always becomes the stepping stone for the protagonist.

While feeling sympathy for Fu Xian, Luo Ning couldn’t help but become worried and depressed.

From the original timeline, Fu Xian, who had been transformed into a vengeful ghost, was extremely ruthless and could not tolerate the slightest offense.

Especially towards those who had bullied him, Fu Xian would retaliate with cruel and bloody methods, making sure their souls were torn to pieces even after death.

Unfortunately, his current identity was one of those who had bullied Fu Xian.

The original owner of this body was a spoiled high school student who took pleasure in playing pranks. When he saw Fu Xian in a difficult position, he suddenly devised a brilliant plan.

He actually went to confess to Fu Xian, not out of genuine affection, but to appear charitable. He thought that if he got close to Fu Xian, whose world was shrouded in darkness, he should feel grateful and humbled like a dog.

He wanted to wait for Fu Xian to develop sincere feelings, only to later trample him into the mud, thinking it would be extremely fun. He even invited his friends to witness it so they could all laugh at Fu Xian together later.

But to his surprise, Fu Xian rejected his confession and regarded him warily and with disgust. The original owner felt humiliated. In a fit of anger, he had someone beat up Fu Xian after school.

Luo Ning felt exhausted. With the original owner’s hate-inducing behavior, if Fu Xian encountered him, he would undoubtedly not be spared.

The fact that he managed to escape from the school and was now standing here unharmed was likely due to the protagonist’s halo.

What puzzled him was that when they were at the school, none of them were attacked by the vengeful ghost boss. So, Fu Xian should not have been sealed by the jade pendant and was still stuck in the school, right?

Lost in thought, the bus swayed and finally arrived at the stop. Luo Ning jumped off and ran to the company, panting as he pressed the button for the eleventh floor. He waited in the elevator. It was probably getting late, and he was the only one inside.

After a soft click, the elevator light flashed red. Luo Ning thought he had arrived, but when he looked up, he saw he was still on the tenth floor—just a step away. He hadn’t thought much of it, assuming someone was about to enter.

But when the elevator doors opened a crack, outside was not the bright light he expected but eerie darkness, layers upon layers of dense blackness, feeling extremely gloomy and oppressive. Something seemed to be surging within the darkness, as if something was hidden there.

At this moment, the elevator door slammed shut, but a body pressed against it. With pupils completely absent, eyes covered with bloodshot veins, a pale face stared intently at Luo Ning, grinning with a sickly smile.

A skeletal finger reached through the crack of the door, attempting to force its way in.

Luo Ning’s heart skipped a beat. Without thinking, he kicked the body away and hurriedly pressed the button to close the elevator doors.

In the cramped space, it felt as if only his heartbeat remained. Luo Ning tiredly closed his eyes, tightly pressed his lips together, still feeling a hint of lingering fear.

However, after last night’s dream, his adaptability had improved, and he wasn’t so scared as to faint.

He calmed down his emotions. He quickly encountered another strange situation in such a short time. He wondered if he had been tainted by resentment or cursed. In any case, he didn’t want to see anything abnormal again.

But what he didn’t notice was that a wisp of black mist gathered behind him, flashing past the bright walls of the elevator, accompanied by a barely audible laugh, as if mocking him.

When the elevator opened again, this time on the correct floor. Luo Ning entered the company building just in time. He rushed to his workstation, his eyes still somewhat dazed. He popped a piece of candy in his mouth, trying to force himself to forget what had just happened.

The workload in the morning was relatively light, so Luo Ning kept himself busy, managing the accumulated tasks efficiently.

Colleagues occasionally chatted around him, and soon it was noon. Many people were too lazy to move and ordered takeout. Luo Ning did the same. He didn’t dare go downstairs, so he settled for a quick lunch.

He wanted to take a nap at his desk when a man in a suit walked over. He was tall and muscular. He was Luo Ning’s boss, Li Dapeng, who had graduated from the same high school as Luo Ning. Li Dapeng had always performed poorly in academics and ended up at a technical college. He relied on family connections at the company to always act arrogantly and domineeringly.

Li Dapeng wore an uneasy and nervous expression, staring closely at Luo Ning with a strange look in his eyes. He leaned in and asked quietly, “Hey, did you really go back to the old school?”

Luo Ning responded with a casual “yes.”

Li Dapeng narrowed his eyes in suspicion. It shouldn’t have been the case. How could nothing have happened?

Li Dapeng remembered that experience clearly, including all the details about that disgusting little bastard. Li Dapeng felt a sense of injustice. Why should that piece of trash, who deserved to stay in a garbage dump, get such good grades?

Resentment and madness surged within Li Dapeng, and he had incited his classmates to bully that loser. Whenever he saw that loser on the ground like a lump of mud, he felt intense satisfaction.

One night, he tricked that loser into going to the rooftop and impulsively pushed him off.

At that moment, his vision was filled with blood. Li Dapeng was scared, but he refused to go to jail. Why should he go to prison for a worthless bastard?

So he calmed himself down and acted as if nothing had happened. The building was old and lacked security cameras. He lied and claimed he knew nothing.

Some teachers at the school also disliked Fu Xian. To prevent the scandal and save face, they shirked responsibility, saying that the student had always been strange and disrespectful to teachers and unkind to classmates and that he might have jumped due to his low self-esteem.

The incident was buried, and Li Dapeng thought everything was fine. But then another student had an accident. He was already feeling guilty, and the image of blood haunted him every night. Sensing something was off, he used illness as an excuse to take leave.

Eventually, strange things really did happen one after another at the school. Li Dapeng felt it was Fu Xian returning to exact revenge. He was both scared and filled with hate. He was fully aware that it was he who had harmed Fu Xian, so he didn’t dare return to the school to face the consequences.

Peace only returned after the campus relocation.

Li Dapeng remained vigilant, constantly gathering news about the old school, never daring to go near the area even for a fraction of a second.

He cautiously kept a low profile and had been doing well in recent years. Just a couple of days ago, he heard that Luo Ning was going back to the old school. He noted it but didn’t stop Luo Ning from going to his death. His mind had long twisted.

He even felt a sense of schadenfreude about Luo Ning’s fate. Logically speaking, Luo Ning shouldn’t be here, but today he unexpectedly appeared—something was off.

He pondered and asked cautiously, “I remember there were some bad rumors about the old school. Are you really going? You’re not joking, are you? Have you really seen something dirty?”

Luo Ning was feeling impatient and annoyed and stepped away from Li Dapeng. Knowing the background of this world, he recognized that Li Dapeng was a criminal who had escaped the net and was also one of Fu Xian’s first targets for revenge.

If there were any current evidence, he would certainly report him to the authorities.

Luo Ning pretended to be indifferent and replied, “It’s nothing, really. I just took a quick look around and came back out.”

“Team Leader Li, you seem quite curious. Why don’t you give it a try?”

“It’s been so long, and that school brings back many memories. You must miss it a lot, right?”

Li Dapeng shivered, his eyes darting around in panic. It felt like he had stepped on a forbidden point. A wave of guilt and fear surged within him. For some reason, he felt cold on his back as goosebumps rose on his skin.

He shot a fierce glare at Luo Ning, ending the conversation angrily. All that nonsense! There was no way he would go there. What a bad luck!

Li Dapeng spat, feeling dissatisfied that Luo Ning had scared him. He decided to sabotage him later.

A wisp of black mist followed Li Dapeng, the crimson flashing briefly. A chilling, eerie voice sighed, “Finally found…”

Li Dapeng felt an eerie sensation creeping over him. He wrapped his clothes tighter, regretting ever asking.

As the afternoon dragged on, colleagues began to pack up to leave. Luo Ning quickly followed his coworkers down the elevator. The crowd of people leaving work made him feel safe.

He had no ingredients left in his fridge, so he bought a large bag of groceries. Not wanting to cook when he got home, he decided to grab a bite out.

Amidst the noise and bustling, everything seemed so normal, peaceful, and calm. No one could see the inexplicable things lurking beneath.

Having filled his stomach, Luo Ning felt warm all over. The unpleasantness of the morning faded away. He relaxed and carried his things back to his small rented apartment.

Since it was still early and the place was a bit messy, he decided to clean up.

“Ning Ning, how are you doing?” The system, which was also afraid of ghosts yet had to carry out missions in this world, logged in. It was even more timid than Luo Ning. At the mention of anything supernatural, it would hide in the space and watch TV and sleep or eat potato chips. It had only just popped its head out.

The system also desperately didn’t want to leave Luo Ning alone here, but just imagining those horrific scenes made its data nearly break apart.

Luo Ning didn’t blame it for lacking loyalty. He lay down on the bed, preparing to catch up on sleep. “Next time, I definitely won’t take on a mission in this kind of world again.”

The system nodded. “Don’t worry, Ning Ning. The chances of encountering supernatural words are relatively low.”

“Just focus on completing the mission quickly, and you can leave early.”

“Otherwise, you’ll be stuck here for a lifetime.”

Luo Ning furrowed his brow. “I want to, but this mission is too difficult.”

His current identity was one that had offended Fu Xian. It was already kind of Fu Xian not to kill him. This world was filled with danger, and as cannon fodder, he probably wouldn’t even get a chance to get close to Fu Xian.

Luo Ning flipped over in frustration. The system felt guilty, drooping its head and shrinking into a ball. Its permissions were too limited, making it unable to interfere too much in the mission process. It also had no golden finger to use.

Luo Ning gently patted the system’s transparent little head. Things would work out when the time comes. If he couldn’t figure something out right now, there was no use in worrying so much.

He closed his eyes, intending to rest. Just before he drifted off, he felt a sense of unease, fearing a nightmare might return. But this time, he had just seen that sticky red blood, which quickly vanished. He slept well and woke up refreshed in the morning. He used the elevator to go to the company floor, and nothing happened. A smile finally appeared on Luo Ning’s face.
